Yale Parents thread

Kdog044, when I looked yesterday, I noticed that he did not get the “2 Day” shipping. Now I know why!

Just sent my son an ‘I forgot this’ package via Priority Mail…we’ll see how long it takes to get there!

Well 120 miles RT on I95 when one has a FT job…well anyway :)

Kdog
that would be fun–drive by, drop off stuff, catch coffee/lunch/dinner and then drive back
:D

We’ are 2 plane rides away so no go for a drop-in

We use the zone boxes… Love them!

I guess K1 has just gotten " lucky" with all of the books for 3 semesters now…
and I used the same info on the Yale website–for all of our shipping to the campus. Easy to find.
Maybe the postman likes K1 better :D

Wow, mimk, sounds like this has been an issue for a while. Good to know. I’m just practicing patience!

Yes, exactly. That, and the fact that there seem to be several recommended and conflicting “solutions,” including dual address and the form that students can fill out at the PO to use the street address of the Yale Post Office for receipt of their private carrier items, among others.

donnaleighg, I feel you. It’s not always an easy thing to find that kind of time in a busy schedule. My D is within driving distance too. I know that we are lucky they are close, even if we can’t always make it there to see them when we or they would like. I hope your D had a happy birthday regardless of her cookie delay! I’m sure it meant something to her that you tried to get them there on time.

Thanks Hooray. Besides, I think showing up to say happy birthday 5 days after we dropped her off might have set off some “clingy parents” alarms among her suite-mates! I’m going to send some more treats shortly, when I have some confidence they’ll arrive in a more timely manner. It is actually my abiding faith in the USPS that makes me surprised at the delay, and more willing to blame it on Yale than on USPS.

Donna…
Have you seen [Cookies, Desserts, Gifts - Cheryls](http://www.cheryls.com)
You can send all kinds of cookies in all kinds of shapes.
I sent my mother a bouquet with flowers, butterflies and bumble bees.

Another parent I know sends her DD these and they have been happy with them

Fog; cool idea- thanks! In the past I looked into one of the cupcake trucks that runs around there, but their minimum order was huge (and expensive)!

yes but the cupcake truck is good for a treat…they stop at streets around Yale. A friend of a friend owns this one and they are delicious.

And one more that parks at Yale Rep sometimes
http://www.food-driven.com/</a></p>

Yum cupcakes!

For K1’s grad party after the ceremony–we did a luncheon at the house and ordered a bunch of gourmet cupcakes…
Did dinner in the evening …

No one in our house minded that there were some cupcakes left in the fridge :D

The cupcake store looks great. I wish that they delivered :(

I know, the owner (she was on TV recently) just doesn’t have the staff yet to deliver, the cupcake truck came from so many people saying they wished she was closer to where they worked, etc. She delivered for a shower a friend had because the order was large.
One day I think she will find it profitable, I think many students would love it vs a cake…more choices and neater. : )

I’m not a Yale parent but I am from the area… and yes, Sugar cupcakes are amazing!! I have been a customer for many years. They won Food Networks Cupcake Wars a few years back. Maybe an order can be put together and a “friend” can pick the order up from the truck which is parked on different streets throughout the city during the week. I know they are parked outside of the medical school(Cedar St) a few days. George/College St intersection on others. And to be honest, its a quick ride over the Qbridge/easy to get to. We stop in all the time.

I bet if you call them, they will work something out… they will even place them in a flower bouquet box…it presents quite nicely! Carol and Brenda are wonderful! And always willing to make a birthday special.

Someone told me newhavenctmom, when I mentioned I loved “icebox cake” as a kid, a pudding/graham cracker concocton my Mom made for me, that Brenda made an “icebox cupcake” because she loved it too…that is next on my list to try. : )

Forgive me if someone has already pointed this out (I re-skimmed the thread and don’t think so) – but I notice that the Yale “Campus Mail” website has info that is quite different from what the 2016 parent site says, and from what has been suggested by some poster.

[Yale University Mail Service](http://www.yale.edu/campusmail/StudentMail.htm)

In particular, they say NOT to include “Yale University” in the address anywhere, and go on to say this:

“Mail and packages received with a street address (including those sent to your Master’s Office) must be looked up to determine the correct box number, then returned to Yale Station. This causes a delay of 24 to 48 hours in the receipt of your mail. To avoid this delay, use your box number on all mail. Do not use the words Yale University, a street address, room number or the college or the dorm name or address.” So I guess the days of things going to the Master’s office are gone.

As for private carriers, it does say “Use the street address of the Yale Post Office for receipt of your private carrier items. Both street addressed mail and PO Box addressed mail can now be delivered to your PO Box.”

We used the dual address method for two Amazon orders, neither of which my son has received.

Wanted to confirm that the method that Hooray and Kdog posted worked. Thanks to Hooray and Kdog!
Ordered from Amazon, 2 day shipping. Addressed to:

Student name c/o Friend’s name (D has not gotten a po box yet, so shipped it to friends)
206 Elm Street # 123456 (Friend’s po box; do not use words PO Box)
New Haven, CT 06511

Apparently, was delivered by UPS, not USPS. Arrived in 1 day. The package was signed for by someone (maybe a the post office?) D’s friend picked it up on 2nd or 3rd day, but not sure if it was picked up at 206 Elm or 143 Elm.

This is my impression based on Hooray’s and Kdog’s posts and from reading the post office and shipping info on Yale’s 2016 website:

Items get addressed to student 1 of 2 ways (the purpose of 2nd option is for 1 or 2 day shipments which don’t accept a PO Box):

student name
PO Box 123456 (6-digit box number)
New Haven, CT 06520 - 3456 (last 4 digits of box number)

or

With the street addressing function below:

Student name
206 Elm Street # 123456 [your student’s box # goes here, but don’t put the words “PO BOX” or even “Box” before the # sign]
New Haven, CT 06511

Additional forms can be filled out at the Yale Post Office at 206 Elm:

Street Addressing: Use the street address of the Yale Post Office for receipt of your private carrier items. Both street addressed mail and PO Box addressed mail can now be delivered to your PO Box.
Real Mail Notification Services: Receive an email or text message each day you receive new mail in your PO Box.
Signature on File: Provide us with your signature and have signature-required mail and packages accepted for you.

The way that it says to address mail on the Yale Shipping and Yale Post Office websites seems like it will work, if you are not concerned about the amount of time that a package will take to come thru USPS.

student name
PO Box 123456 (6-digit box number)
New Haven, CT 06520 - 3456 (last 4 digits of box number)

Now that it works, need to send birthday treats. Maybe she can just pick up her own cupcakes?

Ok so we normally use BDL and have to connect between New Haven and home.

How much of a hassle is JFK?LGA instead of BDL
In terms of time

I compared costs of tickets and ground transport last yr to find they were almost equal (adding ground time/airport flights/layovers/etc) and Price.

Right now however tickets may be cheaper out of the NY airports.
Thing is it is Thx so the holiday traffic is rough and that long bus seems l-o-n-g…

What have your students thought about it?

Edited to add… Is there any ground transport to Providence?

During my D’s years in New Haven(2005-09), she mostly flew out of LGA. Take the Metro-North train to Grand Central, walk outside the south entrance onto South Park Avenue, cross the street and take a bus to LGA. Or, if you are more adventuresome, take the train to 125th Street, go to the south side of the street and catch the M-60 bus to LaGuardia.

fog: I did the JFK, LGA, EWR thing mostly the first 2 years. Once I discovered BDL, I found the short shuttle ride up to and back down from Hartford (45 min) to be MUCH better than the 3-4 hr ride to NY/NJ via shuttle. I never did the Metro North b/c I was always packed heavily.

I think the Metro North train is about 90 minutes from New Haven to Grand Central.

fogfog: Not sure if Newark would work with your plans, but the Amtrak train is right there at the Newark airport. No need to go into the city and it goes straight to New Haven. It might cost a bit more but my son has found it the most hassle free of all options.
