Yale Parents thread

Music is one thing she loves, and it seems that if you go to Yale you give up very few of the benefits of attending a conservatory – and you get so much else!

Yes you do - in fact, all students admitted to the Yale School of Music get a full tuition award and fellowship, unless another agency is already paying. Here’s the video describing the Adams Center: http://music.yale.edu/video/adams-center-musical-arts/

Note: the Yale School of Music is a graduate program only. Undergraduates take courses in the Department of Music within Yale College (which is also excellent, but it isn’t free). Another thing music folks should be aware of is that there is no undergraduate music performance major–although there are lessons for credit and plenty of opportunities to perform.

That’s right - all undergraduates are students at Yale College, which has a single sticker price (although of course, depending on circumstances, you might pay much less than full freight). More on the Department of Music here: http://yalemusic.yale.edu/

My S is taking undergraduate music performance lesson (1 term credit each semester) with a professor at the School of Music. The Department of Music at Yale College does not have performance faculty. There is no additional cost for the performance lesson because it is taken with credit. In order to qualify for taking lesson with credit, undergraduate students need to pass an audition.

For those who do not want to take music lesson with credit or do not pass the audition, they can take lesson with a graduate student; graduate students at the School of Music are at the highest level one can find anywhere. There is a small fee for this because it is not a credit course.

By the way, the School of Music just added a new building. My S loves all those new Steinways in those new classrooms and studios. Since there are so many of them, he can get a new Steinway any time of the day and no pre-booking needed. He told us that he is spoiled.

@LadyMeowMeow My S and a few of his friends at Yale were also admitted to major conservatories. There are quite a few serious musicians at Yale. Among the 6 suite mates he has, 5 play an instrument at a high or very high level. Overall, Yale is probably the most arty school among HYPSM. There are many performance opportunities and my S just performed a solo concert a few days ago with some of his friends. They are also doing outreach into local communities and Yale provides financial support.

My S told me that one of his friends is currently structuring his study plan at Yale to closely resemble a typical study at a conservatory. I do not know how it can be done because Yale College is basically a liberal arts college. So please take this piece of information with a grain of salt. :-?

By the way, there is also a BA/MM dual degree with the School of Music: http://music.yale.edu/study/degrees-programs/ba-mm/

Cross-posting from another thread:

FWIW, I’m in New Haven today - it’s 75 degrees and sunny, the trees and daffodils are in bloom, there’s a soundstage on Old Campus where they’re doing a sound check for Spring Fling tomorrow and there are a lot of relaxed-looking students walking around, as I believe reading period began today and exams still feel far off. Very tranquil.

@DeepBlue86, if, amid the relaxed-looking students, one seemed over caffeinated, tired, and stressed, that was my DS. His work came early this year.

@DeepBlue86 I was also there yesterday for a concert. I had the same thoughts about kids being more relaxed and overall done with classes (my daughter included). I Saw the sound stage but also the amount of newly planted grass seed on the grass at Old Campus- I cant for the life of me think of a reason they would do that before today. I suspect that there will be some deeply planted grass seed by the end of the day.

For those with kids applying for FinAid at Yale who were scrambling for tax transcripts or nonfiling verification letters, just noticed this update on the continuing students page: http://finaid.yale.edu/applying-aid/continuing-students “For 2017–2018 aid applications ONLY, the federal government has waived the requirement for U.S. citizens and permanent residents to submit IRS Data Retrieval, an IRS Tax Return Transcript, or a Verification of Nonfiling Letter. Due to technical difficulties with the IRS Data Retrieval Tool this year, signed copies of tax returns and tax nonfiling statements will be used for federal aid verification. If additional documents are required for federal verification, a financial aid officer will contact you.”

@tdy123 so if our student didn’t file in 2015 all we need is that form Yale provides on its FA website? No need to get official one from IRS?
This has all been so scattered this year! I blame Russian hackers!

@tonymom Certainly seems like the old non-filing form is all you need, and they did write that if they need anything else, “a financial aid officer will contact you.” As to the Russian hackers, you seem to be on to something - even if the comment was made in jest. Spoke to a friend who is a fin aid officer (not Yale) and his theory was that the problems this year were a result of the perfect storm created by the changes in FAFSA (both tax year required and filing dates - bureaucracies don’t handle change well); the changes in the Federal Gov’t/Education Department/IRS administrators; and the hacking of the IRS DRT which just brought the whole thing crashing down.

Just saw the quads big reveal on the Today show! They are all going to Yale! They said that Bulldog Days was where they decided. Great choice(s)!!!

Wonder if they are going to ask to be placed in the same residential college? Son said Bulldog Days made his choice a total no-brainer, despite the rain.

It just popped up on our local news today too. How exciting! Makes me so happy that of all of their choices they chose the same one my own kid loves so much.

It sounds like they each want their own identity so it would probably be better to place them each in different colleges.

Here is the article. They just sound like such great guys.

Another piece of good news

Saw the article about the quads too! I knew three were leaning Yale, but it’s exciting that they are all coming. From the article I read, I’d guess they ask for four different colleges. There were a few other stories of kids that got into all 8 ivies, but I haven’t heard where they decided to go.

With the quads, three were always leaning toward Yale. One got into Stanford and he held out to the end but eventually made the right choice!! They have such varied interests, Yale will be a great place for them to find their individuality. I also hear they got a great FA package. I know the triplets that went to UPENN, just the thought of what the bill looks like (even if the parents are not paying full freight) is astounding. Good luck to them all.
