Yale Parents thread

Anyone headed to New Haven next week?

Lol. I was there last night to drop off a turbo coffee (also had to drop off oldest at train station for a job interview in NYC) and I will be there again Sunday to pick up round one of suitcases while picking up the train traveler. We officially move her out on Wed I believe.

I will be there on Tuesday to help my son move out. Hard to believe he’s finished two years already!

My daughter’s exam/paper schedule ended up being more spread out than she originally thought, so I decided not to go up and help her move out. I hired the movers that @Tperry1982 has used - they pretty much come and take everything away, store it for the summer, and deliver to the new room in August. I decided that it is cheaper and easier to do it this way versus spending the money on a plane fare, hotel, and car. Let’s hope it all works out!

I’m driving out from St. Louis! I know that I could hire movers, or let my son handle it on his own, and he has done before, but my reasoning is subtle… I’ll have two days driving back where I’ll learn more about his year than I could have ever learned from email, phone calls or texts.

Not going till grad weekend. Cannot believe it has been four years!

May I ask a question of the helpful parents on this Yale thread? Read no further you have knowledge of the Yale Student Health plan.

Am I correct in thinking that the plan available for students to purchase does not provide coverage outside of New Haven other than emergency care and a very limited number of pre-approved services? If a student becomes ill while home during the summer or working elsewhere in the country, all care is completely out of pocket? Is this true or am I misinterpreting the summary of coverage?

My older son is covered under the Student Health Plan at his school, but it offers three different levels of coverage: in-network in immediate service area, in-network out of immediate service area, and out-of-network. The annual premium is only slightly higher than the Yale plan, so I was surprised that the Yale plan did not seem to cover any services outside of New Haven.

@CT1417 plan details are here http://yalehealth.yale.edu/understand-your-coverage You thinking is basically correct.

Thanks @tdy123. Most unfortunate as I was hoping to enroll my son is this. Perhaps I should just be grateful that older son’s coverage is more extensive. Thanks for your quick response.

@CT1417 (I’m not just writing this for you, but for any parents of freshman contemplating the choice)The choices aren’t all that clear cut. A lot depends on your choices in coverage from your home state, as many plans offered these days have limited networks that don’t provide much or any out of network coverage. Also, a child specific thing to consider is whether the child has any chronic health conditions and whether the child will be playing sports at Yale. Parent’s who’s answer is yes to either or both of the child specific questions sometimes end up doubling up and shelling out for two health plans to make sure everything is covered.

@tdy123 --very valid points, and I can see how this coverage could be useful for an athlete or a student with ongoing medical needs. If the student’s primary home coverage had a hefty out-of-network deductible, the Yale Student Health Plan would probably save money for the family. Not the case for my son…but helpful to illustrate another scenario.

We had considered this for my daughter as she does live in CT. But we are an hour away so to run there when she needed to would not just be a pain but not convenient at all. It was not cheaper than her regular ins and we were not paying for two. She stuck with what she had and we called it a day. Every student is covered with basic care anyhow- if she needed a specialist, I would want her home to go to those in our area that we trust anyhow.

Anyone ever rent a storage space? My son and some teammates are looking to get a small space as the amount the RC allows is too small. Found a place in west haven. Am I going down the wrong path? I can’t move him as his sport isn’t done yet so left with few options…

@tonymom, I sent you a PM

I drive up tomorrow to finish helping my baby pack because she has papers left to write - the life of a Literature major… Dorm Room Movers come on Tuesday afternoon to whisk her stuff away and will deliver it like clockwork in August. Best deal ever. I am so glad to have her home for most of the summer. Those that follow my posts know she has been out of the country the last two summers. Well, she just committed to studying again in Germany for the month of August, thanks to some not so gentle prodding from her German teacher who gave her a full fellowship to study in Heidelberg. So, I’ll have her most of the summer. So hard to believe that junior year is a wrap. I have been on this site with some of you since her high school years and through the application and freshman year highs and lows. I feel like I know a lot of you. Congrats to the parents of seniors!!! For us 2018 parents, can you believe this time next year we will be getting ready to go to graduation??? I hope to meet a lot of you there. We need to go out for a drink or something. We deserve it

@Tperry1982
Thank you for all your words of wisdom! You have been ever helpful! Enjoy your summer with your daughter :slight_smile:

@tonymom - Hello! I rented a storage unit in West Haven for my DD. She’s sharing it with two of her teammates. I’m actually heading out there tomorrow after work (on a red-eye flight out of SFO) to help her move out of old campus Tues morning. The storage unit is a climate controlled unit which I think will help keep their belongings intact. I locked in a rate of $94/mo for a 10x10 unit. PM me if you need the info of the place.

I considered letting my DD move out of old campus by herself, but decided to head out there to help her (she just finished freshman year). Since I’m flying out there without hubby, my DD and I decided to make it a fun mother/daughter bonding, catch-up and “debriefing” time, including a quick trip to NY for a Broadway show (Dear Evan Hansen). I’m super excited to fly back home (CA Bay Area) with her and have her here for most of the Summer!

In August, she’ll be moving into one of the new colleges and I’m excited to check that out. I’ve seen pictures of her new suite (she gets to have her own room in a suite of five singles) and it’s beautiful! :slight_smile:

I remember getting on this site around recruiting time and before move-in day with so many questions and feeling comforted by the information provided by all the wonderful parents on this thread, I just wanted to say THANK YOU to all of you who shed a light through the journey this first year! I can’t believe my DD is officially done with freshman year (she texted me that she finished coding her final computer science project) and she’s over the moon excited to get her summer started! : )

I stopped by last night after getting my son from the train station to see if she had anything packed for me to bring back. Her room is a nightmare, she hasn’t packed ANYTHING and she was an emotionally stressed mess. I bought her a container of drunken noodles from Basil and her favorite doughnut from Donut Crazy and left her alone. She is done after her Organic Chemistry exam tonight but I think Ill surprise her with some of her friends from home to move her out on Wed so she can take her time decompressing and packing over the next two days. I think she has had enough of what she calls the Sophomore Slump…

@Memmsmom, during DS’s first two years, not only would he not be packed, but usually I’d have to ask someone to let me in the dorm and wake him up. I don’t know if it’s the influence of his GF, or him “adulting,” but this year he’s been much better. The stress during finals hasn’t changed.

I was pleased to get some packing related texts from my daughter this morning. She is finished with her two big exams, but is not quite done with a few papers. However, she now has some breathing room to start the packing. She reports that UPS has been stationed at Phelps Gate over the past few days - that’s very helpful and smart thinking on the part of UPS!
