Yale is Imploding over a Halloween Email

Whatever you are trying to change the subject to, boolah, it appears to be some irrelevant tangent. Your tasteless comment about the east coast was just that. Regardless of the geographical distribution of Jews in this country (here, let me help you http://ajpp.brandeis.edu/) , that crack was in bad taste. Honestly, most anyone with a kernel of decency (not just those on the “easter seaboard”, as your perhaps freudian typo indicates) would, or should, have a conniption. ANd if you find any costume depicting Anne Franke in Stilettos, thigh highs and a thong, you be sure to prove that it exists. Thats disgusting, and incredibly offensive.

And FWIW, the link CF posted was to an old article that mentioned someone claiming on their currently non-existent blog that they dressed up as Ann Frank. In 2009, IIRC. Bad taste then, and now.

Good post, warbrain. And while there may be more recognition of Chanukah, its unlikely many of other faiths have much understanding of the holiday.

So, you are “nearly” wrong…

There is no wave of skimpy Anne Frank costumes sweeping the nation. And really, is there a wave of blackface or sombrero or Native American costumes in college campuses? I highly doubt it. You can’t control everybody, there are always going to be a few idiots in every crowd. You can choose to let their presence dominate and define your identity and your life, or roll your eyes, figure that they are the losers and move on to focus on your own agenda.

There are no skimpy Anne Frank costumes that can be found as far as I can tell. The costume that came up was someone in a tweed jacket with a yellow “jude” star from WWII and a book. Not too skimpy. But definitely in questionable taste.

@jym626 only because you are pestering me about it, here you go, *** don’t view, unless you want see something entirely inappropriate see:https://www.reddit.com/r/■■■/comments/lsja3/anne_skank_sexy_anne_frank_halloween_costume_also/

So, I guess I’ll be expecting my apology when? And it took me all of 90 secs to find…

That web page is not available, but what does come up when one looks are multiple articles on the inappropriateness of trivializing and sexualizing of the Holocaust, - articles from 2011.

A sombrero costume was at issue in the Claremont case; two young women students put up a picture of themselves in a “Mexican” costume on Facebook, and a Claremont student objected:

And sombrero costumes apparently are widely available, so I have to assume people are buying them:

Pestered you about it? Thats funny. The link you put up to “prove your point” in post 1094 had some amazingly disgusting costumes in terrible taste ( you chose not to comment about the black face costumes? Too busy trying to be provocative, it seems), but the Anne Frank one was anything but “skimpy”, despite your effort to prove a point. Try learning to read. Reread my post, and you will see that what I said was not inaccurate. Time to move on. And time to try to recognize that sensitivity is a 2 way street. And not just on the “Easter seaboard”.

There were others, however in keeping with NSFW policy, I did not post them. And I’ll repeat don’t tell me when I should continue or not.

Again… try to read carefully. No one is telling you anything… not that it seems a request would be listened to anyway. But from this vantage point, my opinion, time to move on.

And “NSFW policy” seems to be in this case a euphemism for “there really aren’t other useful examples but better to try to spin it in a benevolent-sounding fashion”, especially since you seemed perfectly ok posting those incredibly distasteful photos (which include 4 photos with a total of 5 people in blackface, a member of the KKK and Hitler, amongst others such as a dead JFK, Twin tower victims, etc) in post #1094. Nice job!

Let’s talk about something more interesting. Next weekend is the Harvard-Yale game!

Sounds like these students are emulating the red army’s youth brigade’s public shaming techniques

So the students were for or against offensive costumes?

Or…we could all take a collective deep breath and read this (I think; do you agree?) really amazing letter from Nicholas Christakis. I wish I was this good at being an adult. http://silliman.yalecollege.yale.edu/news/idea-positive-intent

I think Prof. Christakis’s response was wonderful. Two thumbs up!

What a class act! Nice response.

So is it time to start the Mel Brooks movie marathon???

Nice job, NC and EC (except for an “oops” typo-- co- exist, not exits)
