Hello. Cutting the ribbon for this thread. My child applied SCEA but got deferred to RD. So still hopeful. Good luck everyone!

My S24 is also chilling in Club Deferral.

This is really just curiosity on my part, but I am wondering–is anyone applying ED 2 elsewhere while applying RD to Yale? Including deferrals.

S24 considered it but ultimately decided against. Partly that was to keep Yale as an option, and partly he was beginning to wonder whether he really should be committing before having all his live options in front of him (which I personally think is a wise thing to be concerned about).

Not my current HS senior, but my now College sophomore did ED 2 after being denied by their first choice, an Ivy. ED2 ( school had a 16% admissions rate in 2022) made a lot of sense then because we were still in the aftermath of COVID-19 and the uncertainty of college admission, testing, etc. We still now believe it was the best move. We have no regrets, and honestly, we can say the ED2 school is a much better fit than the Ivy for my College sophomore. My now HS senior knew from the get-go that they did not want to do ED or ED 2. Yale is still the first choice, even after deferral.

That makes a lot of sense, and I was actually fine with S24’s original ED 2 plan because I agreed that particular college really nailed what he was looking for when we visited. But that very question has been constantly evolving for him.

Frankly, he is not applying to a college I could not see him loving. I just want HIM to feel good about it when he is enrolling.

S24 applied RD and just noticed that the last few words of the short responses have been cut off in the PDF document he downloaded from CommonApp. He says that he cut and paste the entire response from Google Docs into the Common App so not sure why it is cut off. Is this something worth informing the Yale Admissions office ?

I would start by suggesting your S24 talk to his HS counselor, as they might know if this is a common glitch with the PDF or indicative of a possible problem with the application itself.

Deferral here too, no ED2 plans, other top choices don’t offer that option so was an easier call in this stressful process.

Harder call was deciding on the SCEA in the first place when other top options had a little ED boost.

They decided they really wanted to weigh options in the end and didn’t want anything binding. I see value as you really hone in even more as you move through process even when you feel set in the beginning.

Hi, I don’t know for sure. But when my kid applied, he always checked the .pdf file before submitting and assumed that’s what admissions will read. When it’s cut and past from an editing software, it is possible that special characters are introduced. See what happens if you cut and paste into a text file or into WORD. (I could be wrong, but I don’t want anything go wrong with your submission.)

@NiceUnparticularMan @isitmayyet Uggh, so S24 now tells me that the word cut off in the pdf is because of his error - he focused on getting the responses within 35 words BUT it also needs to be under 200 characters. So now, 2 of his responses are missing the last word on one and 2 words on the other !!!
Really not sure what to do - e-mail the admissions team, update on the portal (they specifically mention “substantial” updates only) or do nothing

Well, that is no fun. I do not think this is a truly critical issue, but if your S24 wanted to address it in an update, I would consider that OK. I know they said not to do updates for typos, but this is a little more substantive than that. Not saying he has to, either, just that I would personally consider it allowable if he wanted.

I feel same, could go either way on this. I’m sure it happens often enough and it will be clear what happened. They are pretty clear no one thing will be make or break and I don’t think this will be in any way.

My kid had to send a portal update for a couple classes that he found out after submission from his high school should have been categorized advanced/college-level. I seem to recall it was uneventful, just a generic auto-reply back they’ll take this into consideration when they review. I would expect the same auto-response if you do send something.

@NiceUnparticularMan @isitmayyet thanks for your feedback, I am still on the fence and he does not think it is worth sending an update because the basic message in the response comes through. Will let him decide

I’m curious if anyone from RD or SCEA has gotten an interview request from Yale yet. My child was deferred from SCEA, and I am not even sure if deferred applicants would get an interview during RD at Yale.

No and also wondered same, but thinking it’s unlikely. This is my oldest so have no real experience other than my best guess based on regular decision application amounts and them already determining they didn’t need more information during SCEA.

I wish they would though, my gut tells me his weakness is fit, and wish he had an opportunity beyond loci to address that further.

No interview SCEA, nothing so far RD, and I choose to interpret that to mean fit is fine, it is just other stuff they are not sure about yet.

This is purely a one-off anecdote, but the one successful SCEA applicant from our feederish HS that I know about was a legacy with amazing ECs.

If you are deferred from SCEA, your case has already been considered by the committee, and since in most cases, the interviews do not affect or change anything, they may prefer to focus (interview efforts) on the RD applicants. Being deferred by Yale is a big achievement. It may lead be better things! Who knows? I wish you all the best with all your applications.
Just my $0.02.

My RD just received an invitation for an interview scheduled for next week.

Where did you see the request? In the portal, an email, was it from the interviewer or did it say Yale?
