Yale Parents thread

I am a “graduated parent” and I’d never heard of Woads either. Yes I gather you got it right @canoe2015.

Thanks donnaleighg . . . probably not the last time I’ll be in the dark on the meaning of some Yale slang!

Hi i found this www.yalerecord.com/yale-slang/

Hi son confirmed Wednesday + Toads = Woads

My son (a new Yale grad) went to high school with Chris Christie’s oldest son (back when Christie was much more popular!). Security was on campus and at baseball games (you could recognize their Suburbans) but very innocuous. Was also at a Yale/Princeton hockey game at Princeton (where Christie’s son goes to college). Again, security was around, but not on top of him. I think the ‘celebrity’ kids just want to be treated like any other student.

PS> Toad’s is an over-18 establishment. Those between 18-21 get a wristband that indicates that they shouldn’t be served. Not saying this was the case with Malia, but she wasn’t doing anything illegal simply by being in Toad’s.

Thanks oldladyandmom, I’ll check that dictionary out.

@maryk912, I don’t think it’s of any importance as regards being in the club (i.e., I would have let her in also), but purely in the interests of accuracy, Malia is not yet 18. She was born on July 4th, 1998.

Last night’s show was “All ages.”

@cttwenty15 , thank you. I wondered why there was no uproar in the press that the daughter of the president blah blah blah. You know, the usual culprits, providing fair and balanced reporting.

I was actually more interested in the danger/security factor more than the celebrity. There is a big difference between Chris Christie’s son and Malia Obama. The threat is considerably higher and would require much more security I would think. It is that kind of detail that I am curious about. Things like parents weekends, freshman assembly, Graduations, concerts etc would be very different for the entire school and not just that one person. I am sure she would be reasonably normal during regular classes but you can’t deny that there will be a tension with all of the added security and awareness.
Woads is Wednesday night at Toads. Only Yale students with id are allowed and it is after 10pm. Under 21 pay a cover of $5 and a marking saying that they are underage. Over 21 do not have a cover. There is a similar night that is ID only and that is on Saturday or “Soads” but that is both Quinnipiac College and Yale. It is my understanding that most Yale kids go to Woads and not so much Soads. There was a concert prior to the official “Woads” night and so she was there for that. She was also allowed to stay for the Yale exclusive portion which requires you to be 18 and have a Yale ID. Perks of being who she is I suppose.

New to this thread. My son just committed to Yale for crew and is very excited. He is finishing up the Yale essay/short answer etc. is there any advice/feedback we need to hear?
The coaches told him not to stress as he passed the academic pre-read with flying colors…STILL…this mom worries…

@Memmsmom But you see, by the time if and when M Obama enrolls in whatever college, her dad will only be the POTUS for 4 months. Barbara Bush ('04) was the sitting president’s daughter almost her entire four years (starting Sep '00 – dad inaugurated Jan '01)-- while we were at war for most of it. I never recall hearing that her security detail was onerous to Yale or its students.

I’m not saying Malala Obama would have zero security after Jan 20, 2017 – but I would imagine its footprint being smaller than that for Barbara Bush.

@tonymom Congrats on your son! The program is fantastic – many of my friends were rowers.

At this point, unless he does something extremely ridiculous, all he has to do is give his best efforts to his app and short answers. Basically not insult anyone with what he writes or leave it blank

If I hadn’t read that the Bush kid was here, I would not have known the Bush kid was here.

But it has already been decided Malia will be an Eph.

^^^This was an April Fool’s article. She has not made a decision yet.

Hi Tonymom! Congratulations! he’ll love it. My son is crew too and I have found this site INCREDIBLY helpful. Everyone here is great and answers all my questions - even the dumbest ones for which I perpetually grateful.

Am I the only one who had a momentary heart attack last night when an email from YDN came in saying Homicide on Chapel Street? No other details. I immediately started looking for info and found it was from a few hours earlier, but it was the first I heard. I breathed when I saw it was a 28 or 29 yr old. Then I went to a map to see how close/far from campus it was. Then I texted my son to stay safe. Were the kids notified that a gunman was at large? I guess I’m not on the safety alert list.

First I heard of it. Hmmm. Blissfully unaware.

Sadly, you become pretty immune to to the crime reports in New Haven after your student has been there for a semester or two. And they learn (hopefully) the in-town areas to avoid, some of which are alarmingly close to campus.

My son’s friends were sitting in their off-campus house late one Saturday night last spring with the door open. Two young men just walked in and took two of their IPhones. My son ('15) lived on Crown Street for his junior and senior years; this summer they found a dead body in the building across the street from him: a homicide victim!

the recent homicide was not particularly near campus (1.5 miles from the New Haven Green).
