Yale Parents thread

I just called CT Limo and got the following information: They do have service to Bradley (Hartford) airport from New Haven. The shuttles run every 2 hrs, the first shuttle leaves at 4.00 a.m. and the last shuttle from New Haven leaves at 4.00 p.m. The last shuttle from Bradley airport to New Haven leaves at 11.00 p.m.

My daughter has always flown in and out of Hartford and used CT limousine. She reserves on-line in advance. I think there is a discount maybe for doing it ahead of time? She hasn’t had any problems at all with the shuttle service. One time her flight was late arriving, so she took a later shuttle than the one she’d reserved, but it was not a problem.

Re. summer storage each suite is allowed to store one sofa, one rolled-up rug, one tall lamp, one chair per person I think. Plus, each students is allowed 6 boxes. You can check out the policies here [Council of Masters | Policies](<a href=“Welcome | Council of the Heads of College”>Welcome | Council of the Heads of College). It looks like that is true for any college. My daughter was able to store everything last summer without paying for additional storage. She did go to a mailing type business near campus to purchase some good boxes. She flies Southwest, so she could bring home 2 suitcases without charge.

Yes, this is our 5th year of using CT Limo out of Hartford without a problem. So, I hope the service continues. There is a Yale discount as well as an additional discount for booking online I believe.

Regarding storage, boxes are also available at the Yale Bookstore. At the end of the summer they can be folded up and re-used the following year usually if you want. We’ve never had to use additional storage outside of the residential college. However, my S was able to store some additional boxes under a suitemate’s name because the suitemate lived close enough to take much of his stuff home instead of storing it at Yale. So, check around to see if anyone is not going to use their allotted number of boxes.

Thanks so much for all the storage info! I’ll talk with him over break and have him look into storage on campus. That would work SO much better than off campus! Still have to deal with the TV (I think it was a joint purchase, so he’ll have to figure all that out!) but if need be, I think he can store it at my cousin’s house for the summer (she lives about 45 minutes away…doesn’t have room for all his stuff, but that one thing would probably be ok)

Does anybody know of a storage company that will pick up in May and deliver to new room in August?
I realize it’ll be pricey but son’s currently on 5th floor (and we don’t want to take stuff home anyway!)
Thanks for the help…

5th floor, I thought 4th was bad. : )
They have moving companies that do things like that but it’s usually for offices/homes, in case you need to store things before you move or find a place. I don’t know if they would do it with a college, but my husband said looking under movers vs storage might be more helpful. Storage is usually self-serve.

Has he asked about any storage on campus?

There is a student run company that provides boxes and will pickup in May and delivers in August. It is pricey but convenient. You pay by the number and size of boxes …. I think. :)

yalemom13: check post 915 from vicariousparent.

[Student Storage](http://www.thestudentstorage.com/)

I know parents who did attend, but I think in most cases, unless your kids ask, you should probably let them go on their own. I think the school schedules classes for the parents to make sure they stay out of their student’s hair! Since your child is the one who will attend, this is a good time to let them evaluate the experience without being swayed by how the two most important people in their life feel about the school.

Our student wont be able to attend Bull Dog Days due to commitments that week and weekend.
Is there anything in particular kiddo should ask for/about via the admitted student website?

Do the kids ever get a hard copy of the Blue Book, or only access through the online site?

Unless they change it this year, a hard copy of the Blue Book will be mailed over the summer. I hope they don’t exclusively change to online, because it seems fun to leaf through the book to see all of the choices.
Good luck to your child at Yale! My S is almost through his freshman year and he has loved every second of it.

yalemom13 and Debruns–gotcha beat…9th floor here  So, if the elevator is out, it is quite the hike! But pretty cool with the stone staircases, views, etc. Yes, it’s amazing how quickly this freshman year has gone for my S, but like my2sunz’s S, he has loved it. Yale is an amazing place, and it has been great for him. So, good luck to everyone who will be in the class of 2015!

Wow, Clarimom, 9th floor of Bingham? Or someplace else? QMP was on the 9th floor of Bingham freshman year.

Well, the email to 2015s asking to create their NetID, and complete their profiles for housing etc has arrived. And an email annoucing when the roommates assignments will be annoucned arrived as well.

It is feeling more real!!

There is a new option for summer storage:
[YCC Summer Storage limited | Yale Daily News](http://www.yaledailynews.com/news/2011/apr/07/ycc-summer-storage-limited/)

^^Thanks, that might be handy as D1 is graduating this spring and D2 may attend in the fall. We could store furniture, printer, bedding, etc. and have much less to deal with in May!

I’m confused about the NMF scholarships. My D had to make a 1st choice selection and the only school on the NM list that she applied to was USC so she made USC her 1st choice. She was admitted to USC and awarded a half-tuition scholarship. Obviously (ha-ha) she’s going to Yale. I thought once you selected a first choice college, you were out of running for the 2500 NM $$$. Is this not true? Did she look at an amended list of colleges participating in NM? We didn’t see Yale on the list or she would’ve chosen Yale.

Any help you can provide is much appreciated!!! We’re so excited she was admitted to Yale!!!

eifc7: Your daughter can still receive the NMF $2500 even if she goes to Yale (same happened to my daughter last year). Included with the NMF letter there was a yellow postcard that allows you to change your first choice. If you don’t have the postcard check this link.

[National Merit Scholarship Corporation - Competition Steps](http://www.nationalmerit.org/faq_competition.php#QA10)

You can mail or fax it. There is a deadline that I don’t recall when was it but I’m sure is after May31st. You also need to inform Yale of any outside scholarship your daughter will be receiving. Yale will send you a form or you can download from their website.

Congratulations!!!

Dear lillymom,

Wow! Thanks so much! I printed the form, spoke to NM Edc Svcs, called my daughter, and got the change of school form in mail today. Thank you!

I had forgotten how much help the CC forum has been to both me and my D for the past few years–at least since we started doing the college visits/research, etc. A long road, but one that yielded amazing results. We had no hooks. She had the academic goods, the stellar test scores, the in-depth extracurriculars, amazing recs, interviews–all of it, but in the end the Ivies, for the academic unhooked kids, are a crapshoot.

She got accepted EA to Georgetown and subsequently had gotten into all of her targets and safeties. The decisions for her reaches–and the final target school, came out on March 30th. We just couldn’t believe–or could (?)–she surely deserved it–her good fortune. She applied to 6 Ivies–all but Dartmouth and UPenn. The final target school was Duke. She would’ve been happy at any number of these schools, but deep down the unstated 1st choice was Yale. She got accepted to Yale (ha!), Princeton, Columbia, and Cornell. Waitlisted Harvard–and only applied to appease her dad. Rejected Brown and Duke (go figure). What a celebration we had.

Yale is generally not good to our HS. We’re in CT and our public HS is competitive, but of all the Ivies, our HS has done the least well with Yale. Not so this year!

Again, A million thanks. Given the high price tag she/we’re facing any merit money will be most welcome!!!

eifc7: I’m glad I could help you. Keep checking back the Yale parents thread. There are wonderful parents here that will help you anyway they can and loads of good tips for you and your daughter.

Congratulations again to your daughter and Welcome to Yale!!! Yale is a wonderful place with the happiest young adults I have ever met. I hope your daughter is attending Bulldog Day so she can meet them all.
