It appears that the Amherst president declined to meet the demands of the student protesters:

^^ She showed some spine last year too when she refused to condemn free speech. At some point the college admin offices of all these schools must be asking themselves who the heck they accepted, as many students act like sheeple, not thinkers.
Well, she did and she didn’t. But the students “escalated” on at least the Lord Jeff mascot issue as promised, and boy, are they being unreasonable:
The nerve of these snowflakes?

Meanwhile, free speech in the form of satire is apparently alive and well at Amherst: http://amherstmuckrake.com/
“Not because they are a right-leaning publication alone, but that along with hearing from most Dartmouth alums I know that they’ve been known to heavily exaggerate and play up bad points while downplaying/omitting other aspects of the story”
“Most Dartmouth alums you know”? Given that you don’t have an affiliation with Dartmouth, I have a hard time believing you know any more Dartmouth alums than I do. I spent half of today with a coworker who is a Dartmouth alum, but I don’t pretend that gives me any special insight into Dartmouth. It’s really important not to pretend to know more about certain colleges than those who actually have connections themselves or through their children attending. I’ll rely on Consolation, whose son went there, or other posters who have connections there.
“3:20: Librarian canned for shushing students having loud, enthusiastic conversation about race. “I wasn’t trying to make a statement or anything… it’s just second nature,” said the racist librarian.”
Priceless
^ That is hysterical!
The whole thing made me lol but these were my highlights:
1:34: Amherst College republicans arrive, carrying casket containing free speech, and offer to deliver eulogy.
1:47: Sophomore Alan Keezer walks in to print out a reading, cannot leave so as not to appear racist.
2:32: Racism is explained to the lacrosse team.
3:42: Kid studying who isn’t on social media conveniently wears his black northface. He just goes with the flow as people start solemnly piling in next to him.
4:10: Prospective student wanders into Frost. Put off by large class size.
5:02: Lazy Junior Sam Fifer notes that this is the longest he’s ever spent in frost in one sitting.
6:32: Lax team finally understands racism, never has to think about it ever again.
6:43: Pizza makes all the difficulty of race dialogue melt away in a mixture of cheese and tomato.
6:47: Back room Val “Sit in” enters record 9th slice of pie.
That link was too funny - thank God we all still have our sense of humor. 1:34 was my favorite.
Can a Halloween costume be a form of satire? Is satire that is offensive (which a lot of it) serving a different purpose from simply offensive? These are not insubstantial questions.
What about speech / action meant to provoke - which is sometimes called art? What if someone decided to carry a mattress and dress up like Emma Sulkowicz (the Columbia mattress woman). Is that deliberate provocation and trivialization of rape? Is that social commentary? Is that drawing attention to Ms. Sulkowicz’ cause? Is that satire? Is that an art project?
“The Dartmouth Review have long been known for arguing in favor of right-leaning causes such as being against divestment of college investments in Apartheid era South Africa in the 1980’s”
So? How does that invalidate them? All it means is that they are conservative-leaning. It’s almost as though you can’t abide anything conservative leaning. I’m liberal, but geez, I can listen to other viewpoints without imploding.
Watched only about a minute but stopped – can you give us a synopsis, CCDD14?
A very, very creepy video of a (fictional) militant math class in which 3x3=gender equality.
@jum626, sorry, cannot summarize art.
No description, no explanation-- no watch
Edit to add: thanks, sue, for the summary.
Best line from the video was Penelope saying “stop assaulting me with your different opinions.”
Do not believe you. Curiosity will kill the cat.
Nope. That’s 7 minutes I can never get back. The first minute was a serious yawner so I stopped and asked. Not hearing any reason to waste another moment. Will pass. thanks.
Reminds me of threads people start with links to something but no with explanation. Is just not that important.
I ignored the reference to cis-gender in the Amherst demand letter, but after that video, I had to go look it up. I need to post on the thread “checklist for parents of incoming freshman” to teach your student about micro aggression, trigger warnings and now cis-gender.
lmao… completely spot on!
