Red Scarves - i believe are a sign of belonging to the Asia Society.
Latin Honors - get no color signal or scarves whatsoever. At the diploma ceremony in their residential colleges, their names are called by the Master and they stand for a round of applause.

Yale parents:

S completed his four years on Monday afternoon and with that ends my own indirect relationship with Yale. Many thanks to all of you querying and responding on this thread over the years. From move-in tips to what to wear at commencement I have found this the most personally useful place on CC in the last few years. It has influenced many of my decisions about where to stay, how to travel, what to pack, and other details about Yale logistics based on the best source of information, experienced Yale parents.

To new parents my advice is to first search this thread for answers to your questions. Chances are they have already been answered here in previous years. And if you can’t find it, ask here, because this is where the experts are. My one tip, cliche though it is, is that you won’t believe how fast it has gone once it comes to the end. It feels as if it was but a few months ago when we were moving him in through Phelps Gate.

Good luck to all of you and your students.

Edit: Oh, and a shout out to entomom for her supervision of this forum. Your instincts for guidance without undue interference are very accurate.

Well, my mistake about the red scarves was embarrassing. QMP’s friends all had them.

There were all sorts of scarves and other items–for example, students in JE all had nice green sashes, while students in Morse had foam axes (like the axe on their college seal). There were also kente cloth sashes.

The college is not very strict about additions to academic regalia.

^ So those were axes? I thought they were lobsters!

Congrats on your child’s graduation, Descartesz! I’m sure it’s a bittersweet time for you. My DS will be graduating next year and I’m already feeling a little sad at the thought of it (though I will NOT miss the tuition payments!!!) Good luck to your kiddo - and come back and visit us. You are now the one with all the answers :)

Congratulations to your Yale graduate Decartesz! And I echo your sentiments regarding entomom, truly an “Ivy League” moderator :).

To those Yale parents with graduates this year, what are most of your graduate’s classmates/fellow graduates doing? Are they graduating gainfully employed? going on to further education? on the hunt for full time employment?

Descartesz, Congratulations to your S’s graduation. DS was sad when he was graduated - he really wished he would have more of the UG years.

DS is in the class of 2010. You may ask: why am I still here often? He is still a student there. So I am still very interested in all things related to the school, Transportion, New Haven. Just think of this, he would stay in New Haven for at least 10 years, if not more.

Among DS’s freshman year suitemates of 6, one went to law, two to medicine (one of them took a gap year first), the other 3 headed to NYC for various kind of jobs (I am not familiar with the kind of jobs they had. I do know several of them shared an apartment there which costs $3000 a month to rent. DS visited them there many times.) None to a PhD or MS program.

Ditto. BTW, the one thing of value Yale sent to us as parents was a refrigerator magnet with the tuition due dates printed on it.

My son graduated too–but we will have at least two more years of tuition, because he’s going to graduate school.

Hi All

Have been gone for weeks.
Saw K1 last week for a meal. Heard about move out stories.
Last year K1s roommate left early and K1 packed all of the boxes, moved a futon, a flat screen tv, a fridge and the boxes alone…
At move in in Aug, DH flew up with K1 to help move everything…
and the roommate just appeared… :(

SOooo this yr the roommate is moving off campus and K1 is staying on campus (had planed to move off yet the group couldn’t find a apartment for 4 they liked.)

So K1 packed all personal belongings and moved the stuff to the room for next year as well as storage. QUite an event since with exams and team/EC there is little time.
Later in the day after K1s stuff was done, K1 helped teammates…
Got a text from the roommate wondering if K1 would come help pack up/move…
Seriously!!! K1 was happy to not have the time after being taken advantage of 2x before.

My ears must have been burning, I haven’t participated on this thread for quite awhile and in fact have been trying to wean myself of the CC addiction.

Thank you for the kind words, they are much appreciated!

Congratulations to all of the new graduates and a special thanks to Descartesz for taking charge of the annual Pledge thread.

Welcome to the parents of all incoming frosh, it’s the beginning of a fun and exciting four years.

Hello everyone, I have a question about short-term rent (subletting) at Yale (NH). My D will be studying/doing research this summer at Yale School of Medicine from mid-June until mid-August. She is an incoming sophomore from another Ivy - we know now one at Yale…
Please help with pointing towards how and where could we find out about subletting in a safe neighborhood - hopefully, there are Yale students interested in subletting for June -August.

Appreciate any response and advise on the matter.
Thanks

^^ At this late date, your best bet would probably be: [new haven sublets & temporary classifieds - craigslist](http://newhaven.craigslist.org/sub/)

2thePoint – Does your D have a Yale ID/log-in as a summer student? If so, you could also look at the listings on the YaleStation website:

[Housing - YaleStation, the Yale University Portal](http://yalestation.yale.edu/market/?t=housing)

bookmobile - unfortunately, D does not have Yale ID…

2thePoint: In that case, Yale’s off-campus housing page seems to have an option where you can create some sort of account without a NetID:

[Search Listings | Off Campus Housing](<a href=“Off Campus Living | It's Your Yale”>Off Campus Living | It's Your Yale)

That said: My son and friends found their summer sublet on Craigslist.

Good luck!

Yes my daughter and her friends also found their place on craigslist. There were lots of options at the time (which was about 6 weeks ago). It is a bit late now, but if places are left they may be desperate! Generally it’s a buyer’s market in the summer. East Rock is considered a nice neighborhood (it’s where postdocs and grad students tend to live) if a wee bit far from campus (It is where my daughter is this summer).

ETA: also she might consider posting on craigslist herself; there may be kids there who have a house bigger than they need for the summer and wouldn’t mind having +1

Thanks, donnaleigh, bookmobile for helpful links and sharing your stories. Working through the Craiglist - hopefully will find the suitable option…

I do not know if anybody has been mentioned this. The summer in New Haven could be quite humid and hot. Although AC may not be a necessity, it is nice to have it for that month or two. (Especially for us southers who are used to be in an AC room All the summer time.)
