Remind your freshman to take an umbrella for Saturday’s Freshman assembly. They will gather in front of their college residence at old campus and from there walk to Woolsey Hall (1-2 blocks) and afterwards they will go to the reception at the president’s house another 2 long blocks.

lilymom- what is the recommended dress code for the students on Saturday?

The students do dress up for this assembly and the reception at the President’s house. Sports jackets for the young men are common. “Two blocks” from Woolsey up Hillhouse to Levin’s home is an understatement.

^quite the trek, eh? Maybe we should hope for rain in which case it will be in Beinecke… :p

Last year, most young men wore suits with tie, a few with sport jackets and no tie. Many young ladies wore sundresses and low sandals, a few in business attire, a few in cocktail dresses and high heel, and I saw only one in dress pants.

What about dress code for parents? My wife and I are trying to figure out what to wear.

Exactly my question two years ago (on this thread):

The response:

The Assembly is really the only place where “dress-up” level noticeably increases, but you might want to up it a notch above casual for the residential college reception given by the Master, too.

How necessary do you all think the blazer is nowadays? Would a pair of khakis and a nice shirt pass muster at the Assembly and the Master’s reception? Or would that attire mark me as a hopeless rube?

From what I saw last year, I think that attire would be fine for both. Saw blazers, but lots of guys without, too.
Good luck!

If you’re an Old Blue, don’t forget to have a white handkerchief at the assembly.

I can still see the expression on DH’s face at that part of the assembly…very special moment for him, seeing his child going where he has such happy memories. It made me want a “do-over” so I could go back in time and go to a place like Yale :)

FWIW, I was one of very few blazer-clad dads at the freshman assembly this morning (and it was so warm that almost nobody kept a jacket on during the proceedings). Dress shirt & slacks was the most popular attire, with polo shirt & khakis not far behind.

Hope the hurricane has largely expended itself before it hits campus.

Riding the storm out in New Haven after having flight out of JFK canceled (JFK seemed like such a good idea back when we made our reservations…!). So impressed with Yale’s emergency preparedness. Son has a fridge full of water, sandwiches, cereal, tons of food. kids are being restricted to their suites until at least the end of tomorrow afternoon, possibly longer…(great way to get to know your new suite mates ). At this morning’s freshman assembly they said Yale generates their own power and most of the power lines are below ground. they seem to have a great handle on things. quite the dramatic start to the Class of 2015’s Yale experience!

Yes, I feel the same way. I joked with DD that it took me 3 1/2 years in New Haven to have a major weather event, and a typical overachiever, she has one in 2 days

Let them … and us … stay safe!

HI All

We hear you! We felt the same way.

Move in was smooth. roommate and parents seem absolutely lovely.
Convocation was very moving and I feel blessed to know that our student is at such an amazing place with such tremendous opportunities, people, resources.

Watching kiddo walk through courtyard and arches heading into the new things to come was a gratifying moment…
The emotion of the transition hit us when we pulled into the driveway at home…

I started working with airline–calling every 8 hours to get flts out back on the day of our arrival (thursday)…as we knew that if we stayed til Sunday am–we’d be stuck for awhile…
We flew out of the last flight out of Hartford Saturday — had and aircraft problem with our connecting flight at the arilones hub–Did reach home about 6 hrs ago (around 2 am) without luggage…Eventful exhausting travel, yet safe.

In awe of the Class of 2015…

Another member of this freshman class (not my kid) finished second in the U.S. Chess Championship two years ago - the first person so young to finish that high since Bobby Fischer in the late '50s.

Went on tour with DH and kiddo2 - who hadn’t been on a tour–and was surprised at the number of tourists and prosctive students…especially that weekend!
The tour guide Sat afternoon told the parents and prospectives he pays $10k…per yr…
The finaid thing is so complicated and it does give the wrong impression…imho…because Y has changed finaid policy several times in the last few years…

Among the outstanding members of this year’s freshman class are a playwright whose Off-Broadway play is currently in production: [?Summer Shorts 5? With Ruby Rae Spiegel - Review - NYTimes.com](‘Summer Shorts 5’ With Ruby Rae Spiegel - Review - The New York Times)

Stop already, you are making me think my incoming freshman is not worthy (grin).:o

Kdog044…

as they said at the convocations…1352 of the most interesting and talented individuals in the class of 2015 and your student and mine are part of that!! whoo hoo
:D

So many amazing resources and opportunities await them all.
