Yale Class of 2020 applicants

OK, so going to distract us all then…

Majors…and GO!

My son wants History with a pre-law tract

@kuriosmind Thank you for the positive message! My friend from Yale is so excited for me and I’m so nervous to tell him bad news :frowning: but you’re right we’ll still go to great schools!

I got an interview with the chair of the alumni association for my region the day before the interviewer reports were due. I’m hoping this means that I’ve been considered until the very end.

“Admissions decisions for Early Action applicants will be released in the evening on Tuesday, December 15. Applicants may access their decisions by logging into the Yale Admissions Status Portal. An email will alert applicants when decisions are available via the portal.”

Hi all, I volunteered to help someone with his Yale app so I’m anxiously awaiting his news & hoping for the best. Want to wish you all the very best too. And regarding the interviewers knowing your results this early…I can’t speak for Yale but my husband and son interview for another Ivy and they are told 3 days after the applicants.

Anyone else planning to major in Psychology?

Not really sure, I just know my interviewer was also REALLY close with yale. Like involved in the admissions office for a good bit. Maybe he found out before?

But irrespective, honestly guys as much as college and the “name brand” of yale seem like the most important things right now, it really isn’t. Trust me. I have two older siblings and they said it barely matters at all. What DOES matter is your hard work, work ethic, etc. Also, there’s still a ton of apps left.

Stay strong fam <3

@an1620 Yup! I’m planning on majoring in psychology, too

does the major affect the decision?

Is anyone else not gonna know their decision until way after 5 because they’re not at home?

To all of the applicants, good luck! You have all accomplished a great deal at such a young age. Best to all!

My DS received an interview too, I am waiting anxiously now…

By the way, I read an article from the Yale head of admissions a while back and he said…

The reason why there are so many deferrals is because the school doesn’t want to discourage high-achieving students from seeking out and applying to the best institutions in the regular decision round (even if their institution in particular may not be the best fit for them).

I think I can actually find this and link it to you guys…

“The [Yale admissions] committee faces a similarly challenging balancing act when deciding whether to deny or defer an application,” Quinlan said, adding that the University strives to use the early action process as an opportunity to provide candidates and schools with realistic feedback about who should apply early and the students’ chances in the regular round.

Quinlan said that many college counselors encourage the admissions office to deny admissions to more students so that the applicant can recalibrate his college list before the Jan. 1 regular decision deadline. But he said he worries that a rejection from Yale could signal to high-achieving students that they should not be applying to selective universities even when they are “the type of applicant whom we are trying to encourage.”

Although it was a difficult line to draw, Quinlan said that the University’s admissions office believes an early rejection rate of about 25 percent is appropriate for now.

The admissions offices of all other schools declined to comment, citing a policy of not speaking to student publications from other institutions.

Students who were accepted to early action programs have until May 1 to decide where they matriculate.

I got an interview. I’m interested in majoring in sociology or cognitive science or math and Economics. Clearly I’m not certain yet. xD

9 minutes!

Anyone else have their emails open and waiting for the “beep” sound of new mail?

Yes, anticipated major does affect admissions decisions. That’s why Harvard asks on their app how likely the student is on a scale of 1 to 5 to follow through with that choice of major. They don’t want to accept too many people with the same focus for each class.

I got an interview, but my interviewer was just as non-friendly as me and so it started out kind of awkward, ha. Also we were pretty much nothing alike, but that’s alright.
I’m currently undecided.

6 more minutes!!!
