Any of you local parents know what’s happening with the power outage at Yale? My D texted me about half an hour ago that the power was out campus wide.

S just called–no one seems to know what’s going on. So much for Yale’s emergency communication system!!

Just posted on YDN:
At approximately 6:22 this evening, Yale lost power across campus. As of yet, power has yet to be restored. The outage appears to have only affected buildings powered by the Yale power plant.
The reason for the outage remains to be determined, but several fire trucks were seen outside the power plant shortly before seven.
Internet is down across campus. Libraries have been evacuated, but as of yet students have not received any instructions from the administration.
Update: 7:33 p.m.
Power has returned to parts of campus, including many residential colleges.

Thanks, Yaliesmom! I knew the power was out but as university internet and phones are out could not find any info. Guess I know where to go for news from now on. Of course my daughter is unreachable and has a dead cellphone.

Anticipating restoring power in the next hour according to a Yale alert message.

Same here (daughter with a dead cellphone!) I was surprised the Emergency Management website went down – seems like a glitch to me. At least all ended well and quickly!

YDN reporting that power has been restored, and that “According to police spokesperson outside the Yale Power Plant, a substation “blew a transformer,” causing power to go out across central campus.”

Usually we get the Yale alerts as well, but nothing here. S had not received any notification as of his last phone call.

No alerts for me either!

The Yale Alert system is for university employees, not students and family. Its purpose is to inform staff of events that may impact workers.

For those whose students have had fellowships or done on-campus research over the summer: Is there summer housing available on campus, or do most students sublet in New Haven? Is campus room/board ever part of the summer stipend/funding?

Thanks.

Our S did research for a professor last summer. He found that unless one is a counselor for one of the summer camps at Yale, no university housing is available. He did find a relatively inexpensive shared sublet in the East Rock neighborhood. There were many to choose from, as grad students often take the summer to do internships elsewhere. Grocery shopping was inconvenient, but shopping and cooking were good learning experiences.

CIEE83, according to the YDN the alert went out to faculty, staff AND students. However I have received alerts on my cellphone (as a parent) quite a few times over the last 7 years as well.

We didn’t get anything here…no cell alerts/nothing email
and we are normally clued in

Guess it all went smoothly :)

Has anyone’s child here received a named scholarship to Yale? Any idea what the criteria is to be selected for one of those?

@Hooray,
My son got a letter telling him part of his financial aid was from a scholarship named for a former president of Yale designated for a student interested in the classics. Can’t remember his name, but his tenure was during in the 1860s, I believe.

Since there’s no merit aid, I think those endowments go to a financial aid recipient who fits the criteria specified in the endowment. (And taking DS seemed to be enough for this one.)

Could the Yale parents here recommend some hotels of decent quality, good rate and are in safe neighborhoods? We are driving, so a little distance from the campus is no concern. Thank you!

We have stayed at many different hotels in the area and all are perfectly safe. Of course, as in any city, you should always follow proper precautions when walking around at night–but there is no reason to believe that New Haven is less ‘safe’ than anywhere else. Pricier places are The Study at Yale and the Omni, a little less pricier the Courtyard at Yale and the New Haven Hotel. All those are walking distance. Further out and needing a car are Premiere Suites (a Residence Inn type style) and LaQuinta (which is the lowest price). There are others outside of New Haven but only a 10-minute drive or do–just do some googling. Feel free to PM me if you want any specific details.

We stayed at the Springhill Suites in Milford which was nice. It is right off the freeway and about 15 min from Yale.

Hooray Hooray

All aid is need based.

When the kids (matriculating) complete a form re aid, and are deemed to have need, there are many things including having family graduating in certain classes back in the 30’s, certain disciplines of study etc etc

All that means is that it is the pot/tagged acct/ part of the endowment from which they drawn the funds.

It doesn’t affect admissions. There is no way to apply for it.

it is just kind of cool to know
