@Faulkner1897 - the way we did it after freshman and sophomore year is that she picked the date for pickup which fit into their calendar and her final schedule. I went up the weekend before and helped her pack and to bring stuff home she wanted here for the summer. This of course works because we are only 5 hours away and my kid has so much stuff. She is a sweater and scarf fiend and I usually bring them home to clean over the summer. Way too much stuff for her to lug home on the train. She then stayed at school, finished finals and came home on the train after they were over. Lots of kids are able to pack their own stuff and have it ready for pick up. It is totally doable. Dorm Room Movers has been our best friend. They pick up and deliver as stated. When she graduates, I will be using them to ship her stuff home.
Also, she has three international roommates who often send stuff along with my D. They just reimburse us per piece but don’t have to pay the additional registration fee. This may not work for the junior to senior year summer because they do not all plan on living together next year.
Good news today!! After two summers abroad studying (and making no money), my D will be home this summer working at a Yale related job!! I am over the moon happy!!
Hello Yale parents! I received my financial aid packet today (I was accepted by a likely letter) and I’m pretty disappointed with the aid. The amount I’m expected to pay is a lot higher than what I was expecting/hoping. I think Yale accepted me because they wanted to strengthen their STEM department, but the price is a bit unrealistic for me (especially since Yale isn’t really known as a “STEM” school). Were any of you able to “bargain” with Yale to increase the amount of aid? I really appreciate your advice and time!!
Over $15000. My parents have some money saved up, which may be why the actual aid is smaller than expected, but that money is intended for their retirement.
We also found that the NPC was very close to our offer. If your parent’s savings is in retirement accounts, that shouldn’t count against your aid. If it’s regular savings, and you didn’t include it when you were doing the NPC, that could account for the difference. If it’s in retirement accounts, though, you may want to go back and be sure everything got reported in the right spot on the application forms.
If you got a STEM likely, I assume you’ve applied to other Ivies as well. If so, and Harvard or Princeton accepts you and offers you more aid, you will be in a good position to go back to the FA office and ask them to reconsider their offer (they’ll want to see the official award from the other schools.
Yale’s aid is need-based only. In our experience, only Princeton and Harvard had (marginally) better FA offers than Yale. However, you may well find that a school that offers merit aid will offer you a better package than HYP. I’d advise you to sit on your hands for a while and see what comes along.
Anyone know if it’s possible to contact Yale post office directly via email or phone?
Had a family member send my son some Sees Candies and they were worried he didn’t receive it so they had Sees check. Turns out someone named Palmer signed for it at PO. I assume this is the receiving person for parcels. My son informs me it wouldn’t be another student as you have to show ID and sign for it.
Anyone else have this problem?
@BirdieC
Thank you! Will call tomorrow! @IxnayBob I guess I was lulled into believing PO was working as all past care packages made it successfully but perhaps the allure of forbidden Sees Candies was enough to have PO turn to life of sweet crime :-0
I would not jump to theft yet. There is usually a delay between the time of delivery till the notice being placed in the mailbox. We did have one incident where the notice was placed in someone else’s box because of my handwriting being misread. That took about a week to clear up and that was a USPS Priority mail flat rate box with tracking.
You can also have him go to the PO and tell them that he knows it was there and signed for by a Palmer and could they please look for it. They wont be happy about it but we had to have a package found this way before because it was a time essential thing.
Someone asked about staying at the Duncan. It is on Chapel, 2 blocks from Old Campus, the oldest hotel in the city. It’s not in great shape, but it is clean, safe, and inexpensive in my experience. My wife and I have stayed three times visiting our son. The staff is friendly and the location cannot be beat. It’s not for everyone, though. It definitely needs paint and new furniture. You’ll pay twice as much next door at the Study or at the Omni.
@myfuture09 - as a parent who had to do an appeal of my D’s original award, please know that it is possible to appeal and have the amount reduced. Are your parents helping you since the contribution is theirs? So I don’t have to retype the details, I invite you to read some of my older posts. Trust me, if you and your parents can show why the amount is too high, you have a good chance for a reconsideration. Good luck.
I called the number that came up on the internet and they answered. I had shipped a parcel to them that was signed for by an employee named Reilly. It had been a week and the office still hadn’t located the parcel. The woman went to look for it, and my daughter likewise went to the post office as I was on the phone. It’s a hopelessly understaffed post office, no doubt one of the worst in the country. She didn’t find the parcel. It sat there for another three days. Don’t send life-saving medicine or perishables or anything that needs to be picked up when it arrives, you’re going to be out of luck. It’s now happened to us three more times, and they no longer answer the telephone. Good luck.
Unfortunately I would have to agree that the Yale PO is one of the worst in the country. For sure it’s by far the worst I have encountered. You name the mistake, they make it, with rude employees to boot. Delivery delays of at least a week are common once a package arrives at the PO, if they can find it at all.
Yale is a fantastic institution in almost all respects, but the PO is definitely an exception.
I am very surprised that someone has not accused them of stealing packages yet. Considering that if a package was to go missing from your personal mailbox at home there would be an investigation immediately because it is considered a federal crime to interfere with mail. It surprises me that nobody us done this yet. I assume it would shake up their system a bit if they did.
