Does anyone know the configuration/room dimensions of the suites on the second floor of Bingham section C (Calhoun side). Room assignment includes 2 doubles and 1 single. Trying to guess whether 2 futons & a chair could fit in common room & whether beds bunked. Wish we had floor plans.

It seems that the dining halls are not open for freshmen move-in day, Friday 8/23 until Monday when they start normal service. Is this correct? I’m planning a dinner for Friday for “our” suite parents. Can I assume that students will be fed at the Friday evening orientation program?

Normal service for the dining halls starts Tuesday 8/27 at lunch.

I’m not sure why they do that - surely they expect people to show up just a little earlier than 18 hours before classes start. It just seems kind of cheap of Yale not to open even just one dining hall starting Sunday, for those already on campus that might want to eat.

Check the calendar for opening days - looks like freshman get lots of opportunities to eat on campus after Friday.

Thanks musicmerit - I will nudge my kid to organize dinner with his suite mates Friday evening.

My S was on the 2nd floor of Bingham last year (2 doubles and 2 singles) and the common room was fairly large. They had a couch, window seat, several chairs and a coffee table plus 2 fridges and a tv…it was always messy but they loved it!

Look at all of those meals for freshmen!!! That didn’t exist a few years ago for my rising Jr. Glad it has been remedied…
Though now my rising Jr will be on campus (required for campus work) on Wed before freshmen arrive and dining won’t open for upper classmen til the following Tuesday.
Maybe those who are working will have a meal pass, idk. I do know the upper classmen eat out a lot that first week

Only 2 more move-in’s for us…it has flown by…and like last yr DH will fly in with K2 in August to help with the heavy lifting.
K2 starts back to hs/school the same day so we will stay home. (K2 is a rising hs sr)

Each year I read posts with parental concern about what kids will eat before the dining halls open. Unless your kid has some special issues, or there simply is no money to spare, this is not really a problem. There is plenty of food for purchase right near campus, and the students will go in groups to get it.

also, there is a fair amount of free food on campus during those days, thanks to recruiting by student organizations, etc.

There is a full-service large grocery store less than a mile from campus. Downtown New Haven (the area right around campus) has a few dozen eateries, ranging from Dunkin Donuts to Union League Cafe ($$$). When my kid was feeling cheap, she shopped at the grocery store and ate salads/yogurt/pbj sandwiches for sustenance, cheap restaurants for meals with friends. I think she enjoyed getting her own food together. Cafeteria fare gets old fast.

There’s a vibrant food cart culture at the Whale parking lot–the hockey rink. My son, who is in a lab on Hillhouse this summer, had Thai today, Mexican yesterday. There’s a similar scene on York by the hospital. New Haven is a moveable feast. And everyone can’t wait for their first apizza.

mimk6. Sorry I can not PM you because I am new. Could you PM me, please?

Agree that there’s a vibrant food cart culture.

DS once told us that, after a winter storm last year, some food cart vendors showed up while almost all restaurants were still not open for business.

It is sad that the Au Bon Pain at Broadway and York Street was closed this May. Hopefully, that store will not be opened as yet another high-end clothing store. The kids need food more than the clothes. (I also miss the Copper Kitchen too.)

I heard a Chipotle was opened at Chapel St and Church St but the waiting line could be long.

Don’t expect food in the Au Bon Pain location. According to the Alumni Magazine, the building will undergo a major renovation to give it a “taller, more imposing facade” and put in retail to create a “critical mass of tenants to attract not only members of our community but shoppers from around the region”–destination shopping. Where will they put that additional parking?Yale cancelled the ABP lease after planning for a similar restaurant across the street. Broadway is Yale’s commercial district–it owns most if not all the resl estate–and they have been working hard for the past couple of decades to make it look like Harvard Square, although the first thing they did in their makeover was to kick out the Yale Coop, now defunct after 115 years, and bring in the Barnes and Noble.

The Educated Burger has pretty tasty food including a veggie burger that passed my daughter’s critical assessments. : ) That’s a few door down from B & N.
She also recently ate at a Mexican restaurant (new management?) on York or High which is walking distance from there…prices weren’t bad.
They are inundated with yogurt/burger places now but my daughter really loves the carts, especially the Thai cart.
Finding reasonably priced food isn’t always easy, they take advantage of students that can’t leave, but you can and always ask for any discounts.

I shed no tears for Au Bon Pain or any other chain place when there are plenty of smaller local places to eat nearby.

Thanks Sarafina! This is very helpful. Do you remember if the double bedrooms had a closet? Your S must be very excited about moving into his residential college.

My daughter is moving into a double suite in vanderbilt. It is a corner unit. Does anyone know if it has closets or wardrobes? If it is a wardrobe are their one or two?

My daughter will be a freshman this fall. We are in the process of purchasing her supplies. What would you say are the “must have” purchases, I should be making? Also, what was the item you purchased and later discovered that he/she did not use it.

I would like to thank all of the parents that answer our questions. I have found this thread to be very helpful. I hope in future years, I will be able to play it forward.

Lynnparent, if you are not from the area it is wonderful to be able to pre-order (no payment required upfront) from Bed Bath & Beyond & pick up your order in Milford, 20 minutes from Yale. I think my daughter’s most loved item is her BBB mattress topper. The Yale mattresses are thin.

You really do not know about wardrobes, closets, and available space until move-in Friday when you see the room and they determine who is sleeping where and how the furniture will be arranged. My dd was assigned to a long skinny double, but playing around with the furniture we figured out a way to de-bunk the beds, by putting both chest of drawers under one bed, and having that bed slightly higher. We brought a measuring tape and were also able to fit a couple of Rubbermaid drawer units into some nooks and crannies for additional storage. We stayed in New Haven until Sunday and made runs to Target, Home Depot, Ikea, BBBeyond, and Costco.

If you go to BBBeyond they have supply lists for each college, including Yale. But the suitemates need to coordinate larger purchases like microwaves, futons, rugs, printers, fans, extra lighting, etc. My dd’s suitemates were not really able to figure any of that out until after they arrived on campus and saw the the rooms, but they did pre-order the rental fridge. You can PM me if you have specific questions.
