I need 20 hours driving, or more money than I can comfortably spend to see my son.
It sucks for me.
But I know that has had the best years of his life already, and he’s got a year and a half more to go!
But it still sucks for me.
Ah, the angst of moms - though the dads on here are pretty much into their kids too! Yes, I cleaned up her room that looked like a tornado hit it and laid down in her bed. The same one that she has slept in since she was 3 years old. Is it weird that the daughter I miss so much is not my adult one (who I love dearly but is doing her thing and I’m so proud of her), but the little one that I used to read to and cuddle in this room. Now I know why folk love their grandchildren so fiercely - it is their baby reincarnated. Oh well, I will continue to watch her thrive, prepare for my 35th Yale reunion in the spring (!!!) and continue to figure out my new place in the world now that I am no longer a day to day mom (by which I only mean, the mom that has to bathe, feed, clothe and transport her kid around daily). Happy second semester everyone!!
Has anyone used the Duncan Hotel which is admittedly old and over-the-hill, but it is nearby, next to the Study, and very inexpensive?
I have. I found it one of the barest, dankest, roughest places I’ve ever stayed.
LaQuinta was nicer.
But what a location!
I will avoid it in the future.
FWIW: 20 minutes outside of Yale, just off of the Merritt Parkway, is a wonderful (and affordable) hotel near Sikorsky Aircraft’s headquarters. They have free wifi, free breakfast, free parking, a pool and allow pets. Tripadvisor rates it a 4.5 out of 5 and have studio, 1 bedroom and 2 bedroom suites: http://homewoodsuites3.hilton.com/en/hotels/connecticut/homewood-suites-by-hilton-stratford-BDRCTHW/index.html
+1 for @gibby on the Homewood Suites Stratford. Stayed there for Family Weekend 2016. Compares favorably to other area hotels we’ve stayed at that have been recommended here including Hyatt Place Milford.
@T26E4 or @Tperry1982 Regarding Yale’s residential colleges… what is the make-up of the rooms themselves? Is it like dormitory hall living with communal bathrooms and double occupancy? Or are there suites with bedrooms, private baths and maybe even kitchens? Or is it a mix of these? Basically, I am trying to determine what the average Yale College freshman would be randomly assigned to…
Thanks
@WWWard for the most part the freshman are on old campus and not in their RC so depending on what RC you are assigned, the room and setup will be different. And each RC on old campus is even different so there is not going to be one answer. I suggest waiting to see where you are assigned and then look up floor plans, ask questions and start then.
ok… thanks, @Memmsmom
I believe that all Yale undergraduate housing is in the form of suites, generally arranged in “entryways,” not long halls. Typically, there will be four suites with doors opening onto each floor of the entryway, with the suites containing various numbers of bedrooms, plus a common room. Some of the bedrooms are doubles, and others are singles. In some cases, there will be a bathroom inside the suite (cleaned by the students) and others a shared bathroom on each entryway floor (cleaned by staff). The typical dorm with a long hall and a large shared bathroom doesn’t really exist at Yale.
@Hunt - I assume you are referring to freshman housing? I think most freshman residences are on the suite system you describe. But in upperclass RC housing, my son was in a suite with a common room, but the suite was on a hall with a large shared bathroom. I believe much if not all of Morse/Stiles is like this. This meant the students did not clean the bathrooms, which was a nice change from the in-suite bath freshman year! (Freshman parents: If your students don’t already have bathroom-cleaning experience, a pre-college tutorial is a good idea. They may - or may not - use this new skill…!)
@WWWard - Yale’s rooms are very different, though most on old Campus (where most freshmen live) are suites - bedrooms, and common room and either an in suite or hallway bathroom. The great thing about modern technology is that you can get virtual tours of the rooms on the Yale website or other sites like social media sites that have videos (can’t mention them by name here). Just search Yale suites and you will get a good sense of them. Whether old or new, small or more spacious, whatever room you have will become you own private slice of heaven.
Thanks, @Tperry1982
@bookmobile
I concur about bathroom cleaning 101!!!
But I was also relieved my son was in Vandy which has common bathrooms on each floor that are cleaned for them. I asked if they are decent and son reports that sometimes early Saturday or Sunday mornings (he is up early Saturday’s to row) there can be remnants of late Friday night “fun”…:-0!!!
Yikes, learning curve that hopefully runs its course by next year…
I don’t want to quibble too much, but even in Morse and Stiles the arrangement is very different from what people typically think of with respect to a dorm hall. (Here’s the floor plans for Morse: http://morse.yalecollege.yale.edu/sites/default/files/files/Morse_Plans_with_Areas_12_13%20(2)_Redacted.pdf).
What you won’t find in undergraduate housing at Yale is a long hall with 20 doubles (or forced triples) with a single large bathroom at one end and a single common lounge at the other. Of course, I think a lot of other colleges have moved away from this as well.
Any advice on CT Limo vs. Airport Shuttle for a 12:30 am trip JFK to campus? I know the costs but was wondering about reliability and safety. Ordinarily DD would take the train but international flight lands near midnight. Thanks
Anyone know if there is a centralized list of events happening campus wide? We are planning to visit our son this spring and wanted to take advantage of any fun activities (theatre, museum, open lecture etc) that may be available to the public.
There’s an app for that - search in Apple’s App Store for “Yale” (it’s the one called “Yale”, not “Yale Events”, oddly enough). Don’t know if there’s an Android version. It’s also on the website (calendar.yale.edu).
@BirdieC, We have been very happy with Go Airport Shuttle.
@trackcoach79 Thank you!
