Yale Parents thread

My second child went to Yale. The third applied and did not get in. The fourth applied, was deferred EA and accepted in the spring. I think he was a slightly stronger candidate in some ways, although number two was strong in some other ways. The sibling who got in was a lot more like his sister who went there in terms of interests, strengths, etc. So maybe there is a type of student they like.

So we received a mailing from “Yale Associated Students Agencies” for linens and such today. It looks remarkably similar to the packages offered to us four years ago at another university. We bought but were severely disappointed by the quality.

Any parents have experience with this outfit?

Yes, and don’t bother. You can get better items at Target or Bed, Bath & Beyond.

Agree with QM. A quick drive to Milford’s Westfield shopping mall gets you the usual mall fare (Macys, etc) and right next door is Target and Walmart, across the street Bed Bath and Beyond. Target and WM have a good selection of XL twin size sheets and bedding for the dorm beds. Walmart.com XL sheet sets are $21 (just bought them).
For those thinking of renting a frig, you can get Walmart to deliver a brand new one for just about the same price as the rental fee. **Not all dorms provide storage of frig over summer so plan accordingly.
Save your $ for tuition.

Most colleges are too high for sheets and the quality isn’t very good. Closer than Milford is Hamden which also has Walmart, BB & Beyond, Marshall’s, TJ Maxx, Kohl’s and others, all in 2 plazas next to each other.

Does it make sense that a student with a student job at Yale would receive information from TIAA-CREF on a YALE UNIVERSITY 403(B) TAX DEFERRED SAVINGS PLAN?

Can anyone explain this? I’m unfortunately not very financially literate.
Thanks!

On the one hand, the student’s tax bracket is likely to be lower now than at any time in the future, including the period after retirement. So from that standpoint, it doesn’t make sense. If the student needs all of the funds from the student job to pay tuition and/or reduce loans, then contributing to what sounds like essentially a retirement fund is probably a very low priority.

This might not make any sense financially–however, psychologically, it might be worthwhile to start the habit of saving for the long term when one is first able to do it.

Likely, certain job classifications fall under the rules where the 403B is offered. A work study job, to earn money toward FinAid, probably isn’t much. But if the student feels inclined to do so and has spare money, by all means, go for it. The earlier the better.

I don’t suppose the university is offering matching funds? If so, that would change the picture - Yale’s match is very generous.

Quick question: Does anyone know if parents would be allowed to pick up the room key in the fall? (without student) S is arriving at last minute due to an internship and we had planned to bring him things he had left at home as well as help with moving the boxes from storage. But now he won’t be there when we are. So, hoping to be able to get into his room.

Try calling the residential college dean’s office to find out.

Shouldn’t be a problem to get the key. My son was on FOOT as a freshman and we were able to get the key to his suite and get everything moved in prior to his arrival.

Picking up a key should not be a problem. Kids on FOOT arrive quite late, so parents often get the ball rolling so to speak. I had no trouble picking up my daughter’s key for TD.

Does anyone know when the dining halls will open in August? I’m trying to plan my daughter’s return to campus. She wants to get back as early as possible, but I’d like to minimize the amount of time/money that she’ll have to spend eating out. Her roommate with the fridge doesn’t get back until Aug. 25, so keeping food in the room will be a little tough.

Last year they opened at lunch on Tuesday August 28 for upperclass registration. If they keep to that schedule it will be Tuesday August 27 this year. Maybe they would tell you for sure if you call them? (203) 432-0400
Good luck!

If memory serves correctly, the first meal served to upperclassmen in their houses is the Sunday before classes start. So, looking over the 2013-2014 academic calendar, that would be Sunday, August 25th.

Here is where I found the August 28 date (scroll down for the dates):

gibby, I hope I’m wrong and you’re right, though. Maybe freshman can start eating earlier than others? I can’t remember!

As I recall, the Freshman started being fed on their arrival date (Friday), but upperclassmen are on their own for awhile.

Yalemom2, your link seems to prove my memory wrong – at least for upperclass students.

thought the dining opened the first day of class for upper classmen…

recall freshman yr that beyond freshman lunch w parents in the res halls after convocation, the dining wasn’t open…though they had some dining on the day of freshman registration…

The '12-13 dates seem to confirm that. The kids are on their own over the weekend- which was a big surprise for our student as a freshman…as we expected dining to be open.

Last yr K1 moved in the day before the frosh and hung out with friends…don’t know when K1 will go back this yr…Probably need to ask that question and look at flights
