I think we bought the one for $75 to insure the computer. We also had a computer lock and cable. He felt so safe in the room that he never used the lock and we never used the insurance. He never heard anyone having stuff stolen. (not that it didn’t happen). For his second year - No Insurance. Just a side note. Freshman move-in was great. And my son loves it there. We just dropped him off as he is working for the Master before the other students arrive.

We bought the dorm insurance last year through CSI (I’m not sure if that’s the one that was recommended by Yale or not) and did it again for the upcoming school year. I believe it was right around $100 for $4000 worth of coverage with a $25 deductible. We fortunately did not have to use it, but I feel better about having it not only for theft or loss, but if his laptop gets damaged. Also, S is bringing his good bike with him this year and I think we would both feel better if that was covered.
I will echo the others about freshman move-in. It was very smooth and easy, even if you didn’t know ahead of time exactly where to park, etc (we didn’t, btw.)
Good luck to all of the new students and their parents!

Is a 3.1 cf compact fridge like the following too large for dorm room? (if placed in the common room.)

Any suggestion on the brand of this kind of mini/compact fridge? I used to own one mini fridge which does not have a compressor (it uses some newer solid state technology.) It turns out it is very noisy. I do not like it.

Is there a rule about how large a fridge the student can use in the dorm? I remember the suite DS was in rented two mini fridges (for 6 suite mates) from some Yale-affiliated company/association, but I could not remember their size.

Yale/B&N is selling small appliances, including fridges: [Small Appliances - The Yale Bookstore](http://yale.bncollege.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/SubcategoryView?catalogId=10001&storeId=16556&categoryId=40095&parentCatId=40027&topCatId=40002&langId=-1)

Didn’t see anything about fridge size here…

Maybe in the stuff the froco sent??

It doesn’t say size but most refrigerators are fine.

My daughters weren’t larger than 4.5 cubic feet

Beware at move-in of using your cellphone while driving. In the chaos of turning from Elm street to College street my cellphone rang and I picked it up. It didn’t take 10 seconds and I told the caller trying to reach me from the office that I had to call them back. I narrowly talked my way out of a ticket. Move-in was a breeze. Make sure to bring some basic tools to put stuff together - especially if you will be making an Ikea run.

Also because there are a lot of out of state drivers and people not familiar with the one-way streets and heavy traffic.
I sometimes had to swerve away from double-parked cars that suddenly would dart out.
You can never be too careful.

Whereas the in-state drivers are impeccable!

Of course…: ) I just meant we know the streets, every year I see one or two going the wrong way down a street around campus and I know my husband used to see more when he worked down there.

I would be scary in Boston…

Good pts re cell phone and one way traffic.

Cell phone use isn’t against the law in our state.

As for one way streets–I was wondering about that and all of the parking issues…

Hoping we are remain very “zen” and that it rolls smoothly ;)

It might have helped if the campus map that Yale put in the “Calendar for Opening Days of Collage” identified the one way streets with arrows. ;)

P.S. I believe the map in this document identifies the one-way streets but I’m a Midwesterner so perhaps someone else can confirm.

Wait, New Haven has one-way streets? That’s odd, it didn’t when I was driving there. :)

We pulled out of the York street garage after dropping off our daughter for FOOT on Saturday and it was only my shriek that kept my husband from turning right on this one way street!

Arrives in New Haven today; while having lunch by La Quinta we experienced the earthquake! Building shook, chandeliers swayed, quite the experience! Epicenter in Virginia 5.9 magnitude

Any news from Yale…re erthquake etc…
Is all well?

It wasn’t felt everywhere, my home in New Haven was quiet, daughter said, other parts near the green felt it. (just a slight tremor I heard)

Another thing around Yale is construction, so some streets that are 2 way are 1 way for a while…but most are clearly marked.
Around old campus, at Phelps Gate it’s 2 way, but when you turn onto Chapel, if you turn right, it’s one way. Again, everything is marked, you just have to be careful as you would in any town you aren’t familiar with but there is just a bit more congestion…but more security too, in case you have questions. Police on foot, bike, cars.
I found it easy last year, but be prepared to walk…I was shocked at some women in heels last year. : )

KDog044, that does show 1 arrow for one way streets.

Fogfog, some buildings evacuated in New Haven, including La Quinta. S received emergency alert email from Yale. Definitely felt here by waterfront. But no damage at Yale.

Only 10% chance of precipitation on Friday, woo hoo!!! I was not looking forward to a soggy move-in day. Looks like the effects of Irene don’t come until Sunday. My guess is the kids won’t even notice with all the other excitement :)

Thanks Clarimom.
