StoneMagic–it’s really hard to predict. It all depends if the people who were accepted take the spot or not. I have known of several who got off the waitlist and several who did not–depending on the year, the instrument, and the choice of those accepted. It’s all just a waiting game–difficult I know!
I realize that this isnt a Yale only issue but this report, if even just the basic facts are true, concerns me about Yale and issues of due process:
Wait and see if he actually files a lawsuit.
^Do you think they will give him a diploma to make it go away?
@wchatar2 Sadly, cases such as this are not unique to Yale. I have seen investigative reports on incidents similar to this at many different colleges across the country. Accused students are not afforded the same rights as you would expect in a regular court of law. I have filled my son in on these cases in hopes he will be wary.
I realize that and I too have tried to discuss all of these cases with my son. I think he has become “Yale smart”-i.e. he thinks I dont have a clue. Its a difficult time to be in college.
The public comments keep focussing on prosecuting through the court system, due process, etc., but private schools can have and enforce their own codes of conduct, and expulsion is not a jail sentence. The accusations of too much secrecy don’t make sense either; Yale is required to protect the confidentiality of both students. . I might be alarmed if expulsion happened all the time, but it’s rare, so I’ve got no real reason not to trust that there’s more to this story than we’re reading in the news. That said, our family has definitely been discussing Yale’s sexual misconduct policies!
I think the big problem is that the only investigation was an internal one. If there was a third party being the law involved then there would be more that understand the complete allegations but Yale is the only one that investigated, they are the ones to hand down judgement and sentence and from the outside that looks very secretive. FERPA laws are at all schools however and its not a Yale thing. I have been told that the word around campus is that it wasn’t his first offense so that is why the expulsion. But that is only by word of mouth. It is a shame that the victims are too scared to make an official police report. That is where things need to change so that its not in the schools hands.
Note: there’s a discussion of this case over on the Parents’ Forum. That’s probably a better place to follow it. Here it will get eclipsed by more general discussions.
Graduation announcements - anybody know when/how we are supposed to order them? This web page: http://commencement.yale.edu/commencement-orders says that they will be available to order “soon.” But my daughter says that the law school graduates have theirs already (they were given to them), and we still haven’t even ordered any. Have we missed something?
For what it’s worth, we never bought any graduation announcements–I suspect that most students don’t buy them.
OK, be honest… how many have filled out their March Madness brackets having at least one win for Yale? Two? All the way? My daughter (the permanent cheerleader) has them going all the way. “Bless her heart”.
Thought I’d share this - it’s another reason to avoid the I-go-to-college-in-Connecticut too! although the suspense will be killing me tomorrow

@oldladyandmom I loved that!! Being from CT the comment about a college in CT goes one step further because its common for people we know to go to Quinnipiac and Southern so when we say New Haven, there is always that guess. She just flat out says Yale to get the shock factor over with fast. This was a cute article. I am certain that there were Yale students saying,“Ugh- Duke. We are done for” and Duke students saying,“Ugh- Yale. I wasn’t accepted there” ha ha ha.
I am so proud of how well they played. What is funny is that on the ESPN bracket challenge, they had the scores switched so those of us that were not watching the game but refreshing our brackets were thrilled and excited until someone called and relayed the truth of the game. They had a great come back and put on a great game for the fans in the end. My little cheerleader is proud of her team.
@oldladyandmom - that article is hilarious. As a 1982 graduate (and a mom of a sophomore who hates basketball), our Class’ Facebook pages and Twitter pages were blowing up. We were so excited about the win. Also, so proud of the team for keeping Duke to less than a double digit win in the second round. So they’re right, they can now go on Spring Break to Florida and then return to school next week as heroes. Boola Boola!!!
Financial aid question: my S was accepted SCEA and got an FA letter that was crazy high. Upon reviewing the CSS (using help system) I found I made many errors, especially since they were estimates. Once taxes were filed I submitted a review request, but I don’t seem to make traction getting an updated letter. It’s been a month. My son has now received two full-need (top ranked schools) packages that are similar to each other that were based on the new numbers sent in Yale review request. Big difference, $24k down to $12k. Is there anyone other than the FA office that can help get a new letter? His regional admissions officer? I want to make Bulldog Days reservations but need to make sure he can realistically attend. Yale is his top choice. Feel awful as this was my first time completing CSS and answered some key questions wrong. I’m not trying to play the system, rather get a package that reflects our financial situation. Aside from the obvious how “did I get so much wrong question”, any ideas? Thanks
@NCmom14 - I have no real information but a lot of sympathy. Did you call the FA office and talk to a human? I hear you on the “I made an error and am not trying to play the system” - I felt such guilt when my estimates were off from my final income (by about 5K) from our EA FA applications as well.
@fretfulmother : I have been speaking to folks in the FA office, but still no update. They are sympathetic but don’t seem to get the review through their process yet
@NCmom14 - Oh ouch, well that is not good. You want to be able to have real apples to apples comparisons for your son and his process. Maybe someone with more experience with Yale FA on this thread can help…?
I wonder if there is a delay right now because they are working hard to get all the FA ready for the RD decisions. Sorry, no experience with having to change FA.
