Yale Parents thread

Did everyone get the email about mumps?

Yep. Luckily my child has had the vaccine but it is scary. There’s been way to much bad news coming out of the school this semester. I think we all need it to be over.

ETA: btw, I’m surprised that only 90% of students got vaccinated.

My husband had mumps last year. Aside from looking somewhat ridiculous he was fine. By the time we figured out what he had he was past being contagious. They told us that its not like it used to be because of the immunizations that most have received. Those that were not immunized at all were the ones that we were concerned about but we don’t know many in that category. None of us contracted it.

@IxnayBob I’m also surprised as I thought the MMR vaccine was on the required list for all incoming students. I guess that means that ~10% got exemptions.

Given that the latest email is about mumps and previous ones have been about those very sad deaths on campus, I’m not sure I necessarily ‘want’ to receive them… but I don’t get any emails from Yale at all, except ones telling me when there’s a bill to be paid!

Please could you let me know how to get on the mailing list?

After four years, I don’t remember how we got on the email list.

According to this website,

“Parents and guardians: only students can update your email addresses in their records, so if you are not receiving messages from campus, please talk with your daughter or son.”

Thank you @musicmerit - I’ll give that a try!

All cases were, reportedly, in vaccinated kids.

Hi everyone. Just wondering when students usually return back to Yale after winter break. The residences open on Wednesday, January 11, and it looks like registration for freshmen starts Monday, January 16. Spring term begins on Tuesday, January 17.

It is truly hard to believe that my daughter is almost half-way through her freshman year!

Dining halls don’t open till Sunday, so that may be a factor.

My D always goes back that Wednesday due to EC commitments before classes start.

If you have no ECs, travel back when it makes sense financially. It is nice to have time on campus with no studies hanging over your head.

Correction, reading comprehension fault. Dean Holloway actually said

I assume it’s roughly 90% that have been vaccinated but there’s no way to know for sure from the email. . . if there were no exceptions granted or very few, I assume he would said something more like “with very few exceptions . . .”

^ I agree. Interesting that according to the press reports, 128 of 128 Mizzou students suspected to have Mumps were vaccinated, while “over 90% of Yale students” have been vaccinated.

@Community2605 Info on the International Travel Grant program. .http://funding.yale.edu/types-funding/international-summer-award-isa

My FA student got a different grant to study abroad freshman year, but is considering this for this year as one of his summer options… He studied abroad, came home for a few weeks and found enough odd job type work to pay his expenses that fall, then got a great work study job/internship spring semester. Frugal kids can often make it work.

As a public service, I’m going to point out that Handsome Dan XVIII has an Instagram account. You will melt…

There are some great photos on that Instagram account.

I read that the new Handsome Dan will be spending his days at the athletic offices and taking walks on campus, so hopefully there will be lots of chances for students to see him.

My kid mentioned that there is a Passport event at Yale this Saturday so I ran over her things that I thought she might need to reapply. She had one but it expired when she turned 18 and I think she has to start all over again. I know with all of these questions about studying abroad, it would be worth mentioning to the parents in case they wanted to take advantage of this. I do not know if they will provide photos there however. That was not mentioned.

The Yale parents thread has slipped to the second page so I thought I would post. The SCEA decisions were posted last night, and I was thinking about what a happy day that was for my daughter last year.

One thing I did right away (last year) was book a hotel for Bulldog Days (for any new parents reading this, many parents do not come, but I thoroughly enjoyed being in the vicinity although I did not see or hear from my daughter the entire time she was on campus), freshman move-in, and family weekend.

It is hard to believe that, as this new crop comes in next year, it will be DS’s last year. Time sure flies. I don’t even want to think about graduation.
