Yale Parents thread

@IxnayBob I noticed that too. When my daughter was accepted, we didn’t get her financial aid package until a few days later. We only got the preliminary numbers that first night. I wonder if that is what is happening.

@IxnayBob - it does seem to be a lot of angst this year about the FA packages. Some kids, who appear to have limited resources are complaining that the amount of parent contribution is close to 1/3 family income. I find that hard to believe and gave my usual caution about folk letting their kids do their financial aid solo since it is their finances that are being considered. The only thing my kid has done for financial aid is click “forward” and send me all the e-mails. Now that she’s a junior and it will be her “income” being taken into consideration for law school or grad school, she will have to be intimately involved in her own paperwork.

@Memmsmom - I was kind of disappointed too. I was waiting for 5:00 just like everyone else and the drip, drip of acceptance responses was very slow. I can’t wait for the ASC portal to update in a couple of days so I can see the status of my interviewees. Maybe I’ll have some excitement there.

Oh crap. Just checked the portal. None of my seven (7) interviewees got in. I am beginning to think its the public school system where I live which, based on personal observation of the kids of my friends, is not even adequately preparing our kids for the state flagship which is right up the road. The one time I agreed to do two kids outside of my area as a favor, one got in and is a rising sophomore. So it’s not that my reports are the death knell. I’m really bummed. I really had a couple of special kids this year. :((

^That’s gotta suck, but with single digit acceptances, not unexpected. Next year

There is a cc thread about quadruplets who applied to very selective schools, and got into most of them. All four were accepted at Harvard and Yale (among many other schools that one or several applied to, including Princeton, Columbia, Brown, Wharton, Cornell) and the FA offer was by far the most generous at Yale, interestingly enough.

Post 244 has up to date status (they are waiting on Stanford tonight): http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-admissions/1934926-should-quadruplet-brothers-apply-to-the-same-prestigious-universities-p17.html

I suspect that when some people on CC who don’t understand holistic admissions read that one of the quads had a 29 and another a 31 ACT, they’ll be apoplectic…

See, that is what I mean. All this talk about increased acceptance and increased aid for this years acceptance and it seems like something must be off. I do love the idea of having quadruplets in the freshman class. That would be fun. We need to invite their parents to come hang out with the cool parents.

@Memmsmom and other parents - yes, holistic admissions at work. Which school wouldn’t love to say they have the quads enrolled. So, if they meet the minimum threshold, they are going to get in. I guess kids can be made that they are not a quad and how unfair that is too. Oh well, that was four slots gone from the jump.

Furthermore, they are URMs.

I think if they were green, being a quad trumps everything as far as a hook. There are plenty of URMs who got rejection letters.

My point in posting about the quads is that they received offers of financial aid from all of the schools that they applied to, including combinations of aid and ROTC with some, and Yale had the most generous offer (by far). CC posters on the thread recommended that they appeal Harvard and Princeton’s offers and send them the Yale offer, which they have done. Apparently Harvard and Princeton have already responded that they will match Yale’s offer. Georgetown won’t match it.

Looks like two were accepted at Stanford, one was waitlisted, one rejected.

Two of the quads have been posting; one likes Yale and Princeton the best (not feeling the vibe of Harvard), the other’s top choice is Stanford. It will be interesting to find out what they decide after visiting some of the schools this month!

In New Haven right now. Sushi recommendations?

@Community2605 sorry if I’m too late. There is one that is right on chapel that is really good. It’s in the lower level of the building and next to old campus. That is where we tend to go.

Miya’s on Howe Street is good for sushi. The menu is rather eclectic and extensive with atypical ingredients. One of my personal favorites when I’m in the mood for Asian is the York Street Noodle House. They have a great large bowl of chicken Tom Ka soup.

Hi Community sorry I didn’t see this earlier but check out http://www.miyassushi.com Miya’s. We’ve always had a good time there, good food and super unique sushi. We’ve been going there since before DS started and it’s consistently been good. It’s on 68 Howe Street at Chapel Street about 3 blocks from the Yale Art gallery.

Also I see that YaleDadandgrad and I agree! :D… Okay it’s slightly weird with the invasive species stuff but you can go normal!

Thanks guys. We’re having a nice weekend with the son. Kinda crazy after seeing him over spring break, but this is our spring break and a chance to get out of town.

Talked to my area ASC chairman the other day about arranging the reception we have locally for admitted students-- we get 3 - 6 each year. We only got 1 in out of 18 applicants. He and I were pretty puzzled given the larger class admitted, and he told me we had several highly qualified applicants. Harvard accepted 2 from 1 high school in town.

Hi everyone, my D was recently admitted and will join her brother at Yale. Does anyone know if she can request to be in the same college? Thanks

From the housing questionnaire:
Incoming students may request a specific residential college if and only if a parent, sibling or grandparent lived/lives in that residential college as a Yale undergraduate. Please note that this information will be verified before the assignment is made. If you have a sibling who will be enrolled in Yale College during this upcoming school year, you may opt into or opt out of their residential college.
