Yale Parents thread

@trackcoach79
My son will also be on campus for athletics and reports one of the dining halls is open for them. No worries your athlete will be in good company! :wink:

Thanks, @music and @tonymom. I got confirmation from her coach.

I have officially joined the “abandoned mom for abroad” club… no spring break home (traveling abroad for Yale) and she was accepted yesterday to study abroad this summer. I can’t begin to say how excited I am for her but so sad too. Sigh…

@Memmsmom - you know I feel your pain since my D was in Germany then South Korea the last two summers. But I am a happy camper this year - she will be home tonight for Spring Break and has a job working for Yale this summer here at home in DC.

@Memmsmom and @Tperry1982

A ship is safe in harbor… but that’s not what a ship is for.

@ElMimino my little ship is leaving harbor at 5pm tonight on her first international excursion without me… not going to lie, nerves are prompting watery eyes. She will be fine- I’ll be fine - it will all be fine. :wink:

Just heard from a very good source that Family Weekend 2017 has had a change in dates - it will now be November 3-5.

This is reflected in the newly updated provisional calendar: http://yalecollege.yale.edu/sites/default/files/files/_FY2018%20FY2019%20FY2020%20Calendar%20Memo%20to%20AC%20Committee.pdf

@Faulkner1897 Thanks for the update. Is the date confirmed?

@Faulkner1897 I meant can I book the non-refundable hotel now?

@love2cheeses - maybe call the hotel and check that they have this date as the 2017 family weekend? Given that it is on the provisional calendar (revised March 2017), seems like it is pretty official.

For the 2016 family weekend, I stayed at the New Haven Hotel and did not have to pay in advance. Not sure if that was a fluke? The Omni requires pre-payment and the Study is already showing fully booked for November 3-5.

Others on the board have recommended hotels in Milford and other surrounding towns for better prices and more availability.

11/3-5 for family weekend? Could it be a typo? Note that for 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 family weekends are scheduled early October.

@prof2dad - I heard it from a very good source who works for Yale. I made a hotel reservation (that did not require pre-paying) and they did not seem to know about the change in dates, so the communication does not seem to be clear right now.

While I was digging around looking at calendars, found this (answers a question I had a few weeks ago about when the students need to be out of their rooms):
May 10 W Examinations end, 5:30 p.m.
Deadline for all term papers and term projects. This deadline can be extended only by a Temporary Incomplete authorized by the student’s residential college dean.
May 11 TH Residences close for underclassmen, 12 noon.

Parent Weekend 2017 is indeed November 3-5. I received confirmation of this from the development office this week, so I would definitely make your hotel reservations! : )

Also, the reason I came to this board is I was wondering if any seasoned parents have recommendations for packing/moving companies at the end of the school year. We are from the west coast, and I don’t think we will be able to get there to help with move-out. I have been extremely disappointed with the Yale Associated Student Agencies (they were terribly disorganized at move-in and we never received all the items from the package we had ordered. The things we did receive were of poor quality) – so I definitely wouldn’t want to work with them again. Are there other companies?

@bulldogmom2020 I’m in the same boat as you coming from west coast. As an added stress my son’s sport will not be over by move out day so in addition to packing, finals and move out he will also be training for a race. Just the thought of it gives me anxiety but I get the, “I got it mom…it will work out.” from him.
I’m skeptical…

Last year, I made notes whenever a Yale parent mentioned end of year storage options. The two I jotted down:

Dorm Room Movers - they send you boxes, you pack up your stuff and they will pick up and deliver at the beginning of the new school year. @Tperry1982 uses them I believe?

Allcollegestorage - I think this is the one run by Yale students.

I also read about boomerangstorage on my daughter’s residential college website.

Thanks.

I searched online for next year’s calendar and I’m still seeing parents weekend in October. Any idea when that might be updated? I made a hotel reservation for November, but a little paranoid and want to make sure I have the right date on my calendar. Thanks for the heads up on this!

Well if I search specifically for parents weekend 2017 it says November 3-5! I’m surprised it’s so late, and that if you search for the calendar you get the wrong info! But I’m thankful to whomever posted about this!

Yes, we have used Dorm Room Movers the last two summers and already have reservations for this summer (between junior and senior year) too.
