Yale Parents thread

D moved in today - way less storage available than in her freshman room. Desk has no drawers, she has a wardrobe with 3 tiny drawers, no bedside table, no closet in the suite. Guess she’ll have to be creative.

Sorry about the futon, fogfog! D’s room apparently was used over the summer, and her futon now has a stain on it that didn’t used to be there. Gross!

Lynnparent, don’t forget the fan, and don’t forget to bring snacks, cold drinks, cleaning supplies, and garbage bags. The university will leave a few command strips in the room, I think. And don’t worry- freshman move-in day goes like clockwork. You drop your kid and stuff off, kid gets keys and ID while you go park, then take a shuttle back. Upperclassmen will have carried everything to the room by the time you get back (well, OK, in our case, almost everything - we later found that someone had rebelled against making yet another trip to the 5th floor and left one of D’s bins outside by the entryway door).

Hello all. I have been a silent observer and learner on this forum since last summer. Thanks to all of you for sharing your wisdom and helpful hints, I have gained much from your insights. Maybe I can pay it forward as my DS moves in tomorrow. One question, on that note. Since my son will be returning from FOOT around noon, will I be able to pick up the room key in the morning? Thanks for your help :-)

Yes, we picked up our son’s key two years ago when he was on FOOT so it should not be a problem. Make sure you have a fan (tower is best) and set that up (bring basic screwdrivers) first thing or you will sweat to death setting everything else up.;)

Thank you so much Kdog. We had been wondering about what type of fan would be best as well.

My dh said he wouldn’t be surprised if summer program kids moved stuff around etc. Who knows where K1s nice futon and lamp have gone. The loveseat there now needs to be aired out/demolded…YUCK…
K1 has sprayed it Febreeze. I wonder if the Dean/Master will hear about kids complaining their belongings went missing over break - The stuff should be there and in the same condition.

I realize it is a convenience for the kids–yet since Yale is making $ on those rooms over summer…the kids stuff should be cared for properly.

CIEE83 Is your student going to ask the Master what the deal is etc?

I feel your pain. My son lost his tower fan and all his plastic storage bins last summer. Thank god he is in an apartment now. :o I think Yale tells them to leave things at their own risk over the summer.

Unfortunately, I also think the stuff left in dorm rooms is at the students’ own risk. It’s a real problem, since the common rooms are unfurnished, and thus you really need to put some stuff in there.

Hadn’t occurred to me to complain, Fogfog, and I don’t think I will. It’s an Ikea futon, and I took the futon cover home over the summer, so it’s the bare mattress that was stained. They can turn the mattress over, and it’s not exactly a collector’s item. But if someone had removed it and/or replaced it with something else, I’d be pretty steamed. It’s a little hypocritical of Yale to provide these huge unfurnished common rooms and then make it so difficult to store things over the summer.

My kid wasn’t allowed to store the futon in her common room over the summer, so we paid for storage. Now I’m feeling happier about spending that money. She doesn’t hit campus until Sunday, so we’ll see how everything held up.

Has anyone’s kid arrived after business hours? How do they get their room keys? My son will arrive late Saturday evening. He emailed the staff in his residential college this evening, but I’m unsure if they will respond tomorrow, it being a weekend.

I believe they could contact security for help with keys.

Has anyone ever had actual success with any kind of furniture request from housing? Any tips? Is there any hope for exchanging a mattress that seems like the springs might be shot? Or does the kid just have to adjust to sleeping on something that feels like a waterbed?

mimk6, I vaguely remember we were concerned about arriving late too when DS was an UG student. We decided (at one time at least) to let DS stay at a hotel near BDL airport for one night. It is not that ideal either as it would be too boring to stay there unless it is absolutely necessary (i.e., snow storm after winter break is the top reason.)

At one time, DS needed to get back to campus during a winter storm (after a “short trip”.) CTLimo stopped the service. Somehow he could find a cab driver at the airport who’s willing to take him back to Yale. I heard it took over 2 hours as the cab driver drove extremely slowly. It really scared us. (We prefered that he stayed at a hotel near BDL overnight.)

Mcat2, we did that last year for the pre-orientation trip because campus housing was not yet an option and he had to arrive the night before. But it is an option now, he just needs to get into it! I imagine he can crash on a friend’s sofa if he can’t get into his room.

We arrived at Yale after hours yesterday and were able to get the key from a person on call (cell # posted on master’s office door. All of DS’s furniture–futon, lamp, bookcase–were in his room. The Yale-supplied desk chair had some splinters in the seat that looked rather dangerous–a quick call to Facilities and it was promptly replaced. So good news all around!

Thanks everyone for your tips and advice. My daughter started her freshman year yesterday. Everything went well. I couldn’t ask for a better welcoming.

Glad to hear it, Lynnparent. I was impressed last year at how welcome the freshmen were made to feel.

DS almost always wears running (or walking) shoes like the ones from New Balance, but recently has the need to wear more formal looking dress shoes for a long time.

Could any parent here give me some pointers to what brand/model is a comfortable one? It has to be of the color dark brown (DS’s tired of wearing black “orchestra shoes” - the only kind we know how to buy.) If it is as comfortable as running (or walk) shoes, it would be the best. The price is not a big concern but we need to buy it all by ourselves in a hurry without him being here to try it out as he won’t come home for quite a while.

Thanks in advance.

Found that Dunham is made by the same company which makes New Balance running shoes last night. A pair of shoes from Dunham was ordered and is on the way to DS now.

A slight concern is whether it looks “formal” enough.

Kind of answer my own question here. LOL. But the speed of execution in offering the help to DS is important for us in this case.

It’s odd that a language placement exam (that’s not just taken by freshmen) was scheduled at the same time as a mandatory registration meeting in residential colleges.
