Yale Parents thread

Does anyone happen to have a recommendation for a nearby dermatologist (not in Yale Health as we opted out of specialty health coverage)?

my son is finishing up the Yale app and these short answers are killing me…him…Did anyone else find them and the 50 characters or less impossible…

@tonymom … A Freudian slip is when you mean one thing, and say your mother!

Did any of you have anxiety over the subject your kiddos chose for the Yale supp essay?

@Musicmom2015 the shooting was not really near campus at all- its a long road. I looked up where it happened and it was far enough away that I was not worried.

@tonymom I never read my daughters essays or answers until after she was accepted to the schools she applied to. She surprised me with a file that had everything in it so I could read them. It helped with not stressing over it because they want to hear from the kids in the kids own words and if I were to get involved it would sound entirely different. I did give some suggestions on topics and I made her promise to run it by a friend who is a teacher as well as her guidance office but I did not have any part of her actual application so it would truly be her accomplishment. As for fitting the words- I do know she had a thesaurus open so she could play with different wording of certain things to keep it within the boundaries. It became a game after a while.

@tonymom I did not know what they chose until they wrote it which allowed them to work more freely. I wanted it to be their own original idea. Senior year was my year of gradually letting go.

@shoremom22 and @Memmsmom
Thanks ladies!
I haven’t been involved in his writing of the essays more worrying from afar. I too have suggested he run it by a teacher before it is submitted.
I think reading cc posts by nervous kids isn’t helping my anxiety. Luckily my kiddo is pretty relaxed.

@tonymom The bottom line is that its just an essay. The entire application is a very complex puzzle piece that will need to fit into an even more complex puzzle. I think a lot of the kids are relaxed because they all know that it is a reach for everyone- including the ones with stellar essays. I will say that I am so happy not to be in your shoes right now. I was not as relaxed this time last year. :slight_smile:

Hi Tonysmom if your son made it past the OVs the UVs and they like him - then he has something - all he has to do is capture himself in those short words for the AO. Okay I know. What are you are saying? No short order! but when you think of all the kids that UV then OV through and then the fact that they want your son, well then he is obviously poised and articulate not to mention talented (and smart)enough to make it. My son wouldn’t have dreamed of letting me look at his essays. Good call - he knew how hyper I am. His older sister checked for typos. Trust me it’ll be great. He’ll know how to answer if he stays true to himself and talks about his passions.

@oldladyandmom thanks for the kind words. That’s just what I needed. It’s an anxious time but I need to just resign myself that it will all be ok. Just the mom in me :wink:
He’s worked hard, sacrificed much to his sport, kept up those grades and test scores…now in the last leg of the race. Must just remember part of it is the journey getting there. Excited for him and the journey ahead.

@tonymom: Your son is passed a successful OV – he’s either golden or almost there. Please step back – your family has gotten nothing but positives. That god-forsaken 50 char short takes should be banned. I think they are worthless trash – but don’t stress over it a second.

Again my anxiety not my kid’s. Have to trust I’ve raised him well and just “let it go”…oh crap…didn’t mean to conjure up Disney songs…

And don’t get worried if all of a sudden he is contacted for an interview - @T26E4 had to talk me off the ceiling for that one 2 years ago for which I was really grateful. They likely will if he hasn’t had one. Again it’s normal and nothing to worry about. If it was like ours it’s a Yale alum at a coffee shop and they just talked. - this is after the application is in.

Here’s where I asked about interviews way earlier in this thread
“Hi all Can any one tell me - do athletic recruits get interviewed off campus often?? SCEA??? Child is definitely a recruit. THe request came suddenly right after the time had started for the review by admissions. OV had happened and all that, but there was no on campus interview.any info at all welcome thanks very much”
I was told that Yale tries to interview everyone if they can and haven’t had an on campus one. I had thought that something was wrong but was assured it wasn’t.Good luck

oldladyandmom Thanks! Very helpful. Did your kid have the interview before the LL was issued or after?

@tonymom The issuance of the LL is irrespective of the interview process. We alumni are given applicant names and we start assigning them. Whom admissions choose to give LLs to are not done in coordination with us per se. They will tell us that “student X has been issued a LL for cross country” but it has nothing to do with our timing of our interview dispersals to volunteers.

Update: it’s official; my son got call from head coach that his LL is in the mail. Guess we need to purchase some swag for signing day :slight_smile:
Thanks for all the helpful feedback. I’m sure I will have many more silly questions to come.

@tonymom Congratulations!!

@tonymom congrats – but know that the Ivies don’t participate in National Signing day. FYI

Yes but his school does one for the athletes. Small beans I know but put order in for baseball cap for the day :slight_smile:
