Yale Parents thread

Well, actually there is a way to apply for it, sort of–it’s that “Bio Questionnaire: Application Supplement” that is a step of the financial aid process. Those extra ‘named’ scholarships are based on the information reported on that. For example, someone could have a scholarship they want to go to a person participating in a particular extracurricular, etc.,–all of which is indicated on that form. It’s still need-based–the Yale Scholarship amount is just reduced by the amount of the named scholarship.

We stayed at the Hampton Inn and Suites on Saw Mill Rd in West Haven, and it was nice. I’ve also stayed at the Hampton Inn in Milford and it was fine. Not as nice as the one in West Haven, but not dangerous or anything. You won’t be there much, so either one would be fine and I’d pick the cheapest.

We often stay at the Hampton in Milford. 11 miles from the exit to Yale, right off the highway. Simple, fine, and very inexpensive ($90 or so); the ones in the city of NH are much more expensive.

Thanks to all who shared the hotel info as I requested. I’ll try these different options in the years to come! :)

We frequently stayed in the Hampton Inn in Milford, and found it fine. There are several other chains of about that type near the Milford exit. They do tend to bump up the prices during Yale events, such as graduation.

Thanks. The confusing thing was this description of a named scholarship: “This scholarship is a special honor that reflects the University’s esteem for your past and present achievements, as well as your potential as a member of the Yale community.”

CONGRATS to the YALE Hockey team and their parents/families.

What a great achievement!

^Just heard from S2 that they are selling t-shirts: “For God, For Country and Four Zero”,  haha! Those clever kids!

Thanks so much for all the wisdom I have gleaned from all the Yale parents. I will now be a Yale parent of the class of 2017. We are so excited! D had a great time at BDD. I will be back often for more wisdom, and hopefully will be able to share some of my own as we begin our Yale experience.

@musicmerit, congrats to your D and I’m sure she will enjoy her time at Yale as much as my S is enjoying his. Welcome to the club and feel free to contribute to the forum whenever you choose. ;)

Welcome musicmerit! This forum has been so helpful to me during this year (my D’s first) at Yale. I’m happy to be able to share what I have learned with the new pre-frosh parents.

musicmerit, Welcome! So happy to have you join us here. I have found this forum a wonderful source of assistance throughout the last 8 years or so, and have had 2 sons attend Yale–one has graduated and one is a junior currently. So, feel to PM me if you have any questions as well.

Hi All

New Haven is not firmly into spring weather yet, eh?
Saw the temps yesterday and know our k1 is ready to be warm again…

60’s today…getting better. It will feel good to have Spring before the heat/humidity of summer. I hate when Spring is shortened by a long winter.

Have not been in this position before. DD will be working up until the end of finals, which does not leave a lot of time for packing. Does anyone know if the 12 pm deadline to vacate the colleges is strict? I think that this may be an artificial deadline that is set to make sure that students get their keys into the offices by COB. Anyone know?

It has been awhile, so the rule may have been changed. DS always followed the deadline rule.

^ Not sure about that key rule–I do know that storage does close promptly!

Last yr K1 was in a rush to get everything to storage (roommate left early after exams and K1 moved everything alone) and to get keys turned in

In our experience, the key cards shut off at 12 noon sharp. That’s how the deadline is enforced. This limits access to the room quite a bit. If you have a three-person tag team, you can still shuttle items out from the rooms after 12 pm–we had to do that one year, but I think we were out by 1 pm or so. There wasn’t a problem with returning metal keys slightly late, as I recall.

Did you receive the shipping/storage flyer from AllCollegeStorage.com. I was planning on shipping D’s stuff with CollegeBoxes for the first time, when I received this flyer from the Associated Student Agencies. Prices for AllCollegeStorage seems slightly lower than CollegeBoxes. Both ship via FedEx and at a cheaper rate than via FedEx directly since I don’t have volume pricing with Fed Ex. Has anyone tried either service before? Thoughts?
