Yale Parents thread

The last time this happened, the food bags had enough food to last for days, according to my kids.

OMG, my kid complained about her food bag. She said it had a sandwich, some fruit, chips and other odd items. The sandwich was ham. My D is vegan/vegetarian. Master Spooner let the freshman cut the line so they could go back on Old Campus where they were on a sort of lock down for the night.

Her FroCo went on a mission to find sandwiches for her and the two other vegetarians in his group. Her complaining was just minor since she has plenty of food in her room, including some vegan noodle bowls I brought up from Trader Joes. Her Australian and Greek suitemates are always getting food from home.

I am not worried in the least and she is fine. She’s happy to have a day off. I knew Mother Yale would have in under control.

@Tperry1982 - I thought of you when D told me what was in her bag. I was wondering if they made up any vegan bags.

Master Spooner apparently wasn’t there to let DS cut in line; he left because the line was too long. I’m sure he’ll survive – he said that he had a stash of pizza rolls

Btw, here near Newark, NJ, we are calling this “The Blizzard That Wasn’t.” DW will still be flying tonight out of EWK; dang!

@Tperry1982‌ , I haven’t been around this forum much since you joined, but do you always start your posts with OMG ? Our son is sorely disappointed in the snow accumulation from the storm, certainly not enough to build another giant snow submarine like they did in 2013!

As a townie, major props to Yale always for snow removal. For walkers and runners, its sidewalks are reliably clear and safe.

OMG @yalemom15 - not every post!!! Probably been around my teen too much. I definitely don’t use that language in my writings at work. I will modulate my outbursts in future posts to more closely fit the decorum of these threads.

My D is also very disappointed in the snow totals. But, they got a day off from school so she is fine.

@IxnayBob - the dining halls are open so your DS should be okay.

@Tperry1982‌ , OMG, you’re so overly dramatic! Sorry, couldn’t resist after you characterized me that way in another thread :).

I had noticed the two OMGs, which I think are the only ones I’ve seen you use in the hundreds of your posts I’ve read.

Yes, DS survived to eat another day

@IxnayBob - maybe I was just happy the last couple of days. Yalemom15 comment was probably tongue in cheek. I can take a good ribbing every one in awhile.

Yes, back to normal for our offspring. Hope everyone’s kids are happy with the semester so far. My D just finished her application for a summer language program which entails 4 weeks of instruction on campus and 4 weeks in Germany. I wonder who this child thinks is going to pay for this (along with tuition which does not stop during the summer months).

Hi all - I was just wondering…does anyone have any thoughts about fraternities? it had not even crossed my mind that my son would be even interested. When I went to school and where we are from they are NOT big at all

@oldladyandmom, I’m of a generation that disparaged fraternities. My son is interested, and I’ve made it clear that I have no intention of funding or supporting a misogynist or bullying organization. He assures me that the frats he’s looked at are not like that. I grilled him on the guys there, and specifically how their relationships with their girlfriends are (I’ve found that, sometimes, you discover more about boys/men a an oblique angle rather than head on). He maintains that it all appears respectful and even sweet to him.

My son is usually relatively aware (for an eighteen-year old). He is respectful towards girls/women. I can’t imagine he would stand for any serious hazing. He drinks but does not binge drink.

I’m becoming more tolerant of the idea. That said, he doesn’t have a bid

Fraternities and sororities at Yale are a much bigger part of campus life (and social life in particular) than they were when I was there. I think this may be, in part, because of the change in the drinking age. Personally, I don’t see this as a positive development, and several of the fraternities at Yale have had well-publicized issues in the last couple of years. I would just suggest that students considering participating in one of these organizations do research on what it is really like now (as opposed to years ago or on some other campus).

When I was at Yale, fraternities and sororities were banned from campus so they were not a part of our lives. I joined a graduate chapter of the sorority I wanted to belong to back then (AA sororities are active for life) and am very happy. If my D decides to join my sorority (which has a small presence on campus), then that will be great. If not, she can wait until later in life.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family of the Silliman student who passed away. I would not wish that kind of agony on my worst enemy. Every parent’s nightmare.

It is so sad. I appreciated Jonathan Holloway’s message.

She had gone home, so sad, and other suicides recently at Princeton and UPenn. I feel more needs to be done but not sure what and how, to help students.

I was momentarily stunned when my son told me this weekend that he was considering a frat. I also had not even contemplated that he would consider it…

She had flown back to California but the kids on campus did not know that. Also, there is no indication of whether or not she actually went “home” before the incident. My heart goes out to her friends in Silliman. I hear they are taking it really hard as should be expected.

Hope my questions will not offend any parents here in any fashion…Appreciate if you can offer some insiders’ tips.

How is the financial atmosphere among Yale students? We are from ‘somewhere out there’ State where, in some people’s imagination, only has fields, birds, and rivers. It’s just beyond my imagination that a high school has about 120-150 to apply for Yale every year. In our school, perhaps just a handful will apply! I am a little bit worried that my child will feel a lot of pressure to be around with those financially well-off peer. :frowning:

How much you normally give your child as monthly allowance?

Does your child join any summer program/camp that cost extra money? Do you pay for it?
Does your child go home during their Fall study break, Thanksgiving week-long break, and Spring break?

D comes from a similar small town. We don’t know of anyone ever from her HS that went to HYP. Maybe one a year to another Ivy or Stanford. Check out the stats on financial aid. I believe about half of the students get financial aid. So, yes, some will have a lot more money, some will have less than your D. Our D started out with a few thousand in the bank from gifts, babysitting, and working as a summer camp counselor the summer before freshman year. We do get financial aid. She is responsible for her spending money, books, and train tickets home. She may have spent around $2,500 freshman year, including her portion of some EC trips. There is so much to do on campus for free. She has not really mentioned feeling left out of any big spending activities.

She worked at the same camp last summer, so again built her account back up. Also did some babysitting during the month of May. She is not sure what she is doing this summer.

Freshman year she came home for all the breaks and two weekends for family events. She traveled with her ECs for spring break, one of which was greatly subsidized by the organization. She came home for a HS event one weekend in the Spring, so we saw her a lot less that semester.

This past fall she only came home for Thanksgiving. She will travel again for Spring break and come home for an event one weekend.
