Thank you entomom and v parent!

We’ve found the financial aid office people to be fantastic. They have been a huge help when we’ve had questions and extremely nice about it.

Called FinAid office. They were helpful. When taxes are done, they go to IDOC. Corrected Profile goes to FinAid office directly. FAFSA ca be file with numbers when taxes are done so we only have to do one for them. Since paperwork got into system before Nov, we are fine. I do want to get corrected numbers to office so package can be accurate.

H and I were discussing whether or not to go up to Yale for Parents Weekend this fall. Our S will be a sophomore and we did go this past year. I hate having to pay so much for a hotel room (and having to pay in advance). We were thinking of going to visit on another weekend in Oct instead. Still get to see him, take him and friends out to dinner, etc. but at a less frenetic pace. I don’t feel like I need to do all of the school sponsored events again.
Do you go to Parents Weekend every year? Any thoughts in general on this?

We went last fall, our daughter’s sophomore year, and will probably go again the next two years. She is in a performance group that does a big show that weekend. Plus, we love to go to lots of other performances that are happening for Parent’s weekend. We stay at an inexpensive hotel about 15 minutes drive from campus, and park in a garage right next to the campus. We enjoy seeing the parents of our daughters freshman-year suitemates. The girls don’t live together any more, but the parents are still friends. We bonded over assembling Ikea bookcases that first move-in day!

I agree that any other weekend would be less hectic, though. If you didn’t want the non-stop entertainment provided Parents weekend, you could certainly have a more relaxing time another weekend.

… and as a roommate who was eternally grateful for my buddy’s parents who would take us off campus to dine… my vote is to come another weekend! LOL

Those were wonderful evenings that broke up the monotony of campus routine and an even better meal.

I’ve heard T26E4’s comments often and most of my children prefer to see us (after freshman year) on non-parent weekends, less traffic, more realistic atmosphere and getting off campus is always a treat.
If I had children performing though, I probably would go.

Thanks, guys. I’m still on the fence…my son doesn’t perform in anything
I did enjoy going to some of the performances though. And I also enjoyed meeting his friends’ parents. But there’s much to be said for going on a “regular” weekend, too. I think you get to know kid’s friends better, since you are not “competing” with their parents for their attention.

Our issue with the hotel is that we don’t take a car…it just is so much easier to take the train (it’s about a 7 hour drive from home for us) and once there I don’t want to mess with having to drive somewhere off campus to a hotel (we did do this on move-in weekend, though).

Oh well…I’ll just do what I always do…put off the decision. Then there won’t be any hotel rooms by campus and the decision will be made for me :)

^ Not necessarily. We got a room at the Study (due to a last minute cancellation) 2 days before Parent’s weekend last year. I never make non-refundable reservations too far in advance for anything- life is just too unpredictable.

Our reasons for preferring Family weekend are very similar to those of 50isthenew40. D and her friends are in various groups that have big performances that weekend.

On a related note, a new calendar goes into effect starting 2012-13, creating an extra fall break in October. That might cut down on the popularity of Family weekend.

my2sunz - I looked up the La Quinta Hotel (near Ikea) because I remembered someone on this forum mentioning it. They have a free shuttle into New Haven, are pretty cheap, and as far as I can tell refundable if you cancel by the day of. Good luck!

Thanks vicarious and Yalemom! Both good thoughts. I’ll check the La Quinta. I agree about making non-refundable room reservations. You never know what might come up between now and then!

I just saw a general thread about this on the Parents Board and it made me think that I should post a similar one on the Yale thread to get info specific to Yale.
My S is a freshman; we drove him up to Yale (about 7 hour drive) and way back when thought we’d reverse the process in May. But it really is a pain and seems kind of silly to drag all his stuff home and then haul it all back in August. So, experienced Yale Parents: Has your child stored his stuff either at Yale or somewhere in New Haven? Any specifics? S is currently living in Farnam and will be in JE in the fall, if that matters.
Thanks for any advice!

There are many storage facilities in New Haven and nearby towns, just google storage facilities in New Haven. I saw at link on Yale’s site to storage they have but it’s not insured. I’m sure many students, especially older students have ideas also. The best advice though is to do it early. My friend had a son at another school, but still a 7 hour drive and she ended up getting a place a mile away, only because someone pulled out because she waited too long. She still went up to get him, but just driving a mile to the storage facility was great compared to dragging and storing it all home again.

Hey Yale veterans!

I didn’t notice this thread till now, but I think you guys could probably answer a lot of my questions about next year (I’m a SCEA admit).

So the biggest trouble in our household lately has been sorting out the iDOC/CSS Profile Corrections mess. We recently discovered that we can’t officially file our taxes until November, because my dad’s an expat and much of our income falls under a foreign income exclusion clause that won’t be decided until the fall. That being said, we don’t really know what to send Yale. We have the domestic portion of the 2010 tax return completed, but it’s ultimately still a draft…
Does anyone have experience with this/any good advice?
How late can we send the tax information?

Also, on a more personal financial note, is there a cap at which Yale stops giving out FA? My parents were shocked to see our FAFSA EFC, which, at 65k, is pretty ridiculous. Does that imply that we’ll be paying the full sticker price next year, or is Yale more generous?

Also, a more random question:
For Bulldog Days, I’m planning to fly into the Hartford airport and then take the shuttle to Yale. Do I need to book that shuttle in advance or let them know I’ll be coming? I figure that there’ll be a ton of us so that’s unnecessary, but my mom thinks differently, haha.

Thanks bunches!

Vaeliant, congratulations on your SCEA admission and congratulations on finding this thread! Sorry I can’t help you with financial aid stuff. But be wary about flying in to Hartford. Last time I checked the Go Airport and CT Limo shuttles had suspended service to Bradley.

About the summer storage, does anyone have experience with this company (see link below) that comes and picks up stuff from the dorm, stores it over the summer and the delivers the stuff to the new dorm in the fall? We live too far away to drive.

[Student Storage](http://www.thestudentstorage.com/)

vicariousparent, where did you get the news that CT Limo had suspended service to Bradley? My S used it from Bradley just two weeks ago, and was planning to again for spring break. Their website still lists Phelps Gate as a stop from Bradley.

Regarding summer storage, there is storage in the various residential colleges. Each has different regulations regarding number of boxes, size of boxes, etc. There is also furniture storage in rooms–so be sure to check on all this before you go renting storage space somewhere.

^^In some of the colleges, there is virtually no room for storage. My son and his roommates had to store everything, or virtually everything, I believe.

Thanks for the storage info…I’ll have S check on residential college storage, but think it might make sense for him and his roommate to go in together on an off-site storage unit. I saw this one: [New Haven Connecticut Self Storage, Hamden Connecticut Self Storage | Dixwell Self Storage](http://www.newhavenctstorage.com/). Is anyone familiar with it?

I liked the Student Storage idea that vicariousparent posted about, but it seemed like it could end up being kind of pricey (when I started thinking about that he’d be storing more than clothing: rug, flat screen tv, assorted other “stuff”!) But still interested to hear what others think of it…

Clarimom, my information is older, and obviously incorrect. It is possible that I was given the wrong information or I had misunderstood the info provided by the folks at CT limo when I had called last fall. I apologize for the confusion. My D usually takes the GoAirport shuttle to JFK.

My son used New Haven Self-Storage last year, and it worked out fine.
