Yale Parents thread

DS lives off campus but in old storied tradition house of his team. The lease has been with the team for decades renewed annually. It’s in the Yale bubble only blocks from his classes. There’s stuff in that house from days of yore. It ends up as the default house for all the more junior members of the team to hang with the seniors mentoring them. If he’d said he wanted to move into just an apartmnet with a couple of friends that would have given me pause but not this.

Did my child not call me last night for money for a plane ticket to South Korea for spring break?? Not the beach, or Florida, but Korea.l Again. On a side note, how is it cheaper for her to fly to Seoul than for me to fly from MD to Cancun? Go figure.

A quick question for those who have been efficient and filled in their CSS profile for their ‘continuing student’ already!

Am I right in thinking it’s all changed this year? It’s always a challenge to fill in as an ‘international’ but I’m sure there was the option to download a worksheet with all the help points on it in previous years so we could work out which information should go into which box. Now I don’t seem to be able to do this.

Any help gratefully received!

You are not the only one missing the worksheet. My D graduated so I am not doing it this year. But I just saw this other thread. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/financial-aid-scholarships/2048627-css-profile-2018-2019-issues.html

So it’s not just me then! Thanks for the link.

Okay - Where is the best Sunday brunch near campus? Family is going up to celebrate DD’s b-day, and as a freshman, we don’t know everything in the area yet. Thanks!

Top of the Omni called John Davenport’s - be sure to reserve. It’s buffet style. It’s great for occasions of state, but it’s expensive. were you hoping for a casual I have more casual choices too if needed. Also tell them it’s a birthday and you would be grateful for a good Yale view.

@kbgb There’s so many options it’s just a matter of what type of food you want. Not sure of the street name but literally two blocks away you can find plenty to chose from. I remember my sons second year for his birthday which is actually tomorrow I ordered his favorite meal from his favorite restaurant and the owner herself made the surprise visit even song HBD and through a cake in also.

I really like Heirloom, which is in the Study Hotel (on Chapel). It has a brunch menu, and is a sit down (non buffet) brunch. Great food. You can make reservations on Open Table. Brunch menu is online.

For something a little more casual but really good, my newest discovery is Maison Mathis. It’s a casual Belgian cafe with coffee and juice bar. It’s on Elm Street, right near Davenport and Pierson, across from the Apple Store. We had breakfast there during family weekend and decided that is where we are going to go for breakfast from now on.

Thanks everyone… don’t mind casual, but hoping for upscale casual since it’s for her birthday

Must be serendipity! I was just going to post a question about fun/yummy/unusual services/deliveries for my son’s upcoming bday. Last year I called a bakery and ordered a cake. The bakery mixed up part of the order and it was a bit of a hassle. We are west coast so arrangements need to be made remotely…
@YaleNHarvardDad what was the name of the eatery that did such a great job?

You might check out Roia (http://roiarestaurant.com/wp-content/uploads/2018-01-16-Brunch.pdf).

@tonymom The restaurants name is Sandra’s the food is great , not really walking distance for me but my son really loved the food and the service so I went on a whim and called and somehow spoke with the owner and she did a wonderful job. Your message was right on time as my son happened to be on the phone with my wife discussing his birthday tomorrow. I believe she has a website also.

It must be birthday season! I’m hoping to have a cake or cookies delivered. Any recommendations??

@tonymom you know someone on campus who would gladly deliver a cake’o’gram. Lol. Just ask her.

@Memmsmom and a singing cake gram at that!

Hi Everyone,
I have been quietly reading this “long” thread and hoping that one day, I will get to joint the rank of Yale Parents.

DS - Class 2022
Thank you all for your valuable insights thus far.

@tonymom Do you even have to ask? Of course!

I haven’t been here in a loooooonng time! But as we are heading into February and graduation is May, I need to start planning. Question to the wonderful parents here, do residences stay open after the last exam till graduation weekend?

@Saona63 My Son moves out immediately after receiving his degrees from his residential college.
