Yale Parents thread

Kdog - Yeah, there was some humor, but certain bits - such as “Good news for you, you uncomfortable and misguided little prick!” - left a sour taste that was hard to wash away.

fogfog - Thanks for that information, which does not come as a shock. ;-)

MarathonDad,

I think you took it a little too literal. Obviously our kids were smart enough to get into Yale so they are smart enough to get the humor and not view it as a personal attack.

Sit back and let them enjoy the ride as it’s going to be a great four years for them.

Evryone is pretty excited and chill here.
Well good news is Move In is just over a week away…and looks like we have bought what we can to pack/fly and the rest we will buy locally.
Hoping we don’t have too many “forgotten items” to contend with as some 1200+ frosh and their families load in how many tons of stuff?
I wonder if Y housing ever tires to estimate the # of refrigerators, couches, and #s of stuff the students haul in that first day. I still remember my own move-in many moons ago–best described as controlled/polite chaos! haha
Looking forward to meeting other parents on Old Campus, at the reception and so on…

Kdog - never viewed it as a personal attack, just as an immature attempt at humor that was reprehensibly non-funny (especially, but not solely, in a publication sent to parents). The gutter level of the writers’ attempted wittiness put Yale in a bad light, IMHO. And that’s pretty much all I hope I need to say about that.

Still, I’m confident my son will, as you say, “enjoy the ride” - hard to believe it starts in just 10 days!

Even sooner for some of them, including my son. He heads to New Haven Monday for the 4-day FOOT trip. I’m a bit jealous. :)

I see them slowly coming in now, students with back packs and suitcases, but nothing like the day they all come…that day is on the news so drivers will try to avoid the area. : )

Thankfully all upperclassman can move in earlier…

I guess traffic patterns on campu remain the same? Does anyone know if thy open the gates of the U drive in front of Vanderbilt for drop off?

I have the macro view of move-in day, but I don’t recall ever seeing specifics. Did I miss this among the many publications?

When we arrive on campus, do we first park the car and walk somewhere to pick up the key and check in? (Are there receommened lots with much parking?) Do freshmen who are in Silliman have a different procedure for picking up keys than do most of the other freshmen?

Do we then pull the car into a queue to wait to drop our goods off in front of the appropriate entryway?

What if our student is off on a pre-orientation trip? The campers may get back as late as noon, which makes things really tight, as there is a mid-afternoon talk followed by the master’s meeting at 4. Will parents be able to get the key on behalf of the student and move items into the room well before noon?

Check-in information: [First-Day Checklist | Yale College](http://yalecollege.yale.edu/content/first-day-checklist)

“Students living on the Old Campus may obtain keys and identification cards outside Dwight Hall until 5 p.m. Students living in Timothy Dwight or Silliman colleges may obtain keys and identification cards at the master’s offices of those colleges.”

What if our student is off on a pre-orientation trip? [FOOT - Frequently Asked Questions](http://www.yale.edu/foot/faq.html#return)

“We suggest parents arrive an hour or two before noon. Parents can pick up their student’s room keys as early as 9 am and can help unload their student’s furniture, boxes, and other belongings. Also, be aware that move-in day is the worst traffic day of the year in New Haven!”

Does anyone know if live TV is streamed into the dorms on old campus? If so does my son need an ethernet cable to access it on his computer? Older son at different college has this so I’m just checking. I’m sure I could google it, but I thought I’d try here first.

If your kid is on a FOOT trip, you will probably unload all his stuff and he will stroll in casually later. But there will be volunteers from the residential college there to help you, so it’s not really much of a burden.

So are all of the rooms open?
Meaning the student can head to Dwight Hall for keys and ID while the car gets unloaded?
I guess the kids should be in line for their keys and ID early

Also-- we were looking for 1HTBA (a room/building for chem) and cannot find it in the building coades list. What are we missing?

I think 1HTBA means the course is one hour, location To Be Announced.

The rooms might be open if some of the other roomies are there. It doesn’t take very long to get the key, and the unloaders will probably just take stuff up to the right landing. Also, the unloaders will tell you what to do, so you don’t really need to worry about the logistics all that much once you pull the car up to the right side of the Old Campus.

1HTBA refers to an additional discussion session that the students will sign up for once the first class begins.

We could have said it was the Harry Truman Biology Annex. See how nice we are?

Got it

Last year for move-in day, we showed up with zero prior research or planning and it all went really smoothly. Getting the key took maybe a minute or two, getting an SUV full of stuff up 5 flights of stairs took maybe 5-10 minutes (thanks to a dozen or so upperclassmen and women). Lots of people were around to tell us and our kid what to do next. It was a bit like pulling up at the Ritz Carlton with the exception that they didn’t have valet parking available.

^^^ haha vicarious parent. Good to hear.

Question on scheduling— If a course is listed both a WR and a Hu for example–does it count both ways or for only a skill or a discipline?

Hunt, so thankful we have great Y parents here…

We had been trying to figure out locations from the online course stuff and it was huge auditorium… ;)

You can only take the credit in one discipline or skill, not both. Unless your son likes to write I would suggest using the writing credit as there are more interesting courses in the other areas you can take to satisfy those distribution requirements. That being said, you can satisfy a requirement in a major and take the skill credit. For example, my son is taking MCDB 122 in the spring which is a requirement for his major but plans on taking the writing credit for the class. He still gets to satisfy his major pre-req even though he isn’t taking the science credit.

Anyone have an opinion on dorm insurance.
The Yale housing website lists one company and I have read about 2 others here on CC.
Frankly the company linked to Yale’s own policy is more expensive and has a higher deductible for laptops/cellphones than the other two firms.

Thoughts? Does anyone here have first hand knowledge/experience with these firms?
