Yale Parents thread

NewHaven mom: you can make your DD extremely popular w/her suitemates if you have a big home-cooked meal some Sunday evening in Sept. I guarantee it! One of my fr year suitemates lived outside of New Haven and just getting off campus, sitting in an actual family’s dining room – was HEAVEN!

BTW: your DDs advice to her suitemates and nearby friends about the best places to go and get stuff in New Haven will be a godsend to them too!

Lol okay! I will have to stock the fridge AND tell her to get her NHV style Zagats guide ready! Lolol

3 minutes away from home?
We live over one thousand miles away. We are envious of you.

Do you know how much “work” is it to move all the stuff to campus at the beginning of the fall semester and move it out of campus at the end of the spring semester?! I still remember we had 6 check-in baggages followed by a shopping spree at North Haven when we helped DS settle down at the beginning of his freshman year.

After years of flying red eyes, I bet DS would rather have us live not so far away, even though he may think we nag too much occasionally.

DS had a suitemate whose parent is a faculty at Yale. Several suitemates teased him that he may end up stuck there for a half of his life. It turns out he left New Haven after his graduation from college.

Lol…yes, actually we are a straight shot down the street from Pierson. Wouldn’t it be a hoot if she landed there? A bit too close for comfort! I never went to college and so my dream was for her to go away, learn about life, continue to grow into a wonderful adult & get an amazing education. She will have to do it in her own backyard…lol

What’s even more hysterical is that Yale was on the NOT UP FOR DISCUSSION list up until early junior year. She had no interest whatsoever and wanted out of NHV. I was able to talk her into attending an open house in October of junior year…getting her there that morning was a chore but she was actually impressed by what she saw. It was a weak possibility until last fall. I guess a years worth of maturity made a big difference. And the rest is history. I’m still in shock that will call Yale her home this fall. Talk about a huge curve ball. :)

Congrats NHCTMom…so my daughter can pass the tour guide hat to her. lol. To be honest, I talked to her less being 5 minutes away than my other daughter 2 hours away but it was nice to move in/out being close and if they need something, no need to mail, etc. She will separate on her own…she’ll be close in one way, but not others. Congrats!

My DD will be 3,000 miles away so I am very jealous NCHTMom!

New Haven Mom: We live about 50 miles away, so it’s a relatively easy drive. We found that we would see our kid less than other families on parents’ weekend and such, since we’d just pop in for the late afternoon and dinner whenever she had some free time, instead of coming for the whole weekend, when she’d feel like she’d have to make time for us since “we’d come so far”. So you never know!

My son was a heavily recruited squash player, and there was only one school he wanted, which was Yale. He got recruited in September, got his likely letter in October, and the final acceptance in December. He is delirious with happiness and can’t wait to get there. BDD was a blast, and he just can’t wait for next year. Fortunately, we are within a ride on MetroNorth, so we are close, but not breathing down his neck. My husband is a Yalie, so my son will likely be in his college, which is Pierson. Now, I’m jealous and want to go to Yale too. :slight_smile:

Question,

We were both sent an email about a summer program for DD @ Yale. I clicked on the “resources” tab & it brought me to careers services counseling or something of that nature. What I found to be interesting is that under “health professions”, there was nothing for traditional med school. I saw chiropractic medicine, nursing, sports medicine, global health, occupational therapy, podiatry, pharmacy, even medical billing and coding…why wouldn’t the more traditional medical doctor be listed? I just found that odd. Or is that me?

I’m not sure what that is…I know they have summer school and a program for new freshman (my daughter was thiinking of being a counselor again before an internship came up) Are these classes or an orientaton type program?

@Debruns‌,

The program isn’t confusing me…lol it’s the category of “medical billing & coding”. I can’t imagine one spending $60,000+/year for a career in medical billing & coding. One can go to the local CC and learn how to become one for $1,000 maybe a little more?

Also, the absence of traditional doctor was missing. I kept looking at the list thinking that I was missing something. Seems incredibly odd!!

Yes, it’s 5 weeks of classes, seminars, activities, an introduction to residential college life, et al.

@roxlet‌

My DD goes to school with Pierson’s masters son. Incredibly nice young man, as is his father. I am kind of hoping that dd gets picked for Pierson!

Any suggestions on what local bank to use in New Haven for 2018 daughter? No preference for community bank versus national bank. The primary factor would likely be the availability of ATMs on and around campus. Thanks.

@mmDad1965‌ , I was advised previously in this long thread that Bank of America had ATMs on campus.

Thanks. I looked back through some of this thread and did not see anything.

I can’t figure out the search software, but there is this thread <a href=“Banks around Yale? - Yale University - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/yale-university/186602-banks-around-yale.html</a> which is pretty old. I’ll look for something more recent

Thanks. My general research on Yelp and otherwise seems to indicate Band of America has the most options.

I finally found the reference on page 212. For the future, I think it’s more effective to leave CC and google from “outside.”

Yes, Bank of America has an ATM right in Durfee’s on Old Campus as well as other locations around campus. Both of my sons have used it while at Yale.

Just a note about banks; we use Chase, and I find it very convenient for my daughter to have a linked account so that ahem, transfers can occasionally be made (actually it really has been handy for when she’s borrowed money for a spring break trip with her ballroom team, and the team can then pay her back and hence pay me back). There are a couple of Chase banks near campus (one near TD). But my real point is that she is a rising senior, and I don’t think she’s ever set food in the bank near TD even though she lives there. She almost entirely uses a debit card. So if for some reason it is more convenient to use a different bank, definitely consider it.
