Yale Parents thread

Thanks gibby, Blue Jay cleaners certainly has a convenient location and also it looks like it has better hours than the Yale Laundry Service.

My son as a freshman last year was in a suite of 8 and he was the only one without the laundry package. When he told me that I went ahead and purchased it for him, however he made me cancel it. My son always did his laundry at home so it wasn’t anything new to him. He was also the one who taught his suitemates how to clean the bathroom.
For this year 6 of them are staying together and that makes me so happy:)

I paid tuition today. I get two sensations at the same time. First, like I’m supporting the most amazing, wonderful 18-year-old in the world! Second, like I just exhausted my resources, and will work to build them back up so that I can do that again later this year!

^^ The water enters the bucket and the water leaves the bucket. Just be sure the hole isn’t too large.

I once worked with an engineer who was responsible for the facility where we were working. It was a portable office trailer, like a mobile home. Every time it rained, the water would pour into the building.
After he confessed the inability to stop the leak, I suggested that he add a hole in the floor!

Hi everyone being “international” (Canada) we just received the Yale flyer on laundry today. Wow it reads like you have to! You’ll be left out! anyway the reality is - no need! plus liked the added bonus offer of getting Town and Country for only $10. WOW like did they single out Ivy league kids on that one? okay, honestly, what kid reads Town and Country who reads Town and country anyway (sorry if I’m offending anyone) I admit to sneaking a peek while at the Hairdresser…

So, you’re the one who actually opens the junk mail!

I don’t think I’ve ever held a copy of Town and Country in my hands, although I did own a minivan that went by that name.

I suppose this news is very old and known by all, but I’m excited about it. I’m doing my shopping day with my son tomorrow. I can BUY the items at the Bed, Bath and Beyond near our home… and pick up the items on move-in day at the Milford, CT store! Yay!

My daughter turned down the Foot program today. She was stressed about not being the one to pack her things and set up her room. (She is a little OCD) Exactly how many kids do this program and will she feel left out in the end?

She will not feel left out. Of the two adjoining suites when my D moved in, I think only one of about 14 had attended Foot.

@musicmerit That is good because she is just as stressed about missing something important. It was a hard choice for her. I tried making her feel better by telling her that of all the options, they assigned her to the one hike she has already done. She is from CT and has done the one in Western CT already. That is making her feel a little better but it is still hard . I wish they didn’t move in the day they return.

@Memmsmom, it would have been fun, but it will be fine without FOOT.

The most meaningful thing for him (and apologies to him for condensing this so much, it’s actually quite moving when he tells it) was that each night a different kid got to highlight his “story.” For each successive kid, DS was amazed at how accomplished they were, and how he didn’t measure up. By the time it was his turn, he was stunned that the other kids thought that he was accomplished. I’m obviously biased, but I find Yale kids, as a whole, to be wonderfully modest and proud at the same time.

That experience can also happen in the conduct of normal Yale life.

As of the time of this article, around 350-400 students took a FOOT trip or 25-30% of freshmen. So it seem like it’s a substantial group that participates but most don’t.

@IxnayBob it is funny that you say that- my daughter felt the same way after Bulldog Days. She went in nervous that she didn’t belong and that they made a mistake. She worried everyone would be snobbish private school kids and that they were groomed for this. She felt less than special. But once she got to know a bunch of kids there she realized that they were very impressed with her too and that they all got along so well because in their hearts they were all the same. It was what made her certain she picked the right school for her.

I’m curious if anyone has looked into the tuition/room & board insurance that a third party offers (but the mailing on it came from Yale). It’s in case a student has to take a leave of absence due to medical reasons after the refund deadline. It seems like a pretty unlikely event for a healthy young person so my first thought is to skip it, but I’d appreciate any perspective if anyone has thought this through.

It’s an unlikely event, but that’s the point of insurance. It’s also likely overpriced.

My house is unlikely to burn down to the ground, but I insure it anyway. I take out the tuition insurance.

Thanks IxnayBob. IIRC it’s about $400 on a risk of about $55k (it pays up to 85% of tuition, room and board) so if the chances are greater than 0.7% I guess it’s worth it in concept. But of course the insurance company has to make a profit, and also to your point $55k would be a significant chunk of money down the drain in the worst case . . .I think I’ll look into it.

Hi an insurance I go for is for the loss of laptop etc. it’s Collegestudentinsurance. I received an email from their company randomly and had not sought it out. But who knows what will happen and it’s a small amount for a laptop or something else to be replaced. It covers for up to $10,000 loss for a small payment annually of 214.

@canoe2015, the older I get, the more I find myself exercising regret avoidance. If I “lose” $400, I won’t feel any worse than I feel that my house didn’t burn down and that I “lost” my homeowner’s premium for another year

Another way to think of it is that, if DS were to have to withdraw from school, the last thing I’d want to be concerned about is tuition.

Finally, and I’m sufficiently superstitious to be knocking on wood and looking for a salt shaker, DS plays club hockey on occasion. He had a concussion once that made him loopy for 6 weeks. I would not want him to feel pressure to return to school before he was ready, and he’s frugal to a fault.

Hey i have Tsunami insurance on our vacation home! enough said about not wanting things to happen but if I DO buy the insurance it won’t!
