Yale Class of 2020 applicants

this is some drama

@Multiverse7 Haha poor Dartmouth: “a voice in the wilderness cries”

We need a school with motto / logo that shows Diogenes walking around the marketplace holding a lamp in search of truth and light. That’ll the school for Ms. shivaya.

@shivaya is a guy :))

@yalebound2020 - Love the fact that at least it has caught the attention of a few folks :)). If the founders of Yale are watching, probably they are happy - dang, someone is at least giving some importance to the motto they passionately defined.

OK, this should give @shivaya plenty to ponder ;-): https://■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■/question/index?qid=20080114162915AA8Q8zc

If tl:dr, try this one: http://archives.yalealumnimagazine.com/issues/01_03/seal.html

@DeepBlue86 - Thanks for the links. I have seen them earlier. However, they did not satisfy the key question:
What the heck is meant by light and truth?

The writeups introduce 2 more words urim and thummim. They also talk about where they originate from. But, none of the articles define what is meant by the 2 words. Read the links.

There is discussion of Hebrew, Latin, Bible, etc. but no discussion on what the words “Light” and “Truth” actually MEAN and how are they connected/related in the phrase “Lux et Veritas”?

Isn’t that wierd? It is. If you are seriously interested in the deeper meaning of these words, PM me and I can share some of the findings from various philosophical and deep thinking articles.

I simply love Mathematics and Philopsohy. Sorry for boring everyone :wink:

I think this is where we part company, @shivaya . I believe you asked what the motto meant to Yale alumni. In one of the links I posted (which, by the way, I have read - I don’t forward links without reading them), it states, in part, “By choosing to translate Urim V’Thummim as Lux et Veritas, it seems—in contrast to the one-dimensional approach of Harvard—Yale insisted that its college offered the essentials of proper learning: the “light” of a liberal education and the “truth” of an old New England religious tradition.” That is what the words in the motto mean to the Yale community in that context. In practice, the motto has very little to do with the “light” and “truth” students seek at Yale and other universities.

From the tone of your other comments, though, it sounds like you’re trying to establish whether Yale would be the best place for you to continue your study of “light” and “truth” as you see them. If that’s the case, I think that Yale’s probably no better or worse a place than a number of others for you to do that.

@DeepBlue86 - I have no interest in comparing with Harvard. I already know which would be the best place for me to go and the priorities are already set - sorry can’t disclose it here.

I am in agreement that Yale is as good as any other place is - bcoz the alum has had exactly similar answers.

Thanks for reading the blabber - at least the thread is alive with 122 pages of posting :))

@shivaya - please announce where you are accepting to?

@yalebound2020 - sure will - at the appropriate moment :wink:

@shivaya - ASAP? I have added a new category to my pros / cons to accept a school

@yalebound2020 - I have identified 16 “areas” graded on a 10 point scale for each of my accepted schools. The highest score WINS me! :smiley:

@shivaya @yalebound2020
I think I speak on behalf of most other users here, but can you two both please take your passive aggressive banter to the pms please? I don’t mean to be rude at all, but it is kind of a disturbance for those of us looking at this thread for updates and information. Thanks

@filbierto I think I love you

@filbierto
=))

@shivaya What areas are you using?

@hellobeautii - I made a list of topics that are utmost important to me like “major(s) offered, cost, etc.” and graded them on a 10 point scale. Also did with 3 different scales with different weighted metrics, to make sure the result is consistent.

Just my way of making sure I go to a place where I will love to do what I love to do - i.e. Mathematics.

Wondering if anyone had applied for a Mathematics major and has got a LL?

@shivaya - did you apply to MIT?
