What is worse is that they are not very nice about it either. I just happened to be there with my daughter one time and there was this one taller and older gentleman that was so rude to the kids that were waiting. We were next in line and he was rude to the girl in front of us because she was asking for them to find the package that was missing. He tried to have us go next and I told him that he needed to take care of the young lady in front of us first because she was visibly upset. I came really close to saying something right there about how he was treating her (she was a smaller girl who looked on the verge of tears) but my daughter asked me not to say anything. I didn’t realize at the time that this poor service was really an issue. I wish I had said something.
A quick funny…
So I work in a resource dept at a middle school with primarily ESL students. We were discussing what study habits/skills it takes to be “successful” in college when one of my students says, “didn’t your kid just go to college?”
I answered, “yes about three weeks ago”
Student: “where was it again?”
Me: “Yale”
Student: “oh I thought it was somewhere cool like Duke”…
Quick update - got second package (refer to post 5739) without incident. Hooray!!
Yes the combination of incompetence and rudeness at the PO isn’t good . . .a live lesson for the students on how things can get when there’s only one provider of a good or service. From what I can see life at Yale is pretty special but the PO is an exception.
I’ve said it before, after first kid I learned not to trust Yale PO. got a box at the UPS store on Dixwell Ave close to bookstore and never had any problems. You just put the street address of UPS store and #xxx for the box number as if it’s an apartment. Run by nice family. It’s about $140 per calendar year for a box. You can also pay monthly.
I really don’t want to resort to an outside box cause my kid’s world is kind of centered around JE and Old Campus. The once in a blue moon she needs it, we just anticipate trouble and are happy when we get good service. Not like when I was there 30+ years ago when our only contact with the outside world was either very expensive long distance phone calls or mail (hopefully containing cash)!! A trip to Yale Station was an essential part of the day. However, back then, Yale ran it, not the USPS.
Taking leap of faith and sent another care package this time to regular USPS box. We will see if box filled with See’s Candies arrives in 7-10 days or if postal employees are in Bordeaux chocolate induced sugar coma
@tonymom I love See’s! I have a friend from Hawaii that sends them when he is in CA. I had never heard of them before. They are so good!
And the cooler weather kicks in…
Last night I went and had dinner with my daughter while waiting for my son to get off the train. It was funny to be sitting there in my light weight capris and short sleeve shirt watching kids walk around in long sleeves,Ugg boots and down vests. Now is when the reality sets in for those from warmer climates. My daughter just sent me a photo with the temp reading at 50 degrees. Might be a good time to start sending sweaters to your kids.
@Memmsmom
Spoke with son last night and asked if it was getting colder there. “Yep but I can still walk around in shorts and a Tshirt”…
I’m assuming his carefree clothing days are limited
I did share with him that the rest of us went to the beach where is was in the high 80’s…perfect Cali beach day!
@tonymom that is mean… ha ha ha. We are still warm’ish. I will admit that I put the car heater on this am on the way to work though. Last night was chilly walking back to the car but it wasn’t really bad if you don’t mind brisk air.
I FaceTimed with my daughter yesterday afternoon and noticed she was wearing a lightweight sweater. She seemed very happy to be past the “fan weather”. She showed us a view of Old Campus and the trees are still very green, but she said that she saw the beginning of fall colors on a hike at East Rock Park this weekend.
IT WORKED!!! Kid got his package of Sees Candy at USPS. Hopefully this is a trend in competency!
@Faulkner1897 - Yale in the Fall is beautiful. If your child has never experienced a New England fall, they are in for a treat!!! Spectacular!!
Im curious what you are all doing while there for Parents weekend? What kind of events are you attending? Last year we tried to do both the football game and her concert but this year they are at the same time so that isn’t happening. Besides her concert, she said that there really isn’t a whole lot going on for the weekend. Last year there was a schedule but I can’t remember where I found it (perhaps it was sent to freshman parents) and there was an exclusive tour of the Peabody museum. I thought that might be fun for my younger kids.
@Memmsmom
Head of the Hous Regatta at the Yale boathouse! Bummed I’m missing it. Go and take in the beautiful River and cheer on our BullDogs!
Many events have yet to be added to it, but the evolving schedule is here: http://familyweekend.yalecollege.yale.edu/calendar/day/2016-10-07
Anyone looking for a reservation at the Marriott Yale? They have been sold out for months, but I need to cancel my reservations for Oct 7 - Oct 9th. Yale is about a 1 min walk from there, but pricy for Family Weekend. Message me if you want to coordinate my cancellation so you can pick up the room. Thought I’d post before cancelling
So it’s approaching that time again…FA submissions. Yale website say “to be determined” for FASFA and CSS forms for continuing students. Do any of you well seasoned parents have a guess as to when they are due? Earliest submission?
@tonymom Hmm- in our case the FA was for the whole year and not just a semester. We have filed for FAFSA in Feb each year because that is the earliest that we can do our taxes. I do know that I had heard something new saying you can fill out FAFSA earlier this year but I don’t know all of the details. I suspect that it only means that you can put in a preliminary application but you cant add your tax return for obvious reasons.
