Yale Parents thread

TutuTaxi:

There is a kind of bookshelf (hutch) constructed to sit on top of a desk. It has an extended back section that lips over the back of the desk to prevent slippage and no bottom so that the desk top remains uncovered. The lowest shelf is high enough to allow for computer or printer and other desk top items to be placed on the desk all the way through to the back of the desktop surface. These aren’t easy to find, but they are out there and quite useful in a tight space.

Bluehouse, I don’t know if the zipcars are available in the summer, but I think so. D is still around Old Campus this week and was looking into it to get some errands done. She said it does take up to four days to process your application, so if this is something someone wants to use during a move-in, fill out the application well in advance.

It’s so hard (impossible?) for people under about age 23 to rent cars. I’m sure that’s why zipcars is filling this niche. They accept people 18 and up!

Zipcars (and similar companies) are filling a lot more than just the college niche. They are increasingly ubiquitous in every city. Some of my friends who live downtown – real adults in their 40s or 50s, with real homes and incomes – have stopped owning cars and renting garage space, because companies like this meet their needs fine at much, much lower cost. They are not that common in the suburbs, except that a few suburban colleges are trying to promote it as a green/convenience matter.

Of course the cars are available during the summer! Once the company has a car, it doesn’t vanish, and it’s better for everyone if it gets a decent amount of use.

JHS, I heard Car Talk on NPR this weekend recommending Zipcars to a woman who was trying to decide about replacing her clunker. She lives in a city and uses public transportation, and only takes out-of-town trips about once a month. The math was a no-brainer. I do think their popularity around college campuses is due to the age gap the rental car agencies have created: no rentals for 18-23 year olds. The map of zipcars parked around Yale looks very promising for anyone with this need.

I’ll be investigating the zipcar. Thanks for the links.

To be blunt, I am feeling a bit overwhelmed with the logistics of the move right now. I’d like to dump it all on D but her dance card appears to be full with"other stuff" (that I’m sure is valuable). I have a sense of urgency that she doesn’t appear to share. Or maybe I would just triage differently…

Oh, well. Not the first time she and I have disagreed. And it won’t be the last. ;)

Is Bank of America the only Bank that has an ATM on campus? thanks

When I was walking with my daughter yesterday around Elm, I think I saw a Wachovia ATM, (not bank) but not sure exactly where, but near campus on Elm and Church.

I know Bank of America, Chase, and Wachovia have convenient ATMs. I found this list of New Haven banks under a Yale postdoc information site:

Banking
The banks listed below are close to campus. The best way to get information is to visit
the website or walk over in person. When going in to open a bank account, make sure
you take your Yale I.D. or postdoctoral appointment letter. When shopping around for
banks, always inquire about whether or not they offer a special discount for the Yale
community. Some banks will eliminate fees if you arrange direct deposit of your
paycheck.
Special Notes: Bank of America has a branch office and ATM machines within Yale-
New Haven Hospital and is a very convenient banking choice for postdocs working at the
School of Medicine; an ATM can also be found in the School of Management.

My son has found the Chase ATM on College very convenient.

Huh. That is good to know wjb. Of course, mine has spent all her money but if and when she gets more…I’ll link her up. ;)

This has probably been mentioned before, but there is an ATM inside Durfee’s on Elm street.

For those concerned about ATM access, I suggest opening an account with TD Bank. This is from their website:

We just got the mailing from the Yale Associated Students Agencies trying to sell us their extra-long sheet sets and other furnishings for the dorm room. The mailing reminds me of those high school portrait mailings, complete with deals that give various discounts for buying assorted packages.

I’m just checking- has anyone here used them? Are they any good?

We didn’t use them, but I think I remember someone earlier in this thread saying that the sheets were poor quality. You can probably do much better at BedBath or Target.

we didn’t use them. we brought some stuff from home and bought some at Target which had much nicer color choices than the YSA stuff.

I’ll third that - we didn’t use them because of the mention of poor quality. And better choices and prices at stores.

Agree. We used BB&B. You can make selections at your local store and BB&B will transmit your order to the New Haven location for fulfillment. I understand that actually works well. We bought the stuff here and UPS’d it to the Marriott, which stored it for us at no extra charge.

By shopping at Target, BB&B and Kohl’s, I was able to purchase everything in the ‘complete collection’ package from YSA for less than half the cost, with better quality and color choices. All places had the extra-long bedding as well as many other college-related items–all should be in stores soon I would think, as I remember purchasing them in July.

Ditto to everyone’s comments here: and don’t forget the internet–I was able to get everything in the package in brand names (Hilfiger sheets) on line and on sale.

We DID by them when D was a freshman. . .but wish we hadn’t! She didn’t like the feel of them and “new sheets” ended up on her Christmas wish list. I agree with the others. Any of the stores listed will have a much better selection and price.
