I heard from my regional rep (southeast) that the adcom was overwhelmed with applications and were forced to defer many prospective students that might have otherwise been admitted. He also said that they had problems with their computers, where they didnt work for ten days straight, affecting their ability to communicate and again, forcing them to defer many people. Also, the head alum guy for my area said almost no one got in, couldnt think of anyone that had been accepted from the southeast Florida region. Just thought you should know, and was also wondering if you heard anything similar.

Interesting.

I’m from the mid-eastern coast of FL and I was admitted. Also, looking at the map of admitted students, there were about 7-9 students admitted from the southeastern part of FL. Don’t know what that signifies for you, but just to let you know…

Ok, this is something that may get up the hopes of deferres unnecisarily. It would be great if this could be confirmed or denied. A couple of points:

1.) Yale is one of the world’s premier univiersities. If they had a serious problem, then they would have fixed it or hired people to help them overtime. Perhaps they would have postponed results (at least to the 16th like they said they would). They would not change 1000’s of people’s lives if it was in their power, and it most likely was.

2.) Think about acceptance/rejection rates. They nearly parallel last year’s. If they had had a problem, then the deferral rate would have risen out of caution. We can assume that things went the same because the rates were SO similar.

3.) We only have one story from a deferred applicant who may have been let down easily. While their sincerity is not in question, we have heard nothing serious from anywhere else.

I know how sensitive people deal with news about admissions but I think you are too quick to deem what I have heard from the head of the alumnae interviewers to be false or exaggerated.

Some of the stuff that the head said was contradicted by what Nickleby stated. The head of alumni interviewers said that “almost no one got in”, but yet the rate of admitted/deferred/rejected stayed almost exactly the same? And he couldn’t think of anyone who was accepted from SE FL, but the map clearly indicates there were about 7 from the Miami region accepted and 2 slightly north of Miami.

Perhaps if you talk to him about those inconsistencies, he could clarify the issue.

All i can say is that if i didnt think what he had to say was significant, i wouldnt have posted it.

If you have access to speaking with him, which you seem to have, perhaps you could ask him to clarify.

I have a bit too much time on my hands, so here are the Florida admission numbers based on the little red dots representing admitted students found on the “Welcome to Yale” map.

There appear to be a total of 17 admitted students from FLorida – 7 from Miami/Dade County, 2 from Cape Coral, 1 from Tampa, 1 from Sarasota, 1 from Port St. Lucie, 1 from Palm Bay, 3 from Orlando, and 1 from Tallahassee. There actually may be a few more admitted students because it’s hard to count the dots when they’re close together.

According to a FAQ on the website, 146 students from Florida applied to Yale EA. This produces an admit rate of 17/146 = 11.6%, an admit rate slightly lower than the 16% overall average, but not too far off to indicate admission problems of scandalous proportions. (An additional 6 admitted students would have put Florida even with the overall admit rate.) I also guess is that states along the populated Northeast corridor (New York, Massachusetts, DC area) had slightly higher admit rates than average, which would also explain why other states may have slightly lower than average admit rates.

In summary, Florida’s EA admission numbers appear to be consistent with the rest of the country. They do not appear to indicate severe EA admission problems in Florida.

I think you’ve settled that question!

can you give a link to that map? or if it only if for admitted students, can you tell me that stats for CT applicants? thanks!

it’s only for admitted students. If you tell me ur zip, I can tell u how many were admitted from ur area.

private message on the way…thanks :)
