@Nando28 yeah I got one from my regional admissions rep. I assumed they were just generic, but I’m not really sure… have you received any?
I’ve not received anything from Yale. (@Nando28 @misterdjl)
Alas! I was rejected from all five Ivies I applied to; yet thankfully accepted to Duke, Northwestern, CMU, UNC-CH etc. Very tough decision, but almost thankful the ivies didn’t make it harder. Huge congratulations to all!
@wisako - they do not. There is no chance that Yale will have a whole class of STEM majors. While those that are into STEM may think that it is the area to be, there are plenty of people who love languages, English, political science (which is actually the most popular major at Yale), etc. Also, remember, you do not have to major in a STEM area to apply to Medical School. There are many English, Psychology, Economics majors that end up applying to med school. Yale is a Liberal Arts School. It has a wide range of students. Look at the numbers of students in the actual majors and you will see the distribution.
Again, my daughter is just a few weeks away from the end of her sophomore year and she listed Classics Major on her application. She has not taken one Classics class while there. She is now wavering between being a German Major (which she never took German in high school) or Literature. She wants to go to Law School.
Yale is actively trying to improve and recruit for its Computer Science and Engineering Schools since that is not what it is known for. However, putting that on your application will not make it any more likely that you will get in. Yale wants well rounded students which includes STEM students who may want to work on the Yale Daily News, sing in one of the singing groups or work in the theater. Even an engineer needs to be a good citizen of the world and be well rounded. If a student wants a more pure STEM experience, they should apply to a school like MIT.
I hope this allays your concerns.
Congratulations to all that were accepted!!! Welcome to Yale. I’m an old alum (Class of 82) and my D is there now (Class of 18). Now you have a difficult decision ahead of you!! If still uncertain, please try to attend Bull Dog Days. Going to the school after you are admitted is totally different from going while applying. Now you need to look around and actually see if you can see yourself on the campus. What a wonderful choice to make. So proud of all of you!!
Boola Boola!!!
Paradoxically, for the purer STEM experience, pick Yale. For a STEM major, MIT requires more non-STEM courses than Yale, and also requires a non-STEM concentration in addition to the major.
At MIT, there are also a number of non-STEM majors. You could, for example, major in a foreign language or in one of its world class areas such as linguistics, economics, or philosophy.
Stupid question for everyone here… Yale asks for information about your cars on the CSS Profile. Does anyone know how Yale’s knowledge about your family’s cars impact your EFC? My family got rid of 2 old cars and got a new car… any guesses as to whether or not it would move my family’s EFC up or down? Thanks in advance!
@misterdjl , you might get more accurate answers on the FA sub forum, but I don’t think it will move the needle much, if at all. Assets that are parking money (ha! see what I did there?) are one thing, since FA will figure that roughly 6% of assets are fair game to be used for school, but it is not unusual to need a reasonable car. If you had a fleet of new Mercedes and Porsches, that might be a different thing. Personally, I wouldn’t worry about it.
Thank you @IxnayBob !
Just heard of this model un summer camp at Yale, but i’m not sure if a camp like this is really worth going to or will help me get in. Anyone else heard of this/been to it in the past? It’s called YMUNI–not sure what it stands for haha.
I’m a sophomore and Yale has been my dream school as long as I can remember!
