The additional time to LGA is closer to one hour and I find the flights much cheaper. Using shuttle services you are probably saving $50 each way using LGA so you can decide if that is worth an extra hour or so of your time. If you use Metro North the savings are greater.

Way back when they had non-stop flights out of New Haven to O’Hare for the same price as using LGA enabling easy transfers elsewhere. It would be nice to see more flights besides Philadelphia out of Tweed.

We tried a Tweed flt back in May–theoretically had the flt left- K1 would have saved time and $…as it worked out the plane never left. We spent about $100 on a taxi to get K1 from Tweed to BDL and the airline put K1 on a different flt.
The Tweed people were supposed to give K1 a voucher for the transfer, they didn’t . USAir “could have” done the same thing (according to their customer service people online). In the end, USAir peeps in BDL had no sympathy as far as giving k1 reimbursement for the lack of service at Tweed/voucher.
So we won’t ever use Tweed again.

The airtrain link into newark could be useful too

Appreciate the thoughts re jfk, lga and ewr.

Once upon a time, we always used BDL (with CT Limo) as there was a direct flight on Frontier there from our local airport. It was great. Then Frontier pulled out of Hartford, leaving us in the lurch. Going to BDL now is more expensive and requires a plane change, extending the time. Now the cheapest direct flight from our airport is to LGA, so we had to make a switch. MetroNorth/NYAirport Shuttle is okay, but not great for time or when carrying luggage. For my S we now use either CT Limo or Go Shuttle from LGA–it’s still cheaper and quicker for us then going to BDL. He has not had a problem. JFK or Newark flights from our airport are much more expensive then LGA. Doing the math each trip, I always end up with the LGA/shuttle route.

JFK is fine. DS arrived at Yale this year via Hartford and is coming home for Thanksgiving via JFK. The upside of JFK (can’t speak for LGA) is that there are more flights to choose from so more competitive pricing, and there are more non-stop flights (at least to us). The downside is that it’s about 30-45 minutes further away and shuttles tend to make stops, so the shuttle tends to pick up about four hours before the flight. If you fly Jet Blue out of JFK, they have their own terminal and it’s easy. My daughter flew out of Tweed, Hartford and JFK, and we ended up going with JFK more because connecting flights caused so many problems. Part of it depends on where you are flying to and which airport has the most flights to your airport.

As far as I know, most college students at Yale do not need a car. But I notice that, unlike in some other larger cities, there is no car dealer in New Haven. It appears there is one in West Haven and another one in North Haven. I am wondering where students take their car to for service if they do have a car? Also, where do they park their car during winter season?

My freshman D says she and her suitmates are planning to go to Boston for The Game - yet they do not have tickets to the game, or any idea how they are going to get there, or where they will stay. Have any of you been through this already? How did your kid get to/from Boston? And does Yale have tickets to sell for the game, or do they have to buy them from stubhub or some other ticket place (or Harvard dirctly)? There is a rumor that their RC has a sister dorm at Harvard - any ideas about this? Thanks!

i don’t know how, but they will figure it out. tickets will be available, floor space at Harvard sister dorm for sleeping bags will be available, charter buses and greyhound and amtrak and space in friend’s cars will be available – it will all work out in the end. some yale orgs have official events at the game and organize transportation for members (Glee Club, for example.) The tix will be for seating in the Yale Student cheering section. Perhaps someone else can tell you about how much they’ll cost, or if they’re free. I doubt they’re expensive, 'cause I know what a cheapskate my daughter is, and she’s been to the Game all her undergrad years so far.

I did read (on the Yale Bulldogs Athletics page) that student tickets will be $20 and that the students will receive an announcement when they go on sale. Guest tickets are $35.

I was trying to reply to a private message from one of the nice, helpful parents on this thread when I got this message:

I have only posted a few times but I have had a private email exchange with a couple of people before-- this just started happening today. Anybody know what happened? I think I can receive private messages-- just can’t reply to them or send them. Weird!

Yalemom16, Not sure why the restriction, weird condition to send a PM, maybe your could just contact the admin address or if all else fails try to post 12 more times on other threads!

Re; the game, My two older kids are at Harvard and have always hosted kids from Yale who sleep on the floor etc. Last year my freshman D hosted her sister and farmed out her brother to sleep in one of her male friends Yale dorm. Yale opened up Common Rooms for Harvard Students to crash in, provided showers etc. Harvard does the same. Bring your own bedding!

The Universities provided buses they could get cheap or (free?) rides and there is always the train etc. Because Yale kids can leave for the week after the game many like to book tickets home from Boston after the game for the break. Harvard kids have to go back to school for 2 more days> They work it out and its fun. My husband and I have been going to the games, we always sit and root for the visiting team, tickets are cheaper! So last year we rooted for Harvard, this year Yale! Its our way of staying neutral!

Fogfog, My D takes the train from home (5 hours) and finds it really easy and not too expensive. Newark airport is easy to navigate to the train and then once in New Haven its a 5 minute Taxi ride. Think its about an hour or more depending on how long train stops in NYC.

I contacted the CC admin about it- they said they just changed the protocols to prevent spammers. Sorry that I couldn’t reply in a PM to you, HoorayHooray…thanks for your message.

I know this has been covered here already, but I am so ticked off at the system that Yale has in place for mail service (or lack thereof.) S is a junior, so you’d think I’d be used to this by now, but I really think things have gotten worse. I sent him a package (Priority Mail, flat rate box, so I had a tracking number) last week; I got an email saying it was delivered to P.O. early on Friday morning. I told S to pick up package; he went and got a book that was ordered weeks ago, but no package from me. I sent him the tracking number PLUS he got a slip from the P.O. today saying it was there. So he trekked back over today, waited 20 minutes in line and - guess what? They can’t find the package. They said they “have no idea where it is; try coming back tomorrow.” Do they really think that the students have all the time in the world to make daily trips to the post office and wait in line with no results? Most schools do not require that the students purchase a P.O. box in the first place; the fact that we do and get such crummy service is just not acceptable in my book.
S directed me to this article in YDN:
[Yale Station struggles to keep up | Yale Daily News](http://www.yaledailynews.com/news/2012/sep/14/high-volume-of-incoming-packages-sets-yale/)
This system is broken; they need to come up with something new.
Between this and the no meals for the week before classes started, I feel like I’m turning into a curmudgeon :)

^The New Haven post office by campus is awful, I actually don’t think Yale has any authority over it to make it better though. I have stopped sending stuff via US Mail to Yale- only send UPS to the residential college, works like a charm. Regular letters that aren’t time sensitive are fine for the post office, but other than that, Sender Beware!

Many pages back in this thread I commented that D1 sent me a nice Valentine’s Day card with a chocolate tucked into it. I received it a couple months later, opened, sans chocolate :(. Can’t say for sure it happened at Y Station but one more data point…

To add to the cookie and cupcake discussions…If you don’t need anything too fancy or expensive, try the ASA (Associated Student Agencies) Cakes. It is run by Yale students and they deliver to the residential colleges. I had a tray of cupcakes spelling out “Happy 21st Birthday…and my son’s name” sent to his suite last year. They were very accommodating to my special request and very reasonable in price. Here is their website:

“After a United States Postal Service spokesperson was informed of the backlog by the News on Wednesday…”

I don’t get this - they didn’t know there was a problem until the News contacted them? No one at Yale Station picked up the phone to ask for a little bit of help? That’s crazy.

Update on the Post Office: I saw a link on an earlier thread on this board to the person at Yale in charge of the mail service and sent a polite but firm complaint email to her about my dissatisfaction with this. I got an almost immediate reply, copying the postmaster at the Yale Station PO. A short time later, I got a follow up saying that they had located the package and will leave a message on my son’s voicemail to pick it up (and not to wait on the still long line). End of this story is that he did get his package. So I guess that’s what it takes; not really a good system.
I usually send packages via FedEx Ground or UPS to the Master’s Office; this time I figured it would be cheaper to use a flat rate box because it was a heavy one. Never again!

The people who work at the post office know exactly what is going on. I called last week to try to get them to dig a package out of the pile for my D since I knew (via delivery confirmation tracking) that it had been delivered days earlier. The woman I spoke with said she has worked at that post office for 23 years and that they have the same problem every year. The start of classes is like their holiday season, but without additional staffing. She said (and this was right before the article in the YDN came out) that she has asked for additional employees and overtime hours for her staff and that both were denied. My sense is that Yale is very well aware of the problem and it is far too easy for them to just blame it on the post office when in reality, they should be taking responsibility for the students mail as is common in most other schools.
