Yale Parents thread

How did all of the move in-s go for the freshmen?

We haven’t heard a peep from K1 (a Jr)…so have no idea about the missing lamp/futon - switched for the loveseat/lamp etc. Registration for upperclassmen was today. Fingers crossed the “planned” courseload was accomplished.

Move in was great. Common room is fairly empty but they are working it out. I remember advice on here to stay out of it so I am. Course selection went well. Still a slot or two up in the air due to too many great choices. So shopping classes will happen. Some classes are rarely offered so D is torn about choices.

I am so grateful for all the insight I got here to prepare for the start of her Yale experience.

Our Junior is pleasantly ensconced in swing space this year with one suite mate who he’s been with since freshman year. Swing space is really nice, fully furnished (including common room furnishings), with a kitchenette including microwave, sink, fridge, etc., and a very spacious common room. His freshman year suite group had to break up this year as there was not enough room for juniors in his RC but they will all reunite for senior year back at the RC. He’s happy to be where he is this year, it’s a nice respite from the hustle and bustle of the RC. Class choices are narrowing as he looks to satisfy major requirements for his double major, but all looks good. Hopefully shopping goes well.

yalemom15 - what RC is your child in? I thought that all of the colleges had completed renovations. Are they starting over or did I miss one? :)

DS was in swing space in one year while his RC was renovated. He liked it.

I once read that swing space could be used as an “overflow” space for some RC. But this was several years ago. So I do not know if this is the case here.

^That doesn’t surprise me. McClellan on the Old Campus serves as upperclassman overflow as well (I lived there 2 years – loved it!)

My daughter is in swing space this year, has a nice single, common room and small kitchen but no stove, just 2 burners and the fridge is the small dorm size one. (I was surprised about that) There is just 2 of them though so it will be fine. They wanted swing space because of the common room and other amenities.
A lot of light and nice large elevators for moving things in…and she has a great view.

my2 sunz, ^^My son’s in Trumbull, the smallest RC (yet IM champs this past year!!). They routinely have spill-over into swing space, mostly juniors.

Where is swing space? On campus? Off campus?

It’s a residence hall built between the gym and the power plant-- Originally meant to house students from colleges that were going through extensive renovation. Talk was that once the renovations ended, much of the housing space would go to Grad students. But it seems some RCs assign their overflow students there.

McClellan Hall on the Old Campus is also used for some overflow–I think it’s still being used for JE, post-renovation.

Hunt, you’re right. DS is in JE and he thought he might be in McClellan last year (jr. year) but ended up staying put.

You can live in swing space as a senior if you want, some like it because of the kitchen and common room, gives more variety.

The downside for Swing Space is that the students need to walk to RCs for the meal. But I think they have AC, if I remember it correctly.

Mcat2 that’s is true, a pleasant surprise as my daughter was holding her fan. Each room has a control. Nice little courtyard with gas grill and for the Morse students, they are just across the street so RC is very close.

McClellan has had about 40 people from JE as far as I can remember. I lived there two years (Go Spiders!) and it was fun to be back on the Old Campus. The Suites in McClellan were fantastic too. Drop by the Octet which comprises the 4th and 5th floors. That was my senior year room.

Walking over to JE for meals was no big deal whatsoever. Plus if any of your morning classes were in LC, you could be in your seat 3 minutes after brushing your teeth!

After last year’s experience, I should have kept my expectations low, but I am already frustrated with the post office on campus. A package we sent to my son arrived in New Haven on Monday morning, according to the tracking site on USPS.com. He went to the P.O. today and they claimed they had nothing for him. If they don’t unearth it tomorrow, it will have been there for over a week by the time he can try again next Tuesday.

I just needed to say this (a) to vent; (b) to warn freshman parents sending packages, or whose kids plan to order books online, to tell their kids there may be significant delays. If it’s a mail volume issue, why on earth can’t this P.O. staff up a little at the beginning of the year? Not a good way to start the term for kids hoping to avoid bookstore prices. It took ages last year to get some of the books he ordered. Again, I should have expected this based on last year, but it is very frustrating.

I concur with Bookmobile regarding the post office. I lost count of the number of times I sent packages that were delayed, and one was never delivered (although the delivery confirmation indicated that it had been). I registered complaints with the postal service, which later went to Consumer Industry Affairs due to the post office’s lack of follow through. I understand they are overwhelmed at this time of year (and at the beginning of spring semester); however, this has been going on for how many years now, and nothing can be changed? My best solution (although it does not work for Amazon purchases) is to ship Fed Ex ground to the RC. My D receives an email when the package arrives and it is always there with no waiting :)

I remember reading this last year. But I sent a USPS package to my D and she received it today, one day later than she was supposed to. So I was hoping they were doing better this year. Hoping her books get to her. Sorry you are having troubles this year too.

Yes re: the Post Office; my daughter is a Junior, and she had trouble the last two years. Her birthday is today and last year her birthday cookies were delayed a week longer than they should have been:( So today we’ll drive there to deliver them :). She seems to have taken my advice to just buy the &*$% books at the bookstore. She tries to be frugal but the delay was bothering me than it was her, and since I’m paying for the books…
