Are those houses fairly anonymous looking? I saw my son’s team house where seniors live and it looked like any other house on the street - no signs or anything you’d have to know it was the team’s house…

This article has a picture and there is a sign on the front. One was a fraternity house.
For parents with experience of going to Family Weekend, what are your favorite events?
@Community2605 - I didn’t think you were contradicting me. I apologize if my post implied that. Just wanted to note that my kid wasn’t sad about not being the best - she was just overwhelmed in the beginning with all of it. This year as a sophomore she is so very happy and it is a totally different situation.
Hi all, my son is a freshman in JE and so far, so good. I finally really talked to him yesterday morning, after three weeks of short texts and calls - mostly on logistical items. The post office has not been a good experience, and his swipe card won’t work for laundry, but otherwise good. I’d also love to know what events are good for Family Weekend if you have suggestions!
I have yet to see a listing for events on Family weekend… we are doing football and concerts on Saturday so far. I am driving back in on Sunday for whatever but leaving the rest of the family at home (we are in CT)
Memmsmom, the schedule is listed online–is this what you are looking for? (“I have yet to see a listing for events on Family Weekend”) http://familyweekend.yalecollege.yale.edu/calendar/day/2015-09-25
I downloaded Yale Visitor app to my phone, which is very handy, with the family weekend 2015 events and campus map loaded. You can click the link provided by @Clarimom and then click Home to the family weekend home page. There is a link to download the Yale Visitor app.
Hmmm- I know that there are more events than these going on. I will see if I can find a more detailed listing of events. I tried to follow the links but did not get very far. Things like games and concerts etc. I will have my little boys with me and most of what they have listed would not be very interesting to them.
I have never been able to find other events like all the other musical groups on any list. They each often have a facebook event, but you have to look them up individually.
Anyone know of any traffic alerts for the Friday drive up? The pope is in NYC that day. Will 287 and Tappenzee be okay heading towards New Haven? Definitely will avoid 95 through NYC.
287 and Tappanzee should be relatively okay, although I’d allow extra time. Many locals are avoiding the city, many for the whole week. Yesterday I left NYC at 6:00 PM and drove uninterrupted until I hit 78 in NJ (I took Holland Tunnel). I made it back in a half hour, a trip that usually takes 50-90 minutes at that time. So, for those who have the option, I think that workers with more than one office (DW, for one) are avoiding the NYC-based office and are working elsewhere. Between the Pope, Obama, the Giants game (Thursday night), the end of summer-time Friday optional, etc., it is likely to be a perfect traffic storm.
Good luck to all heading to Parents Weekend.
@Memmsmom, it took awhile for the many groups to get listed, but there are now a lot of special events at this link - http://artscalendar.yale.edu/day/ - you can choose the day you want and also filter by “discipline.” I’m looking forward to my first - and last - family weekend. I was determined to get to one family weekend before my son graduated!
Does anyone know if The Yale Daily News will continue to be viewable on ISSUU.com? As of last week, it has not been regularly updating. My slow internet connection makes viewing yaledailynews.com difficult. Plus, I really liked the full newspaper layout on ISSUU.com.
I’m not sure but the YDN recently went to a new web platform that is slow to load and doesn’t work on my tablet . . . they may still we working out some bugs.
Our son’s last year…so graduation question for any who have experienced it. Did anyone stay in the dorms? I see that you can do that (sign ups not open yet) but was it a good option? We did it at Vanderbilt for graduation but the dorms we stayed in (actually my son’s freshman dorm) were only 5 years old so nice and good bathrooms…not the same level at Yale…so any feedback? Hotels are all booked and family is a half hour away so is an option.
The hotels right in New Haven are booked (with inflated prices), but there are places in nearby towns that work, as long as you have a car.
Will probably stay in the dorm…should be an interesting experience but was hoping to get feedback from someone who stayed there in the past few years. Would not book a hotel in a nearby town as we have family in a nearby town who would love to have us…just don’t want to deal with traffic and parking…has to be busier than Parents Weekend.
We found parking to be no trouble at all three years ago. There are a number of lots and garages near campus. It is a pain to not be able to go back to your room during the day, so that would argue in favor of staying on campus. Note that the dorms are not air-conditioned, and may require walking up steps. People who have done it say that it’s fun.
Here were my favorite parts of Family Weekend - The football game was a beautiful day, a fun atmosphere, an exciting outcome, though the disrepair of the facilities - especially the restrooms - was alarming. I loved the Gala concert on Saturday evening, and I was thrilled to see one of my music classmates from my tiny little liberal arts school in the midwest named as an arranger of a beautiful piece sung by the glee club. And Sunday morning service at University church was really special. Ian Oliver is a treasure.
I stayed in the dorm (Timothy Dwight) this past graduation weekend, along with DH, DS, and two 85 year old grandfathers of the graduate. We requested a “ground floor” suite based on the grandfathers, which we received, but it still included a half flight of stairs which was not easy for my dad, but we managed. DH, DS and I were one flight up from them. On each floor, we were the only “guests” so we had a more or less private bathroom. The rooms are of course spacious with the common room, but the beds are, well, you know. We were lucky with weather this year, not too hot. I really liked having a place to hang out with the family between “events”; it really made it nice. Our daughter’s college was TD (don’t know if that was accidental or on-purpose that we were assigned there) so that was nice too. All in all I’m glad we stayed on campus, just for having “our space”. There are A LOT of events and a lot of to and fro, and my dad wasn’t up for all of it, so having a “home” for him really helped.
