Yale Parents thread

Hi- My daughter will be attending Yale in the fall. What bank do most of the students use for their banking?

My info may be somewhat outdated as I heard some new bank has set up a branch near campus.

When DS was at Yale College, we set up an account at BOA. He also had a credit card from another bank. At that time, I think BOA had an ATM machine in one of the buildings (likely just outside of the now Bass library.)

If your D is in TD, maybe Chase Bank is not far away.

BOA has an ATM in Durfee’s by Old Campus–very convenient. Both of my S’s went with BOA accounts while at Yale.

There is also a TD Bank right near campus; S used that one since there’s also a local branch that I could access (we also have BoA, but they charged higher fees.)

my son has a Chase College account and finds it easy to use…location is:
[Chase Bank and ATM - YaleStation, the Yale University Portal](http://yalestation.yale.edu/guide/?id=8779a5a1-9c4c-402a-b10f-5561de1703f0)
We use Chase too so the accounts are linked so I can easily transfer $$ to his account online!

I think what clarimom posted is right: BOA has an ATM in Durfee’s.

It worries me how quickly I could forget this, especially when DS lived in the same building his freshman year.

At home, we do not like the service of BOA very much. But we still maintained a small account there. When DS graduated from high school, BOA refused to give DS a credit card, but Chase was willing to give him one (with a very low limit at first). So I think DS actually used Chase credit card and debit card more often than his BOA checking account.

DS often flies a long distance. So we think he needs access to credit cards.
A lot of money is in principle at his disposal. Luckily, he is not big on spending money. (His only “weakness” is once in a while he wanted to update his music gear.) When he needs to buy some slightly big item (say, more than 50 dollars), he would discuss it with us and asks our “approval” first.

My daughter’s in TD, and we all bank with Chase anyway, so that was the obvious choice for us two years ago. Transferring money easily is nice to be able to do. However, my daughter typically just uses her ATM card as a debit card, deposits checks with a smart phone app, and so has had very little need even to use the ATM machine at Chase (maybe twice a semester). So if another bank is more convenient for your family, I would say that worrying about ATM fees is a minor worry.

Hi, I will be a Freshman in the fall, and have an utilities question. Are all utilities(electricity, water, etc.) included in the cost of Housing? Thanks! I know this is a parents thread but I figure many of you have experience in paying the bills :)

gerbil: unless as an upperclassman you decide to move off-campus – you pay no separate utility bills.

so all utilities are included as part of the housing cost? sweet.

You’ll have to pay to do laundry.

Hi All

Been out of pocket a bit–
K1 is flying home as we speak–Had expected to be training and competing with sport this summer…and sustained an injury.

Question–Has anyone handled sports injuries due to varsity sport at Yale at a facility other than DUH?
K1 has the full Yale student health plan and we want that as the primary insurance on this…then the family health insurance as secondary. Since this is followup care from while on campus and under supervision of coach/team/trainer etc…

Thoughts…ideas, pitfalls?

As far as banking…K1 has had no need for a local acct.
Since everything can be done with a credit card of debit card, K1 carries both and can get cash anywhere from the acct here (and we can easily add $)
and with a card from my AmEx and my Visa, is set.

Meals are on the school plan. Very little need for money/cash since purchases at bookstore, local shops etc all take credit cards. And using Amazon/Prime and the family acct…no issues re books.

Is there a ‘sibling advantage’ at Yale? Son (class of '15) was an academic star and accepted everywhere. Daughter (applying next year) is a very good student but a longish shot by the numbers. Have any of you with multiple kids at Y suspected that your 2nd or 3rd got some sort of bump? D has no ‘hook.’

^D1 feels there is based purely on antidotal evidence while she was there (D2 deferred, then accepted). Others here have stated opinions/data otherwise.

I’ve known siblings that didn’t get in (not twins, different years) and both were great students, and a double legacy. Nothing is a given although some schools will say it’s a “check-mark” on the list.

No sibling advantage for admissions when I was a student per the admissions office. I expect it would be easier to write a compelling “Why Yale” paragraph as a younger sib.

An alternative to Chase and BoA, which are the two most convenient commercial banks, is to open a Fidelity Investments Cash Management Account. You will get a debit card that rebates all ATM fees so your kid does not need to worry about finding a particular bank’s ATM to avoid those. You get the usual stuff like a smart phone app to deposit checks and free checks. There is a Fidelity investor center on Chapel street near campus IIRC.

Thanks, I never considered that as an option.

Thanks Yale GradandDad, I never considered opening a Fidelity Cash Management Account.
