Yale Parents thread

fogfog,

Yeah, and I’m jealous of the opportunities. Ah, to be 18 again. ;). I do expect great things from this class as I met some bright and engaging young men and women this past weekend. The only event I was disappointed in was the President’s reception. I felt like a head of cattle being herded to the slaughter. Thanks for coming, now here is the door.

We figured (last year) that event would be mobbed- no way so many people could possibly fit into such a small space. I guess we should alert parents of future years- don’t bother with the President’s reception.

The reception with the Master in the Residential College was very nice last year. Were those events canceled this year due to the hurricane?

Events seemed to run smoothly–
Convocation at Woosley, pres recep at Beinecke as expected due to weather.
Master’s open house receptions were on Fri afternoon–and it was still sunny–lots of lovely food and beverages–we had a water/tea and then after talking with the roommates folks, headed out. Our student had another comiment on campus.
The time for the lunch at the res dining rooms I think was changed as it started at 1-- somehow I think the earlier schedules had that starting earlier, idk
We skipped the Pres recep expecting it to be crowded…and our student wanted to go back to the dorm to change before lunch.
The suggested leaving time of 2-4 pm–frankly gets reinforced because the kids had mandatory security mtgs…So we left by 1:40 as our student headed off to SSS for that meeting…we were on the last flt out of Hartford before the airport shut down completely.
Some Sat night and all of Sunday’s events for the kids were cancelled or rearranged. They moved the placement tests for languages to Saturday afternoon etc…so for some families this would interfere with lunch together/goodbyes.
Irene did seem to impact the launching—

I did meet a family that had planned to hang around a few days to see if their dd needed them as is their m.o. - evidently they alway stay 2 days over to see what she needs…
OTOH I know of a family who missed the Convocation because they had an early am flight to get out before the storm shut down the airport–they had 3 leg plane flight and needed to go whle they could.

The Master’s reception on Friday was very nice (at least at Morse). My son chose to wait on the language placement and took the makeup yesterday so we could spend some time with him on Saturday. We did manage to get him over to the post office to get his keys and still squeeze in lunch in the dining hall before heading out around 2:00 PM.

Since we were driving we didn’t need to worry about airport delays or cancellations but did hit some storms heading back. I did hear the student activity bazaar was rescheduled for 9/4 (I believe) and the peer liaison desserts were cancelled but the restriction to the residential hall on Sunday allowed them to bound with their suite mates so all was well. Even if they didn’t have activities and meetings for the students I think my son was ready for us to leave and eager to start socializing.

^ agree kdog

…our student was ready for us to go…has been really busy, with academic advisement stuff, fro-co stuff, sports stuff, dorm friends stuff…

Pretty exciting.

My son hasn’t mentioned any problems with the dining halls. He told me he is sampling each one so I don’t think he has eaten in the same one twice yet.

My daughter says she very much prefers the new expanded hours at the dining halls in residential colleges. She never ate dinner at Commons so the trade-off worked out great for her. It has been nice to move to the residential college for sophomore year.

Spoke with kiddo last night to hear how the week or so has gone. Loving classes for the most part–plenty of work to do…the one large lecture hall/physics is boring and kiddo is hoping with future material it improves.

Looks forward to meals, plenty to eat and quality continues to be great.

Team is terrific, workouts and time is a heavy commitment (knew going in) - continues to enjoy it.

Making lots of friends though knows fewer in entryway because of team commitment and not having tons of free time to just hang out in dorm

When do most students return after break - I see the dorms open days before the freshmen have to be back to meet with FroCo. Any ideas? We need to reserve flight.

If you mean christmas break, my son returned as soon as the dorms were open. If you are taking about Thanksgiving, most like to come back for the weekend.

after christmas… thanks!

Just did flight for Christmas break. Note that all campus dining is closed even if dorms are open.

Supposedly Silliman and Ezra Stiles/Morse reopen for brunch and dinner on Thursday (01/05), the day after the dorms reopen (01/04). The rest of the college dining halls reopen on Sunday for brunch (01/08).

Kdog044 - that’s really great news. It does look like at least Stiles and Morse will open early. It’s unclear what’s going on with Silliman. The dining site contradicts itself:

Yalemom2, I saw that but it would make sense they open early, all of the colleges open for brunch on 01/08 so why have anything in there about those two unless it was different. My son is at Morse so I will ask him to find out for sure.

Yes I found that perplexing–the upper calendar states everything is closed…then the other items sound like some things are open.

We and our student got surprised by the dining halls not being open fully open the first days—I think everything wasn’t open til classes were in session…we never even thought to look for that

I just booked the holiday flights

Up next:
Trolley party.

Our “kids” have so much fun!

Options for Getting from Old Campus to Hartford Airport

I know it has probably been posted before. But needed to find out the options for freshman S to get from Old Campus to the Hartford Airport and back for Thanksgiving, and again at Christmas.
Names and contact info for companies ?
Do you have to make reservations ahead ?
Where do they pick up ?
What’s the cost ?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
