Yale Parents thread

Security on Yale campus itself will be fine, but it’s never a good idea for someone to be walking alone off campus after dark–no matter what city the campus is in. I have never had any worries about the city of New Haven, but in any city one needs to use good judgement regarding safety. Thank you GeorgeBailey for being a responsible parent.

There are few bars in the Omni area, and depending on the night, there could be some rowdy people roaming around–although maybe not so much during the week. So, she should not be walking unaccompanied along that street late at night.

Clarimom, walked her to campus and it was absolutely fine- lots of students out and about. I definitely feel bette
Still planning on heading over there to get her if she doesn’t have someone to walk her back to hotel. We live in a safe area of a good size city and you are right- walking alone late at night is never a good idea. I always tell my kids to be very aware of their surroundings.

Just arrived in New Haven staying at New Haven Hotel…quite close to restaurants and campus it seems. Looking forward to seeing New Haven in the day time.

Very excited to be taking my daughter to BDD.

She is worried about me as I need to walk around in the evening! Am sure all will be fine. I’ve already spotted some BDD families in the lobby

Have a great time GeorgeBailey and DXBMUM!

My son finally made a decision!! A Yallie 2018:))

Hooray! Congratulations!

DD did to…Yale 2018… She loved BDD! Her host was amazing…

Yale magic at work! Congrats! :)

Yes! It was magical for her!

Eight years of magic ends for us on May 19 :(

Wow! 8 years? What an incredible ride!

Clarimom, Glad to hear that it was 8 years of magic for you.

For us, when everything is done, it will be 10 years (or even longer if it turns out that he stays put for another 3-4 years after his second graduation from Yale.) DS may as well call New Haven his second hometown!

Clarimom and mcat2, your children are very fortunate to have attended Yale. My daughter committed to Yale right after BDD and she could not be happier! I am really looking forward to the next 4 years!

It almost turned into more than 8 for us as well, mcat2, but in the end DS decided on a different school for graduate study. So, we’ll move on to another city in our lives now…but will always have fond memories of New Haven! We’ll miss it!

For all of you experienced Yale parents, any advice for us newbies?

The first year goes by really fast! So enjoy the time.
Moving my D out this weekend already! I feel like we just moved her in.
I love your picture!

I would say the four years go by really fast! I can’t believe my son is graduating already!

Our issue is this, she will be 3 minutes away from home…which will be strange in a way. I want her to have the full college experience and not come home until break.

Last year, Family Weekend was only a month into school. I see it is later this year. So we saw D then. Fall break was a month later. Then Thanksgiving a month later, then the semester is over mid December! So we saw her about every 4 weeks, and we are much further than 3 minutes away! I think you have the right attitude going in.

Yes, I know that Yale is an amazing place, but I was really hoping that she chose a school that was farther away. She had lots of options and I had no say in the final decision. I hope she can grow being so close to home.
