Yale Parents thread

I think despite political differences most can agree that HRC is extremely accomplished and has demonstrated how a education at Yale can provide any individual with drive, intelligence and passion a vehicle for making a difference in the world. I’m sure those who attend and keep an open mind will find her words useful.

Full disclosure - for what it’s worth, I worked on Hillary’s campaign as a volunteer coordinator. I am sure that her speech will be one that the students and their guests will remember. If nothing else, I am sure Class Day will get a lot of press so I hope the enjoyment of my D’s big day is not overshadowed by it.

I’m not a fan but have a grad student so I don’t think class day applies. Biggest problem when undergrad school had these kind of speakers it was a hassle with additional security and suddenly needing to make events ticketed. So I also hope she doesn’t detract from students’ day but assume yale has speakers like this frequently and has it down. At least we already have hotels booked.

My daughter’s graduation was 2015 and Joe Biden was the class day speaker. So tons of security which was very hard with a disabled grandparent (great speech though). I don’t know if there will be as much security for HRC but perhaps there will. (Metal detectors, very long lines to get in, etc.)

D was undergrad trying to get home that morning Joe Biden was there. The shuttles were not running any where near campus so that was one of a handful of times she walked to the train station.

Dumb question - what a class day speaker? is that the commencement speaker?

Dear wise bulldog parents, hope you can offer some insight.
My son who is a junior has been thinking to switch from BS major in Math to BA in Math due to several reasons. Do you know if it really matters in terms of future employment or grad school opportunities? He currently does not have a definite plan for future yet. In fact, he is quite upset and frustrated (about this uncertainty) now.
Appreciate if you can share your experience and thoughts.

Yes @oldladyandmom. Here is the website with details. As my D informed me, Baccalaureate is formal with traditional cap and gown and many pose for pics afterward.

For class day on Sunday they all wear unique headgear with their gowns. This is where the featured speaker will be.

Then on Monday degrees are conferred. After a large gathering there are smaller gatherings in the residential colleges where diplomas are received and then lunch is available in each college.

Thanks @musicmerit! That website overwhelms me I want to go to so MANY THINGS!!! And being Canadian we always got seriously confused with graduation terminology in the US. Here in Canada we usually refer to it either as convocation and or graduation but never as commencement. Took me a while to get used to “commencement” and not confusing that with the start of something at college - but, sniff, it actually is - it’s the start of real life! Can’t believe it!where did the 4 years go!

@donnaleighg I was at the 2015 graduation also, and the security was extremely overwhelming, we had to go through a checkpoint just to get into the outdoor event

@buttercreamlilac , my older son got his BA in math from Cornell. I don’t think they had the option of a BS. He’s at Yale now for his PhD in pure math (and still not sure what he’s going to do next). Younger son is a current junior at Rutgers getting either a BA or BS with majors in math and CS. He’s also not sure what’s next. I don’t think it matters whether it’s a BA or BS. He should try to explore options and see what appeals to him. Good luck!!

@NJCornellMom , Thank you so much for sharing your experience and advice!!!

Just received info about the Yale Ring order. Curious if anyone has ordered one and what’s the quality like?..

So excited for all the new Yale parents!!! Welcome! Boola boola baby bulldogs!

Love the Baby Bulldog title @Memmsmom.

Did you see the cute photo of Handsome Dan wearing the Class of 2022 sign?

Hi all! New likely Yale mom here! My son just got his admissions letter on Ivy Day and we are SUPER excited!!! He hasn’t made an official decision yet because he wants to give serious consideration to all the amazing schools that have accepted him. But truth be told, in his heart, there is no contest! I will no doubt be on here ALL the time for support and advice  This is our first child going to college!

Congratulations @moosiechica88 ! This board was so helpful to me after my daughter was accepted to Yale. My one tip is to make hotel reservations for move in weekend and/or Familt weekend as soon as you make a decision. There are some good options in New Haven that are very convenient, but they tend to be a bit more expensive on busy weekends. There are also good hotel options 15 minutes away in neighboring towns.

Exciting times!

@ct1417 my daughter was just selected to be a Froco for next year and she is all about her incoming baby bulldogs. I think it is so appropriate. I tried to remind her that yesterday was Ivy Day and she said that the whole campus was aware. I think that says a lot about the school when the students that are there are just as excited for the new class of incoming students.

@Faulkner1897 Thanks!!! We are SUPER SUPER SUPER excited!!! Thanks for the tip! I actually have a cousin not too far from Yale, in Fairfield. Do you think it would be realistic to just stay with him? I know it’s not down the street, but would there be a reason staying 45 minutes away would not work?

@moosiechica88 I am actually from CT so if you have any local to CT questions feel free to ask. Yes you can easily stay in Fairfield. Its about a 25 min drive depending on traffic. The issue will sometimes be Traffic coming into New Haven and then parking but you can easily take a train from the area into New Haven so you wont have to deal with any of that. Metro North runs all day and is easy on and off. You can definitely find parking somewhere in New Haven but if you don’t know the area it may seem frustrating. It took me a good year to figure that all out.
