Yale Parents thread

Does the schedule for opening days exist yet for public consumption? Until my husband sees for himself he will not feel urgent about getting a hotel room and I feel urgent enough for the both of us.

Also, we are getting lots of propaganda about Yale sheets. DS seems to recall something about them not being the best option from the Yale students FB page, but now he can’t find the reference. Thoughts?

You need the extralong twin sheets, but you can get them anywhere, like Bed Bath & Beyond.

We upgraded to the all cotton sheets, sold by the 4 year guarantee (my kid is an incredibly restless sleeper and destroys sheets.) I just washed them up and can report that they lasted the year in good shape. He did complain that they didn’t stay on well, but that may just be a function of having a foam pad and matress pad below, coupled with the restless sleeping. I bougt a queen sized matress pad to make sure it would stay on, and that seemed to work great because there was lots of extra to tuck under the mattress–considering a queen sized fitted sheet as well this year. A deeper pocketed x-long sheet would probably work as well.

We went ahead and ordered sheets from the place in the ASA mailings. I’m not sure how good of a deal it is but it seemed pretty convenient to me to have everything in one bundle that we can pick up on or near campus.

Does anybody know the quality of the sheets ordered from ASA, as compared to those from other places? I like the convenience, but I don’t want to be stuck with shoddy products.

@hzhao2004 - My son said he observed on the Yale student fb page that people were saying they didn’t care for the sheets, but he couldn’t find that thread again when I asked him details. I have heard that extra long twin sheets from most any source are just fine.

Not sure what the big deal is over sheets – we purchased twin XL’s from Bed, Bath and Beyond and they lasted 4 years: http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/1/1/344169-330-thread-count-100-cotton-sateen-twin-xl-sheet-set-turquoise.html.

The Company Store has higher thread count ones, with higher prices:
450 = http://www.thecompanystore.com/sheets/twin-xl-sheets/?prefn1=size&prefn2=threadCount&prefv1=XL%20Twin&prefv2=400
500 = http://www.thecompanystore.com/sheets/twin-xl-sheets/?prefn1=size&prefn2=threadCount&prefv1=XL%20Twin&prefv2=500

Welcome @Community2605 ! My son has also been assigned to Davenport. I hope your back is better soon!

As with most continental Europeans, I don’t use flat sheets so have no need for sets. I love the Company Store’s jersey knit sheets.

Ok another newbie question . . . any of your kids use the Yale laundry service? The flyer says it’s $540 per year for a basic plan or $805 for the enhanced plan.

I don’t know what washers and dryers cost in the residential colleges, but assuming it’s $1.50 per washer load and $1.50 per dryer load, and 2 loads/week x 30 weeks plus soap and fabric softener, it seems like do it yourself laundry might be around $200/year . . . have your kids found it worth the extra money to save some time by using the laundry service?

My son graduated last May. Among his friends, were the son’s and daughter’s of some of America’s wealthiest family’s (kids that grew up with maids and butlers) and every single one of those kids did their own laundry. IMHO, it’s a chore and a responsibility that everyone needs to learn how to do, regardless of the cost savings or the convenience of sending it out. Just saying . . .

Ditto.

@canoe2015 was also talking about cost of doing one’s own laundry. Haven’t I heard that use of washers and dryers is free at Yale?

Interesting, it sounds like the laundry service may not be that popular among students. Maybe that’s why they’re trying to get students to sign up for a full year prior to arriving on campus . . .

My kids did their own laundry. I will confess, though, that my first year my parents got me the laundry service, a gift that I always appreciated.

@Community2605, it’s probably a good thing it’s not free. Tragedy of the commons and all that :slight_smile:

I purchased laundry service for DS last year. He barely used it. I won’t purchase again.

Is ala carte for dress shirts done on an as needed basis? He doesn’t have an iron, and on occasion an ironed shirt is nice. Very occasional!

I believe each load costs $1.25 for the washer and another $1.25 for the dryer. (Remember to bring your own laundry detergent (powder or liquid): http://branford.yalecollege.yale.edu/facilities/laundry

@IxnayBob: When student’s need to have a dress shirt washed and ironed, they can take it to: http://www.bluejaycleaners.com. It’s on Broadway just down from the Apple Store and the Yale Bookstore. BlueJay also does laundry service, which is much cheaper than what Yale Laundry Service offers.
