Yale Class of 2028 Official Thread

I have a more specific question. I got deferred early but I would say I have lower stats, 3.85 uw 4.6 w/TO but 15 AP/IB. But I think my extracurriculars and essays were good. Since I was deferred were my stats satisfactory enough to not get me rejected but not strong enough to get me in regular?

I would suggest Yorkside good food and affordable. There are many affordable hotels in Milford which is the next town over.

I wouldn’t say that. I would think that it is more about standing out as a deferred applicant, and grades won’t help you do that. But if you were deferred that means your grades were enough to get you passed some “bar”.

Basic stats are pretty much never going to be enough to get anyone into Yale in any round. I also note they evaluate all that contextually, so just telling us the raw numbers is not enough to know what they would think.

Otherwise, what Yale has suggested recently is they now do an initial screen, and one of the reasons you can fail to pass the initial screen is lack of the academic qualifications they are looking for. I don’t think they have explicitly said this, but it strikes many of us as a very good bet that if you are deferred instead of rejected, you must have passed the initial screen.

OK, then apparently once you are past the initial screen, basic stats like, say, your test score are not really discussed again. But the committee might dig into your transcript to see what sort of story it tells.

Even so, I suspect it is close to impossible for your transcript alone to get you admitted SCEA. In fact, knowing a bit about the transcript of one of the kids from our HS who was deferred, if that didn’t do it, I don’t know what would (this is the kid who won the Morehead-Cain at UNC).

On the other hand, I suspect a transcript with a story the committee didn’t love after a deeper dive, maybe in combination with some other things, could get you rejected SCEA even if you got past the initial screen.

OK, so I don’t think we really know anything about what they thought about your transcript beyond the fact it did not get you rejected either at the initial screen nor when the SCEA committee looked at your case. But since I think it is likely nearly impossible for a transcript alone to get you admitted, that doesn’t mean they saw it as a marginal transcript in context. It could be strong but, as usual, not nearly enough on its own.

Those were the two examples they discussed, but I didn’t read that to suggest there were never cases in between. But for sure this is now a question of interpretation.

did you click the link itself, or the verification form button?

This happened with me too, when I directly clicked on that verification form I also got “not Found”. But when I created that discord and clicked on form link from discord I get as above account mentioned

create the discord account first, and once u are logged in, click the form from discord.

Thank you for your answer? Do you know what other things they filter out in the initial screen or is it just stats?

ah. my existing discord account is connected to a lot of my online presence and i don’t want to cross the two, even for a trial

just make a random one lol

Nice to see another vote for Yorkside - we will definitely dine there if she is accepted. Thank you!

So Episode 30 of the Podcast, from January 2023, is where they “announce” the new Initial Review process. Again to summarize my own takeaways:

The basic question is a yes/no question, whether the Senior AO doing the review thinks the application will be competitive or not.

“Most” of the review involves application of six criteria the Podcast had previously identified as necessary but not sufficient to be competitive: (1) strong command of English; (2) strong and consistent academic record; (3) challenged yourself academically in context; (4) academic and personal integrity; (5) academic interests that align with Yale’s liberal arts approach; (6) maturity and interpersonal skills needed to live on a diverse college campus.

The tricky bit is they also said:

So if an initial reviewer looks at a file and sees that it doesn’t meet these criteria or that it’s otherwise pretty clear that among the 50,000 applicants, this file is not going to be one that’s going to be considered by the committee, the reviewer can go ahead and indicate that the file doesn’t need a full review by the area admissions officer.

So apparently the initial reviewer can also screen out applicants for reasons that do not fit neatly into one of those six categories, but they are not very specific about what that means.

Anyway, I think insufficient stats is one thing that could get you screened out (probably under the heading of an insufficiently strong and consistent academic record). But it is definitely not the only thing, and in fact I suspect from other things they have said recently that a large part of the point is to more quickly screen out people who might have superficially good numbers but are not really a good academic fit for Yale once you look below the surface level.

Yorkside is a family owned business. They were very welcoming and so nice to my kid during his time at Yale. I wish your daughter well and know she will land at an amazing place.

Another neat place to at least stick your head into is Mory’s, which is pretty much next to Yorkside. While it is a “private club”, I don’t think they check for membership at the bar downstairs. The place is steeped in tradition, and if your kid gets in, the one time dues is only $15. About Us - MorysAssociation

Another neat place is Louis’ Lunch, the inventor of the hamburger as per the Library of Congress. https://louislunch.com/

Love Louis’ Lunch! I also like Mamoun’s

I’ll third Louis’ Lunch. Very authentic student experience, and blissfully restricted in terms of options (you’ll see what I mean if you check out that link).

I’m so glad that they were nice to your kid and thank you for your positive thoughts for mine.

I really appreciate the suggestions and I’m beginning to think my daughter will have lots of fun dining options if accepted!

All these restaurant recommendations have me wanting an acceptance even more now! Would justify a trip to go eat there! :joy:
