Yale Parents thread

The sheet quality is abhorrent, as is that of the mattress pad and other accessories they offer. Don’t waste your money on such cheaply manufactured products.

I concur with the sheets, much better deals out there.
My daughter is so excited, she received her roommate list today…suite of 7 and a single!!
Now it seems “real”. : )

^^^Which residential college? My son didn’t get anything in the mail today :frowning: Hopefully on Monday!

Morse…she will soon, we are close.

Congrats, Debrun! Is Morse the one that they just renovated? We’re on the east coast, so I’m guessing maybe tomorrow…

Yes, it should be done next year. This year is Durfee Hall.

For Entomom:Thought I read she was at Davenport? My son is an incoming freshman, his college is Davenport so he’ll be in Welch this year. Your daughter sounds very nice…hope he gets to meet her.

Yes tango, she’ll be a froco for Dport, so I’m sure they’ll meet sometime. She was a soph transfer, so she’s very excited to be able to have an Old Campus experience!

Well, my oldster signed her lease today at her downtown shoebox studio apartment complete with pet deposit and parking garage. Her rent is higher than my total ranch payment (PITI) but, surprisingly, I feel we did O.K… Don’t underestimate the power of lowering your expectations. It’s nowhere near as painful when you do. Thanks to those who made suggestions.

Curmudgeon, congrats to your “oldster” for her incredible find. . .hey, her very own shoebox and a furry friend to boot! Sounds like she has all the essentials:)

DD is a junior and will be living off campus for the first time. Another milestone passes. . .
She is excited to be off with her friends and I know she’ll be fine. I’ll keep repeating. . .I know she’ll be fine. . .lol

curm, Does your D’s studio apartment have an AC? If not, it is pretty hot (mainly the humidity as it is near ocean like Galveston) for a couple of months during the summer. If not, the property owner may be willing to install a portable AC unit for the summer only with some cost. (I assume here that the property belongs to Yale. Hmm…I thought the pet is usually not allowed in most Yale-owned apartments. Maybe your D’s apartment is not owned by Yale.)

It also rains more often than inland. So an umbrella is a necessity. But the rain usually does not last long. If your D lives on the north side of north frontage road, there are a lot of car traffic on that road. I always worried that DS needed to cross the York/frontage road intersection last year. (A MS student was killed by a speeding car while crossing the street there last year.)

A parking garage? DS would envy that as he has never had that. If your D decides to cook for herself sometimes (e,g., to cook healthier food than the take-out or restaurant food – DS said the food at MS may not be particularly good), she definitely needs a car, as there is no large/good grocery store (like H.E.B., Randall’s or Albertson’s) within a walking distance there.

A gripe of D1s who likes to cook and bake, particularly since the one real grocery store within walking distance closed down this year.

Indeed. D was very sad when Shaw’s closed, as she bought most of her food there and cooked for herself when she spent last summer in New Haven. It’s also a great loss for the permanent neighborhood residents, not just the students.

I know I missed it for some quick pick-ups, but also Staples closed next door to it, I don’t know why, it was busy with students and business’s. Hopefully another store will open up soon.

We have talked about the lack of a grocery store in New Haven proper. My D started googling around and found stores within 5 miles. That and the Farmer’s Markets (if they really exist) should make it doable. She cooks a lot as she is a bit of a nut about…oh, everything, but her food especially. She’s insisting on a car but…I’ll be checking the mileage and if she’s not using it, it’s coming home. (Stupidly expensive with the emphasis on stupid.)

Her building is on the shuttle line and she’s from Texas (and as such has no ability to ambulate bi-pedally.)

If it wasn’t for the social stigma and peer pressure she’d still have us pushing her in the dolphin stroller at Sea World. ;)

LOL, that is funny. She will find, having a car around New Haven, isn’t a big plus, parking is limited, lots of parking tickets, etc. but if she wants to go to Hamden or other areas of New Haven without a bus or the shuttle, it will be handy. In Hamden there is a plaza with Stop and Shop, Shop Rite, Walmart, dollar stores, and many clothing stores.
Close to Yale are expensive, but good specialty stores with fruit, vegtables, fresh ready to go food, etc. The do have farmer’s markets in various areas also.

Curmudgeon - Has she considered signing up with Zipcar instead of owning a car in New Haven? The cost is very reasonable and she can have a car just when she needs one, without all the hassle of owning one.

curm, Regarding the grocery, she may also order it online and the grocery will be delivered to the door. She may schedule the grocery delivery sometime on Saturday. It may be more expensive, but it may be cheaper than maintaining a car.

But I bet with the energy your D has, she might want to explore all over the New England and NYC very soon.

Regarding the shuttle bus route, depending on the location, sometimes it is easy/quick to take the shuttle bus to the medical school but it is not so convenient (i.e., taking too much time) to take the shuttle bus back, or the other way around. It would be ideal if both routes are short and quick, but this is not the case if, for example, she lives near York street.

Also, hopefully, her apartment is mostly for graduate students, as the undergraduate students tend to be very loud. (They just have too much fun :))

Love all this advice on off campus living for graduate students. My daughter will also start at Yale in fall in a PhD program and is looking for apartments in East Rock in the next week or two with a roommate. She also has a car (which she is driving cross country). It seemed like she really needed it for grocery shopping (she pretty much cooks all her own food). None of the places have air conditioning… not sure she realizes how different the humidity will be from living her whole life on the west coast.

Any advice for places to avoid would be welcome. She is mostly looking around Orange St.

I am new here, mother of a son in Yale class of 2014. Thanks for the info on the sheets! What can you tell me about pros and cons of renting/purchasing a dorm fridge? looks like they are $90 to rent and $130 to buy (well, small one is $130, don’t know about the size of the rentals). Things have changed since my college days (70’s) when it was a luxury! Nimsmom
