Yale Parents thread

@moosiechica88 - my D just graduated from JE this year and I graduated in 1982. JE is the oldest and smallest residential college. Farnum is a great place to live freshman year, the suites are decent - some better than others. She will love it there, but to be honest, the vast majority of Yalies fall in love with the college they are assigned to since most have no prior attachment to one. Congratulations!!

Wow, I’ve been gone for a minute and have come back with a new title! Graduation weekend was great! I finally got the monkey off my back from the rainy, cold graduation I experienced 36 years ago. Graduation weekend was a happy, family affair and graduation day was simply spectacular. After a celebratory cruise and then 5 days in Houston for our sorority national convention, we are now home getting her ready for her next adventure at the London School of Economics and Policy. Financing her Yale education was so much easier and we now have an appreciation for international students. Visa applications, money exchanges, and finding an apartment long distance is no fun. If any CC parent has the hook up in London for an apartment for 3 Yale students, let me know.
I am looking forward to my new role as Champion and am available to answer any questions you may have - or point you to one of the other regulars who will have the information.

@HappyMom18
My daughter feels similarly to your daughter. Loves Yale, has many good friends, but she has commented that it does not seem like a lot of the Yale men are really that focused on or interested in dating. I read a story in the YDN about a group that started a speed dating event - https://yaledailynews.com/blog/2018/04/15/speed-dating-event-draws-45-to-evans-hall/. There were three men for every woman! So there are definitely guys out there who are interested in dating. I can see how this might be seen as a bit of an embarrassing thing to attend, but I think it is a great idea.

There are some colleges (not Yale, to the best of my knowledge) that have events like “dinner for eight” or “dinner with 12 strangers” where students get together for dinner (can be in dining hall or at a restaurant ) and meet new people. These are organized student groups that plan the events and match the dinner group, so someone would need to organize this, but it seems like such a brilliant way to meet new people.

Any Mystic area hotel suggestions? We’ve (translate mom  has always wanted to see Mystic Seaport but I think we will get there before move-in. I thought staying there would be nice but not sure where…

Hey all- via their move-in instructions, Yale is pushing outside-sourced personal property insurance in case of theft. I’d normally ignore, but since it’s coming from Yale I wanted to see if anyone else had utilized it or ever had to make a claim for stolen items. Thanks!

Never got it. Never had anything stolen. Class of 2017.

Never got it, Never had anything stolen (well other than a bike at her East Rock apartment one summer, but I doubt that would have been covered). Class of 2015.

We have used the same insurance company for each of two kids. One had enough claims that they wouldn’t let him renew the following year (although they paid in full, even for a MacBook) and the other never filed a claim.

Decide which your child is most like. They are probably in between, in which case I’d take the insurance. It’s inexpensive, iPhones and MacBooks aren’t.

Got it - this ensured we would wouldn’t need it of course! it was cheap

We haven’t used it, class of 2019. No problems with theft. Back in the day, my off campus apartment at another school was robbed and my parents homeowners insurance paid the claim. Something to check, no idea if that would work.

For reasons that I cannot explain, I decided to purchase dorm/renter’s insurance this past year for my freshman at Yale and senior elsewhere. Older son attended college for three years w/o renter’s insurance.

Neither lost or broke anything; I didn’t really anticipate theft. My HO deductible is too high to be of use.

I have heard that the coverage is excellent, even for old items, so hold onto your receipts if you think a bike, phone or computer may need to be replaced.

Last year over winter break, some pipes at Morse burst and many kids had items that were damaged or destroyed by the water. The kids who had renters insurance were covered, Yale was not responsible for the damage. After that happened the heads of college strongly encouraged the kids from Morse and Stiles to get insurance if they didn’t already have it. My daughter’s first year there was an issue in one of the Old Campus buildings with water too. I can’t remember if it was a sprinkler system issue or a shower on a higher floor that flooded. So insurance is not just for theft.

I don’t recall precisely, but I think the annual premium is around $130. I don’t get the liability insurance, because that’s covered by our Homeowner Policy.

We never had anything stolen, but a MacBook suffered water damage, and was a complete loss.

We can afford to “self insure,” but in my opinion, the insurance is good value. We still have homeowners insurance, even though (knock wood) we have never had a fire, or burglary, or lawsuit from a trip and fall.

Thank you all for the replies regarding insurance-- much appreciated! Just FYI, $95 annual premium, according to the brochure Yale sent, covers $4K worth of loss with a $50 deductible. They also offer coverage up to $20K (not sure why anyone would need that). Thanks again for responses.

I’m so happy to have found this page; I’ve been frantically searching Facebook for months, looking for Yale parents, and all this time you’ve been right here on CC!

I’ve been binge reading all 464 pages, and have found the advice incredibly helpful and the community of parents wonderfully supportive. What a great resource!!

My daughter is an incoming freshman in Pauli Murray so she’ll be moving into her college straight off.
I’m wondering if there are any PauliMur parents here who might have insights into room size and furniture. I realize it varies, but any info or advice would be much appreciated!

Looking forward to spending the next four years with all of you!

She will be in a double sharing a common room with another double. My next question is if the 4 suite mates rented a micro fridge can they placed them in the common room?

I will really appreciate any info you can give me since there is a new residential college, there isn’t a lot of help or info in the web.
Thanks in advance!

@BPGiTo - Welcome to the Pau"LI MUR"ray family! My daughter is a lemur and absolutely loves her residential college! She’s one of the first to occupy the new dorms last year and had access to the different floor plans for every dorm on each floor (she was lucky to be able to pick her suite last year and I must say… you can’t go wrong with any! They’re all beautiful and spacious). If you PM me your email address, I’d be happy to forward you the floor plan document. You’ll be able to easily identify your daughter’s suite by floor and suite number and it’ll give you a good idea of what it looks like. Re the micro/fridge, it can be placed anywhere they agree to place it in their suite. But the common room makes it more accessible for all four of them.

OMG @SoftballFan Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! You are absolutely a life saver!!!
I would love to see the floor plan, unfortunately, for some reason, it won’t allow me to PM you since I am a new member and don’t have the required 15 post.
Is there is a way that you can message me through this forum?
I have some more questions that I would like to ask you like underbed storage, closet/armoire/wardrobe, dresser, etc.
Sorry, I don’t want to bother or overwhelm you with my questions. I am so relieved to find this helpful forum.

Thanks again for your candid and warm welcome. My D can’t wait, we are very excited and really looking forward to it.

@BPGiTo - Just sent you a PM.

@BOGiTO i just wanted to say enjoy the next four years! It goes sooo fast. I have two sons at Yale and the rising senior is both so happy and so sad to be returning for his final year. He knows that this is the last year for him and is dreading the loss! No joke. My rising sophomore is counting the days to move in day where he is happily awaiting meeting and moving the new first years into his college. I have never seen a college create and extend this kind of family feel to all the students on its campus! It really is a spectacular place. Welcome to the family!
