Yale Class of 2020 applicants

Oh thnks @kuriosmind . Don’t give up

@16elir No I think they kept it and just merged it with this thread
@SoftballFan But I created the thread for RD/deferred applicants since this thread was for SCEA applicants. Anyways, I hope the accepted and rejected applicants don’t mind these notifications. Congratulations to your daughter for getting accepted (even though you already knew it was happening).
@ZACLE1234 Thanks! I’m an international applicant from an over-represented country so I’m not holding out hope for March 31st, but I’ll try to stay positive

@kurious. - Don’t sweat it! Based on previous posts and all the love & support folks in this thread were giving each other, I don’t think the accepted/rejected applicants mind receiving these notifications and following their deferred brothers/sisters’ journeys til the next target date…

@16elir , haha-no worries, ask me what you want lol. I got flat out rejected, but oh well haha, I did yales common app the day before it was due so that should have been expected. I was talking to someone on here a while ago, and I was telling him that I’m kind of glad that I didn’t make it in mainly because I was starting to not connect as well. Like I cant really see myself at yale-just not that type of person i guess. Plus, even if i made it-the chances of me attending is like .001 percent. I am not willing to spend all that money. But I am a little curious as to why I got rejected and not deferred. But what’s happened has happened.

By applying to yale, I have actually realized how passionate and dedicated I am for Georgia tech. I’m like in love with that place. So, I guess ill just have to wait till Jan 9…wish me luck!!

Congrats to all who have been accepted and I will truly miss everyone on this thread. You guys are better than my friends at school lol! But yeah, I guess ill stop visiting this thread so often and if any of u wanna talk, just pm me!!

Love u guys and good luck to everyone!!

Who knows maybe we will all meet again when we apply to Yale for grad school lol!! It’ll be like a reunion!

Some of you have been asking what you should do if you’ve been deferred and Yale remains your top choice. This advice is from the brown alumni college advising website page, but I will add that my son, who used the brown advising service, was told to send the email described below around beginning of February and then to send a very brief second email, just a few lines saying that the school remained his favorite and that he would attend if admitted, within the first few weeks of March when the committee begins looking at the deferrals again, after they’ve gone through the RD candidates.

"A deferral is an outcome that only takes place in the context of early application plans, and it means that the college is not prepared to either accept or deny you at this juncture, so they defer making a decision on your candidacy until they can consider you in the larger pool of regular decision applicants. Most often there isn’t a specific reason why a student is deferred, it is simply that the admission offices at selective colleges have far too many strong applicants for the number of spaces they have to offer.

Assuming you remain interested in them, it is vital that you a) keep your grades up and continue to be involved in the things you love to do, and b) follow up with a strong letter of continued interest to their admission office. Especially with Early Decision II plans now offered at many colleges, admission officers are aware that a good number of deferred students will apply ED II someplace else. So you need to let them know—in a brief but positive and heartfelt letter—that you are still interested and, if it’s the case, that they remain your first choice institution."

This was written regarding waitlisted applicants but also applies to deferrals:

“Send a brief letter to the admission office informing them of your continued interest.
If possible, address it to the admission officer who reads for your region (this can be found on college websites or by calling the admission office directly).
If you would attend if admitted, tell them that directly; if you’re not sure, find language that is strong and positive without making promises you may not be able to keep.”

This website has lots of good college process information:

@16elir , forgot to mention…i didn’t get the email either lol. I saw that every two posts your post would be like “still no email” , “didn’t get the email”, “where’s the email” hahahahaha. Made me laugh!

Wait, so it’s normal to write a follow-up email to the school that deferred you, even if that school is Yale (which probably receives hundreds of emails a day)?

If we were deferred, that means we at least got past the regional “round,” right?

@Xboxgamergirl sorry to hear that but love your positive attitude. Will be sending good vibes on the 9th. Thanks for all you’ve done to make this thread a positive environment!

@glasshours I believe I saw this addressed somewhere (by Gibby perhaps?), but anyway, there’s no guarantee that we made it to full committee or past the regional round, from my understanding. I believe you may be deferred at any time during the decisions process, and I don’t think we really have a way of distinguishing when it happened, unfortunately

Got deferred! Fingers crossed for regular, but I have no expectations. I’m just glad that the waiting game is over, and I’m really excited for what the future will bring, whether or not Yale is involved

@potatoprincess Aww me too. I thought you are such a competitive applicant! Good luck for regular!

I just feel like tonight was a bad dream and I would wake up tomorrow and realize it’s Dec. 14th and decisions still haven’t been released :frowning:

@kuriosmind aw, thanks! Good luck to you, too  I’m sure you’ll find another school to fall in love with soon enough

@kuriosmind Hey cheer up. I know just saying that probably doesn’t help much, but I hope you feel better later down the road. I know it’s rough. Up until a few hours before decisions were released, I kept having just the tiniest shred of hope that I would miraculously be accepted. But it wasn’t meant to be. You seem like an awesome candidate based on your posts and I know you will be a lovely addition to any school you eventually choose to attend.

Is it possible to somehow contact an admissions officer and find out why you were deferred/what you could improve upon? I’ve heard of other people doing this but I don’t know if it’s an accepted practice.

@Kasami Thank you  You seem like an amazing applicant as well! I also had a tiny sliver of hope that I would be accepted. I guess universe wants us to keep working hard in our senior year of high school. A deferral brings so much uncertainty (was I an “almost accept”? was I a “near reject”?) I just can’t wait 3 more months to know our future.

@theleenbean there are so many applicants that I don’t think they would be able to tell you or have the time to explain during their busiest months. I’ve just been talking to a few friends about my application and we speculated possible weaknesses and planned on how to improve them.

Why did yale defer so many people

@6alibah I think Yale’s deferral rate is between Harvard’s and Stanford’s extremes on either end of the spectrum. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/yale-university/965593-yale-deferred-scea-vs-yale-regular-decision.html
It’s been 5 years so I don’t know if the first reply’s theory is still true, but it’s worth taking a look.

What is the acceptance rate for deferred Yale applicants?
