Yale Parents thread

Yes, the residences stay open the whole time. We had to clear everything out by Tuesday at noon. Some move out Monday after the residential college ceremony and meal.

Move out by noon on the 22nd for seniors.

Be prepared, many students leave campus during that “dead week” for a trip with friends to Myrtle Beach, Cancun, etc.

Thank you. I mean there’s a gap between end of exams to graduation of about 2 weeks. But i just checked the schedule and seniors move out May 22! Give them time to finish and clean out their rooms, seem whatever he can, pack his clothes and go into adult life lol

HI,
Quick question regarding airport transportation from BDL. Coming from LAX, American Airline has one nonstop flight to BDL. But it lands at 11:48pm. CTlimo’s website states services from 8am to 11pm. Is Uber our only option (when DS is traveling alone)? I will be traveling with him on move-in days so we will be renting a car.

Thanks for all the great advices and really excited to be part of the new family :stuck_out_tongue:

My daughter always flies in and out of BDL, and she now takes uber to and from BDL after some frustrating CT Limo experiences. One time we booked a car service for her (Hy Limos, but it was a car) in a unusual situation because we weren’t sure how reliable it would be to get an uber, but it was expensive.

One other thing to know, your DS might do a pre-orientation trip and arrive a few days before you in August. My daughter did the 6 day FOOT (first-year outdoor orientation trip) and arrived in CT with just her hiking stuff, and we flew into BDL and met her in New Haven on move in day (we are not driving distance either). There are other pre-orientation options. Right now, I think they are all optional, but I read somewhere that in the future they may be required (but probably not for 2022).

My D has taken bus to Hartford (Civic center?) then transferred to airport bus. Cheap but a little unwieldy and definitely wouldn’t try late at night - if they even run then. She has car so she uses Hartford when weather ok to drive or when a friend can run her up there. She has now gotten the hang of Metro North to NYC and bus to LGA and that’s usually cheaper. But even there I’m not a fan of doing it late night. The Go shuttle (which sadly doesn’t go to Hartford) is very good and she uses it to get back to Yale when late at night or has checked bag (long breaks) since it is door to door.

@scmom12 – I am intrigued to read that your D has a car. Where does she park it? Does she have a need for it during the school year?

@Faulkner1897 Our kid also flies only into BDL & has been using CT Limo. Are there any particular “frustrating experiences” we should know about? And if you don’t mind saying, how much is an uber from BDL to New Haven? Is it a lot more than CT limo?

@Faulkner1897 and @scmom12, thanks for the info. DS is still tackling his Fall Semester finals this coming week and have not put much thoughts into the orientation programs yet.

The rest of my message disappeared

@CT1417 My D is a graduate MAR student at YDS and is in one of the Sterling Quad apartments and they have parking there. She doesn’t need a car around campus - she walks and uses Yale shuttles to get around but she drives up at beginning of year and back in spring. She also does some activities off campus. As long as she is up there, she wanted to be able to get out and do her own thing. And being able to get to Chick Fil A every now and then makes her feel at home.

@scmom12 --Oh that makes much more sense! My son is a freshman and I couldn’t imagine him needing a car, but if he really did, home is an hour or so away on the Metro North.

@LadyMeowMeow
I asked my daughter (who really likes efficiency and organization) and she said CT Limo was always late, and the wait time at the airport was often hours. She thought that they were very disorganized and often had the wrong size vehicle for the number of people they were supposed to drive. She didn’t like that the drivers would write down confirmation numbers while they were driving. She used CT Limo her entire freshman year when she was in Old Campus, but now that she is in her residential college, it’s just easier to catch an Uber at her college versus getting herself and her luggage to and from Phelps Gate.

She tried out Uber in the fall, and I think she found it to be so easy and efficient that she never looked back. Uber costs about $70, Ct Limo is $44. So there definitely is a cost difference. Overall, we have found that our daughter spends far less than we anticipated at Yale (virtually nothing) since she eats in the dining hall most (if not all) meals, so we are ok with the cost differential.

These are completely first world problems, yes!

@Faulkner1897 Thank you for such a detailed response. Our efficient & thrifty kids sound very similar. Ours is still on old campus.

My son also uses Uber from Hartford and has found it much more convenient. I believe there is some public board or FB page where students can see if they can share a ride to and from campus/airport.
As I’ve mentioned before, also look at Tweed for flights. It isn’t always more expensive and if you figure in Uber costs from Hartford it may actually be cheaper!

We’ve used Tweed occasionally. This Christmas it was the best option because D caught a ride to airport and then came into home town (stop in Philly). When you factor in cost of Metro North/bus to LGA or Go Shuttle (or however you get to final destination at each end) into your flight, it can be best deal.

Tweed looks like a great option - thank you both.

Any brilliant ideas for tracking down a missing shipment? My son’s closest friend was home in Portugal over break. The student left a backpack with laptop there while traveling. Dad shipped it to the kid’s freshman dorm. Student is a senior. They’ve been running around campus all day trying to see where it ended up. Lots of advice. No backpack. Someone in Yale’s shipping department (not sure exactly which dept) showed them a signature for the package. They don’t know if that simply means it arrived somewhere on campus or someone signed for it and took it. I suggested getting some administrative assistance from their department (math). The kid’s US sim card is also in the backpack, so no cell phone usage other than wifi. I feel badly. Enough stress waiting to find out about graduate school acceptances and finishing off senior year!

What was the carrier used? Was the package actually mailed to dorm (not the kid’s PO Box or the shipping center for Yale?). If USPS, call the 1-800 number and file a report. I mailed a prescription to my daughter’s PO last year, and it was lost for over a week until I filed a report, then they found it.

No real help now, but for others reading, I have found that the best way to ship something valuable to my student is to ship to the FedEx location on Whitney Avenue (near TD) and indicate that the item should be held at the FedEx location. FedEx sends an email when the item arrives and will only release with a photo id and signature.

I’ll give them that info/questions. Thanks! I ship all of my son’s stuff to his department and they hold it for him. He’s a graduate student, and I couldn’t see any better way. Dorm is so close to the department building (it is possible to ship to the dorm, but it’s not secure at all). Crazy that it’s so hard! This kid is pretty upset right now about the mistake. I don’t have some of the fine details, since the friend was in class when my kid texted for help.

Somewhat random request…
We will be visiting our son and watching his sport event in Boston and taking in some sights. Anything that is a “must” for us to see? We have a few days in the area and a car.
