Yale Essay

Okay…
I am worried. I wasn’t worried until I read several posts on this forum that if admissions officers see a really strong essay, they might think you haven’t written it.

So…
One of my essays is unique - I am 99% sure. It is shocking political satire/metaphor, which is really hard to write correctly and took me quite some time. I have received just technical help with it - no ideas, sentence changes, whatsoever. I would give it to people to read and ask for their opinion/reaction, but nothing else. Some of them would underline a word or two and that was it. Entirely written by me. However, it is really close to being too good to be written by a student my age (elevated language, extended metaphor, allusions, all it took). I have a very deep interest in politics, which is conveyed through my co-curricular activities, but I am still not sure whether the adcoms will believe that the essay is all mine, when it actually is.

So my question (may sound really dumb) is how do I prove/demonstrate that the essay is a product of mine?

You can’t. But it should fit with the rest of your application. If it was written by you then just submit it. Remember, they have access to your writing section of the SAT

I think i’m pretty good at writing/editing (editor of school mag and all) so PM to me and i’ll tell you what I think. I’m sure nothing is “close to being too good”.

do u want my opinion? i consider myself a good writer so i think i’d be able to tell u if it seems like a teen wrote it or not

AKA private message to us if you want us to read it! (:

Which is all the more reason to worry. Writing for the SAT/ACT and writing a college essay are in no way similar. For one, you aren’t constrained with what you can right about; the possibilities are limitless. Secondly, you aren’t limited in time either. You can edit and revise your college essay as many times as you want until you reach your idea of perfection.

So although one’s writing SCORE may not be that great, it shouldn’t be a highly-regarded indicator of overall writing ability.

i like to think im a talented writer as well…
sounds intriguing! may i read it?

Thank you guys for being so responsive and helpful. :)

I talked the essay over with my counselor and English teacher again and in the end decided to leave it as it is.

My SAT essay score won’t be a problem…I saw someone mentioning that. It’s 11, so it’s not like I have a 7 and then a really good college essay that makes things seem even more suspicious.

Submitting everything tomorrow (my tomorrow is in 30 minutes) and then keeping all my torso extensions crossed. :D

Ahhhh…can’t wait until December 15…and I have a whole Oxbridge interview to go through a week before that date.

Good luck to all of you! :)

Sounds like you won’t have a problem.
