Yale Parents thread

@Memmsmom
Many thanks for advice!
Son has FA for entire school year but wanted to be prepared for upcoming cycle. I will just continue to watch FA page :slight_smile:

Actually the FAFSA is now going to be based on the prior prior year. So you will use your 2015 tax info. again. You can file now. Check the FAFSA website or the financial aid forum on here. You should just be able to use all the info. you used last year for this transition year.

“Announcements
1-800-4-FED-AID callers are currently experiencing longer than average wait times to reach an agent. We are working to reduce wait times and apologize in advance for any inconvenience.
The new 2017-2018 FAFSA is here and earlier than ever! FYI: Some states and schools have limited funds, so don’t delay! To begin your application, click Start A New FAFSA.
The 2017-2018 IRS Data Retrieval Tool (IRS DRT) is now available. If you filled out the 2016-2017 FAFSA, you will use your 2015 tax info again for the 2017-2018 FAFSA. That means you can use the IRS DRT right away!”

I think the old deadline for Yale was early April for notice in early June, not sure what the later deadline was. But it might all be changed now that they are not using the most recent year. I have a senior so I have not paid close attention to how it will work.

This website still has the 2016 dates. So you can guess they may be similar. But maybe not since you don’t have to wait for your 2016 taxes. You just need your 2015 taxes which you already have.

This says the deadline may move up due to the change to prior-prior year.

THANKS! very helpful @musicmerit

Well this sounds delightful…

Kid was just telling me how he needs to invest in some warmer sleeping gear as he"froze" waiting to get back into Vandy after flooding event…
Told him “freezing” was better alternative to having your stuff soggy…be grateful!

Those poor kids…:frowning: Hope they are doing better a few days out.

This is why I got renters insurance for my daughter - there are stories through the years of sprinklers in dorms (not just Yale) completely ruining clothes, computers, musical instruments.

It’s amazing to me that a bathroom would have an exposed sprinkler that is low enough for kids to hang clothing on??? I guess that’s what happens in a dorm that was built in 1894 and totally retrofitted.

I have a question about FAFSA… if we need to send CSS/Profile with 2016 tax information anyway, why fill out FAFSA with 2015 data?

https://www.collegeboard.org/membership/all-access/financial-aid/board-trustees-unanimously-votes-move-prior-prior-year

The CSS Profile will also use prior prior year. But they always had you estimate the following year. So you will use 2015 as actual and 2016 as estimated. Same as you did last year.

@musicmerit …Thanks!

Hey parents! After being offline for a few days, I am back with a brand new fancy left hip! That’s right, I had total hip replacement on Friday, Sept. 30. Anyone who has been following my posts may have gleaned that I have put this off for years because I did not want to be out of commission while my D was in high school. Too many mommy duties: commuting, volleyball mom, and just the everyday things that you do when you have a high powered kid. Then when she went to Yale, I said I would do it during the summer while she was home. But both summers she was out of the country. I refused to have surgery with my kid 7,000 miles away in Korea. I needed to be able to hop on a plane and get to her if needed and I was also worried that if something happened she would be so far away. Anyway, she came home for this weekend and was the last person I saw before I went in and the first when I woke up. She went back on Sunday, but I think her being here and seeing everything firsthand gave her peace of mind. She also knows I am in good hands with her dad and Uncle as nursemaids. I know many of us have bucket list items as empty nesters. Well, I just checked off one of mine!!

Wow, good for you Tperry1982! I hope your recovery is smooth and speedy.

Changing topic slightly, last year we went to the reception held by our son’s residential college master and dean. It was around 4 to 6 pm or so on Saturday late afternoon. I have not seen the reception at all on the schedule for Family Weekend. Am wondering if anyone knows…are they not being offered? Am I missing something?

if parents want something to do Parent’s Weekend, check out Yale Steppin’ Outs performance. My kid has been a participant since freshman year and is the current President. You can check them out on social media to see some past Parent Weekend performances.

College receptions are now listed on this schedule.

Thank you, now I see it!

We had a wonderful time in New Haven for family weekend! The schedule was packed with all sorts of things to do, and we enjoyed spending time with our daughter, meeting her friends, going to various events, and eating some good meals. Many parents were restocking snacks and getting items that the kids felt they needed after living on campus for 6 weeks.

I walked over to check out the construction progress on the new colleges on Friday. The exteriors are finished enough that a sense of the buildings and their impact on campus is already clear. They are architecturally beautiful, and really large. I was surprised at how they feel quite close to campus after hearing my daughter comment that they are “so far away”. I heard that the distance from Woolsey to the new colleges is about the same as it is from Woolsey to JE. When the Schwartzman Center is renovated and expanded and re-opened in 2020, I can definitely see the center of campus shifting.

What used to be on the land where the new colleges are being built? It is certainly prime real estate.

@Faulkner1897: 13 buildings, most notably an old science building called Hammond Hall and the charming and underrated Seeley Mudd Library - see here: http://downtownnewhaven.blogspot.com/2009/08/demolition-date-approaches-for-new.html. I’m sure it will be worth it, though.

That said, the true prime real estate, as you’ll have seen, is the Grove Street Cemetery, between the site of the new colleges and Commons/Woolsey Hall. Unfortunately, that’s not available - if it were, Yale might have developed very differently.

Son wants to do a summer internship or study abroad summer session. Which ones have your students done and how did they rate?

@tonymom, that’s a huge topic in its own right. A lot depends on what your son is interested in. Some internships are really competitive, and difficult even for rising juniors to get, much less a rising sophomore like your son. @Tperry1982 daughter has done extensive language studies overseas; that’s her interest. DS’s GF has done a lot of travel related to global health; that’s her interest. DS did one internship as a YYGS seminar leader, and the next year at a financial firm.

Time has not run out, but I would suggest that he look into it sooner rather than later.

@tonymom My daughter said that its difficult to do between freshman and sophomore year. She is applying now for next summer. She will be going into her junior year. She has a few ideas on what she would like to do but said that realistically she will take what she can get. She is looking into either history or language based studies. Her summer after her freshman year was filled with job shadows and other obligatory events. She said that most of her friends did the same. It might be good to have a backup plan.

@Memmsmom
Thanks for insight! It’s interesting your daughter suggests summer after frosh year not being an optimum time as son’s teammates suggested it was the best time. It may have something to do with his sport and timing…will have to ask.
@IxnayBob thanks as well! I’m assuming that study abroad is entirely different from internships abroad or domestic?..is study abroad as competitive?
And on a related note, how safe are the destinations Yale chooses for its programs? Has anyone encountered difficulties?
Just being a worried mom ;-/
My mind starts to think of those poor Cal kids who tragically lost their lives in Nice, France this summer. No way to avoid terrorist acts but I’m sure some destinations are safer than others…

@tonymom I don’t recall what your son is studying. My son is interested in science research, and last year worked in a Yale professor’s lab as part of the Freshman Summer Research Fellowship. As the name implies, this is just for freshman. The student has to find a mentor/professor and then write and submit a research proposal. If they get the fellowship, they are paid directly by Yale but work in the professor’s lab. So it’s free to the professor, which I suppose gives them incentive to mentor freshman with sometimes little experience. My son initially ruled it out, thinking he needed more experience ( he had none). He later realized that the professors often help with the proposal, and it’s not really so difficult. The other lesson he learned was to pay more attention in the fall. There were several info sessions about this program that he missed because he was too busy with other things and not tuned in yet to thinking about the summer. He ended up turning in his proposal on the due date, but it worked out for him. He learned so much and it helped him confirm that he’s on the right path. I believe there are other freshman programs abroad - I would guess they are pretty competitive, but I don’t know any details.
